Why would a company revert a series to provide fan service if not at a profit
Because they care about their fans! Oh who am I kidding, they don't give two fucks.
I highly doubt that a classic resident evil would sell anywhere near 5 million copies. The last new title in the series (sans the outbreak titles) was zero in 2002, which sold 1.3 million. Resident evil 4 sold 7.6 million, and resident evil 5 sold 7.9 million. The only titles pre 4 to sell over 5 million were 1 and 2, back in 1996 and 1998. Clearly these new titles are of more interest than the old formulas, despite what you "real fans" might say.
I think it's important to analyze the landscape of console gaming back then as well. The market has expanded significantly with this generation, and I think it's perfectly possible for a scary, old-school RE game to sell well into the multiple millions of copies. The brand is stagnating, and the games themselves are competing against tougher competition. The solution is to penetrate a market that exists but is underrepresented. The survival-horror genre is still hungry for games. Dead Space was hugely successful without being a pure action game. If the RE series brought back some of its core aspects and maintained the fluid controls and visuals, then the games have a huge potential. The game would sell on novelty alone (of course that's not the only reason). [editline]10th February 2013[/editline] Capcom is competing against better action shooters, but the survival-horror market is completely open. The potential for an absurd amount of sales is there.
Go back to your old design traits of the ps2 era then we would love you again. Sadly, I think capcom is comprised with a lot of new developers and a lot of the more awesome ones have left their in-house studios.

The camera angles, tank controls, limited saves, and others were big criticisms that i recall from reviewers of the time. but there's certainly directions where they could go, i see revelations as a good step, though more tension would be great. survival horror has been stagnant as a genre overall. i enjoyed the silent hill wii title (though not really a horror but more of a thriller), but the rest of the series since 4 has been pretty bland. a more classic title could be the hit they need to revive the genre.
Yeah, I mean obviously the title needs to have modern amenities. They can't simply port the old RE into a flashy new HD packaging and call it a day. Specifically, I think the fixed camera needs to be dropped if a modernization occurs. Sure, it lets you direct the game more specifically and lends itself well when trying to scare people, but it's archaic and won't work as well for the mass-market. What I think can bring the series back though is the scope of the game. Tone it down, instead of an epic continent spanning adventure, bring it back to the original games. A downtown area of a small city or maybe a mansion and the surrounding properties. Make the experience personal. The tight third person camera might lend itself well in a cramped, poorly lit mansion. Plus give it the scary elements back. Limited weapons and ammo, more an emphasis on atmosphere rather than story, and an element of mystery will all help greatly with some sort of remake. The game doesn't need to be old RE, but rather needs to ground itself in some of the elements that made the game great. That's what the fans want, and it's what will differentiate it from the limitless shooters out on the market. Right now, RE is just modern shooter number X with zombies as the bad guy instead of an army.
I really don't get Capcom. They seem to do the exact opposite of what their fans want most of the time.
I really don't get Capcom. He was basically just continuing with the trend that seemed to be doing well. 5 was more action oriented than 4, and it sold better. So why not take another step in that direction?
Some elements of the general gameplay were alright and pretty nice in RE6, some of it was nice, but man...The storyline was banana's and had hilariously bad writing and design. Leon's boss fight(s) with Simmons that pretty much dominated the entire final 3rd of his campaign and it's joke of an ending.
I understand why they made their decisions but it's usually not what the fans of the series want. I doubt many people would be interested in the gameplay of 1-3 that aren't fans of them, talking from a mass audience point of view here obviously. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed 5 and 6 but they weren't fantastic. I think 4 nailed the balance of what a modern resident evil should be. I know that I would be really excited for another resident evil in the same vein as 4. In 5 and 6 you're too strong and you never feel threatened by the enemies and there's no oh shit moments at all. 4 kept some of the vulnerability aspects of the originals imo but still managed to make it more appealing with the new play style.
If they want something with good sales, how about releasing an EU/NA version of MH Frontier? I didn't care for Tri, as they removed too many of the iconic monsters, (and can't use the Wiis controls, even with classic controller) but Frontier is basically MH1, 2 and Unite all together.

I think I got it firstly because it wasn't as scary as the ones before (I was a huge pussy, yep) and it wasnt as hard when shitting myself from a bunch of zombies coming at me. It just looked more appealing with the gameplay(which now seems too easy) being easier and the enemies not being slow enduring and non-flinching scary as fuck targets in an awfully tight environment. The game lacked a bit in the horror department. Although... I sort of fixed that once when I was playing in a dark room... Fixed it a bit too well for confort... The RE games after that (excluding revelaitons apparently) were all a failure though. RE 5 was so boring that I didn't even finish it. It's like they looked at what makes a game scary, and said "fuck that, put it in a bag and throw it into a lake through the window", and put extremely lit environments with shitty enemies along with a coop character. That is NOT RE. That was a bloody failure. I honestly don't know what they want to do with RE. One side, theres me thinking going back to old school would make the game rise again, but the other side says people will be nitpicking and say it sucks, and the OTHER side says Capcom could do well either way if they played their fucking cards right for once instead of pulling the shams that RE5 and 6 were. Right now, all I can do is hopefully get RE2 and Dead Aim along with a few more PS games that I need to wet my pants. Meanwhile, I'll wait for Capcom's new success or failure. (btw, is Dead Aim good? It seems rather spooky with the first person aim + pitch black dark thing going on and zombies crawling from it)
no it's a fun rail shooter
Are you guys talking about that one for the original PS? Cause that thing was fun as shit.
Are you guys talking about that one for the original PS? Cause that thing was fun as shit.
No, the one on the Wii. I think you mean Survivor, which some call the shittiest horror game in existence. Can't remember much though.
Watch. They'll find from this "analyzing" that the game was simply too scary for people. They need to remove the zombies and other monsters, and replace them with something else. Like terrorists, or bunnies.
I thought this was funny when I first read it, but now I am thinking about it and it is an eerily high possibility.
