But I suppose 2.5 billion dollars is a nice bonus.
Sounds like he's trying to put the genie back into the bottle. In regards to how his success affected his own person/how people treat him anyway.
But I suppose 2.5 billion dollars is a nice bonus.
I suppose not having to put up with a lot of shit is a nice bonus.
A lot of indie devs gets shit purely for existing. I can't imagine how Notch must have felt the past years, with the success of Minecraft changing his life completely, his father's death and his divorce,, and constantly being criticized for not making the next video game wonder
makes sense what sane man would refuse 2.5B?
Yea... sure...

I can't imagine how Notch must have felt the past years, with the success of Minecraft changing his life completely, his father's death and his divorce,, and constantly being criticized for not making the next video game wonder
This is what he commented on the video linked in the article that talks about "internet fame": which IMO fits perfectly together with this quote (especially the last sentence)
I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a CEO. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.
It's scary when people with even just mild internet fame talk about they suddenly notice how differently they're treated. Something as simple as retweeting something stupid without thinking twice can unleash a wave of rabid fanboys, or as in Phil Fish's case you make the big news every time you don't fuck up and feed people's sensational picture of you. What's the way out of that for someone that's a self-proclaimed nerd and would like to keep using the internet as freely as everyone else?
makes sense what sane man would refuse 2.5B?
He's the one who went forward to microsoft, not the other way around.
He's the one who went forward to microsoft, not the other way around.
A while after MS approached him with an offer.
Notch is this generation's George Lucas
Notch is this generation's George Lucas
George Lucas didn't sell Star Wars so people could hopefully shut up about him and he could continue making small stupid personal projects, which seems much more likely to be the case here.
Notch is this generation's George Lucas
Goerge Lucas made some films which a bunch of people liked and then continued to edit and change the story/previous movies in ways that the fans didn't like, for which he received criticsm. Notch made a sort-of game which a bunch of people liked, and was then met with an overwhelming amount of attention, demands, personal criticsm and drama until he wanted nothing more then to return to the days of being a not-well known indie developer, making small games for fun. I'd say Notch's story is a little bit more tragic then ol' Lucas.

I hope he can find anonymity at some point, so he can work on small little projects without everyone immediately expecting the next Minecraft from him. Living with that kind of pressure on top of all the hate he gets can't be easy.
Now he has to take a vacation to restore his sanity.
Yea... sure...
What about this is hard to believe?
To be fair he already had more money than he'd be able to spend, this doesn't seem like a greed move at all.
Time to uninstall minecraft. [sp]it's a joke[/sp]
A lot of indie devs gets shit purely for existing. I can't imagine how Notch must have felt the past years, with the success of Minecraft changing his life completely, his father's death and his divorce,, and constantly being criticized for not making the next video game wonder
Same stuff happens to musicians all the time, biased opinions about which album was better, what live performance been better, then people criticize how this band isn't going to be good again or how their old sound sounded better. Minecraft was the game that simply struck the gold vein and it spread around audiences, mostly with kids and teenagers who still have untapped creativity potentials and look to do something about it.
Minecraft was the game that simply struck the gold vein
more like diamond vein heh get it [sp]Anyway, I'd be less annoyed if the modding API was out and installing mods wasn't this super complicated annoying thing you don't want to deal with. With Microsoft, there's no fucking way it's happening.[/sp]
It's unfathomably stupid that he got shit for banning micro-transactions on server because of how exploitative they were.
It's unfathomably stupid that he got shit for banning micro-transactions on server because of how exploitative they were.
Every community has people who don't totally understand things. In the case of Minecraft, people gave shit because they didn't realize that was meant to stop servers that, say, limit you to Stone equipment unless you pay real money for "premium"/better tools. To be on topic, I'm in the middle on this. Been said numerous times already, but Microsoft could do great things for Minecraft as well as terrible things. All we can really do is wait.
Anyway, I'd be less annoyed if the modding API was out and installing mods wasn't this super complicated annoying thing you don't want to deal with.
how is dragging and dropping mod files into the .jar hard?
Good on him. I wish him well, and for him a peaceful early retirement. He's had it incredibly rough. If I'm not mistaken, he suffers from depression, his wife left him, and his father killed himself. Getting the hate from half of the internet's self entitled shits because of a fucking 20€ video game would be too much for anyone.
Except Notch was always a slob. Even during alpha, when Minecraft was unknow.
This is exactly the shit I'm talking about. Who the hell cares?
That's got to be freeing for him, honestly. If you've paid attention to him over the past couple years, it's easy to see that he's over all the Minecraft fame, and all the crap that comes with it. Now he can just go off and do his own thing, never having to worry about fame or popularity or money again. I don't doubt he's enjoying that. Can't say I blame him for it, honestly. I'd say he deserves a break.
Good for him.
"It's not about the money" but i'm sure the extra 500 mil added on to the initial price we saw didn't hurt. In all seriousness though, good for him. I'm glad he's trying to move on and not be eternally tied to this.
