Watch as nobody reads this.
I agree that there aren't a lot of them
The problem is, they all do the same fucking thing. There's little to no deviation in the gameplay, weapon selection, visual style, even graphical quality. I think a modern military shooter could be done well, it would just have to differentiate itself.
For example

How many of these brand new E3 games are military shooters like Battlefield? All I can really count is CoD and Battlefield.
Not a surprise that Sci-Fi is going to become the shit once next-gen comes out.
I expect a lot of developers want to go crazy with the new hardware seeing as they can do a lot of things that they can't with the last-gen.
While it's true modern military shooters are not as common right now. Many tropes from those games are in fucking everything: Grim-dark, brown n bloom, B-B-B-B-BLOODY SCREEN SO REAL health mechanics, chest high walls, realism, slower paced gameplay, emphasis on "cinematic" single player when not focused on multiplayer, iron-sight aiming, and that god damn red dot sight that's been everywhere.
That's where the stagnation lies.
Now that I think about it a lot of future/near future games were shown off at E3 that had shooter elements but weren't modern military shooters in the vein of Battlefield or CoD. Did the modern shooter bubble burst finally?

we can only hope. Destiny looks pretty spiffy

Literally the only game on PS2 of this E3.
Literally the only game on PS2 of this E3.
they still make PS2 games?

Brazil. In Brazil a PS3 costs 550$ right now. Which means many can't afford it and therefore still have their PS2.
Brazil loves Fifa -> EA releases fifa for 200 million brazillians

Work backwards from here. A surprising amount of games.

countries where the ps2 is still the dominant platform? for example, the console was only officially launched in brazil in 2009. And it was only in january that sony officially started discontinuing the ps2.
what i think deserves more of a question is, what technical improvements can they keep making on so old a system?

Battlefield is pretty unique in that manner.
I hope after the next gen Sci-Fi craze they go back to WW2...
Battlefield Vietnam was pretty fucking cool too, wouldn't mind more things like that

From what I remember when the first visuals of BF3 were released, everyone blew their load. If I watch the Frostbite 2 tech demo again on Youtube, I remember how amazingly impressive it all was. Even though BF4 isn't as big of a step up, it's still the most visually impressive shooter around. The multiplayer is probably the best on the market.
However the singleplayer really brings it down. A large chunk of the budget is wasted on making a poor straightforward experience look very pretty.
And the abandoning of mod support still feels like a loss. The first few titles in the series had great mods.
but there's a huge amount out there
I mean sure, there's only two being released this year - but most people don't stop playing games just because they were released a year ago
In the last 5-10 years think how many were released, of course its an oversaturated market with no innovation
I hope after the next gen Sci-Fi craze they go back to WW2...
there's not a lot of potential for WW2
everybody knows what happened
there weren't a lot of weapons that were used and most of them were more or less the same
and it's already been done to death in the past decade
I wanna see a Blade Runner/Max Payne detective puzzle shooty thing

Where are the OUYA games?
Yeah, we can do without any more modern military shooters for now.
they still make PS2 games?
EA makes the last game for nearly every console since the PS1.
FIFA 2005 was the last PS1 game
Madden 09 was the last Xbox game.
Madden 08 for Gamecube
Edit: Corrected.
EA always makes the last game for a console since the PS1.
Although its kind of cheating since the dreamcast is just a home NAOMI and the naomi is still a thing
it's still the most visually impressive shooter around.
Not really. Heaps of games look better.
ArmA II/III.
Halo 3.
Hell, even Bad Company 2 looks better because of how colourful it is.
Battlefield Vietnam was pretty fucking cool too, wouldn't mind more things like that
Those games haven't aged too well
Those games haven't aged too well
How has ArmA III not aged well when it's not even released yet?
Actually, now that the lighting and shading hardware is more advanced, I think we're going to see a move away from a lot of the stereotypical "grimdark" features too.
Every time a console comes out, there's always that moment where the new console is growing in their adult teeth and shitting out their baby teeth. Within two years, I think we're really going to see a shift in how video games are setup. I think "The Division" and "Watch_Dogs's" style might take precedent - open-worlds mixed with highly detailed atmospheres.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if DICE jumped onto 2143 after Battlefront. I mean, if Battlefront proves widely popular, it's only natural that they'd want to continue the sci-fi focus.
Not to mention, sci-fi seems to be a big potential genre.
