Try run it on a dual core laptop with an nvidia 8600. It can run HL2 on max, but minecraft runs terribly.
My acer aspire one d255 runs hl2 better than minecraft. Bigger map size will be dlc watch it happen.

Well its an insanely popular game and I bet the port didn't cost much to make. Not kidding when I say every 12 year old I know plays this game.
My PC can play BF3 on ultra, and well, MC has fps issues
I played the trial. It runs pretty well, but you can see why. The texture filtering is atrocious, amongst other things. The world cuts off and it's visible around most of the map. The nether has a huge OP brick wall barrier.
I actually enjoy it more on my console than on the pc. It feels better somehow, also playing with my brother all the time is a HUGE fun boost, split screen options horizontally and vertically are avaible also. Great game for the console.
I tried the demo yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised, the game runs really smooth and plays quite nicely. I had some great fun, it is quite relaxing. It is ridiculous that the version is far more optimized than the version on the pc. I usually play on pc and I never get that kind of smooth framerate. Although it lacks the newest updates in terms of experience, food, enchantements and such.
This doesn't surprise me considering that, no joke, the top 5 selling "xbox indie games" from the indie-gaming channel (aka the poor-man's indie games on Xbox that never cost more than $4 and have no restrictions on what you can see there) were all minecraft clones

Why not add a goal to Minecraft if you're not going to give the player unlimited map sizes? I mean, you could just add some really cool stuff to dungeon chests (double jump boots? explode-o-pickaxe?), but fuck it. Just port it and make it not as great.
I wish they'd optimize the PC version like this... And adding the option to render maps in a limited size of choice would be nice too.
It's probably smoother because the of the lack of Java.
I really wish people would stop blaming java for this. It's mostly internal code that causes the performance issues. Also the fact with maps that load as you walk you are spending half of your frame time actually decompressing the chunk and then drawing it. It's not java's fault.
