I could've just misunderstood that Engagdet article (mostly), but the way I understood is that SteamOS is similar to Big Picture, just running on a Linux variant, with very limited functionality...
That quote is about how it's not a general purpose operating system like Windows or other Linux distributions, and that it currently doesn't have Netflix.
Does that mean the wishing to hack around some will have to install a different OS first thing?
Why the hell would you even want to replace the OS? It's an embedded device. What the hell gain would you get from an alternate OS?
Why the hell would you even want to replace the OS? It's an embedded device. Valve's statement that they want the console to be "hackable" had me wishing for a completely open and unrestricted platform, especially considering that hardware.
That looks surprisingly unremarkable considering the hardware they're packing.
premium edition comes with a pack of flame decals
The thing about the SteamOS being limited worries me. No file system access, no media playback... Does that mean the wishing to hack around some will have to install a different OS first thing?
Im Crimson continues his quest to ensure that the smartness system is brought back.
This looks cool, but the Xbone looks like a VCR? I don't get you people.
Facepunch is a hivemind guys.
This looks cool, but the Xbone looks like a VCR? I don't get you people.
Facepunch isn't a hivemind. I agree though, I'm not liking the looks of this, and it really does look like a VCR. I was hoping for it to have some big-ol' steam logo on it somewhere.. but it really looks like a Digibox or some crap
Im Crimson continues his quest to ensure that the smartness system is brought back.
Smartness deducted points for spelling and grammar errors, not sure why you're attempting to sound clever.
Facepunch isn't a hivemind

Facepunch is a hivemind guys.
Two posts, same time, same argument, not a hivemind. Such beautiful irony :v:

Well at least they didn't make it cylindrical.
Where is the DVD/BluRay Drive on that thing?
it's steam the platform you digitally purchase and install things on even off-the-shelf hardcopies come with a serial number you can activate if it's available on steam
it's steam the platform you digitally purchase and install things on even off-the-shelf hardcopies come with a serial number you can activate if it's available on steam
He's making a joke about how it looks like a DVD/Blu-Ray player. :v:
Notice how every post related to Xbone and VCR gets dumbed by ZachPL. Seriously, mate, throw in some real arguments if you don't like specific posts. Your boxes are just irritating.
I wonder if it'll still look like this after all the hardware beta input. Make it a disco ball that projects the gaming footage all around the room, Valve, you know you want to!
I could've just misunderstood that Engagdet article (mostly), but the way I understood is that SteamOS is similar to Big Picture, just running on a Linux variant, with very limited functionality...
Thanks for the article! That does sound quite limiting. Too bad, I was hoping with SteamOS Linux could get a shot at becoming an OS you install instead of Windows, but that way it just seems better to dual boot with Windows if you want actual computer functionality on your Steam Machine.
Once again, Public Opinion is a thing. For fucks sake.
public opinion on the internet tends to be 90% that of those who are outraged the most
public opinion on the internet tends to be 90% that of those who are outraged the most
Public opinion and peer pressure. What comes of it is something of a "hivemind", as people like to call it, especially affecting enclosed communities with characteristics like Facepunch. It's been explained a thousand fucking times already in numerous threads, I didn't want to go into detail since I assumed just about everybody has educated themselves on the subject already.
I'm a bit disappointed you don't turn a plastic valve to turn the console on.
OH GOD, just imagine the startup intro. it should totally be like the classic ones from HL1/HL2 episodes [editline]4th November 2013[/editline]
And then they play the THX logo right after just for kicks.
I'm impressed, I would get this after my current rig's seen the end of it's life. (which could be a while? [editline]4th November 2013[/editline] I'm impressed, I would get this after my current rig's seen the end of it's life. (which could be a while)
I hope I can get a wired controller or allow the wireless one to be charged somehow, I'm already kind of sick of having to get new batteries for my controllers all the time.
[t]http://cwrailman.com/Photographing%20Models/Duracell%20Rechargeable%20batteries%20002a.jpg[/t]
Well looks sexy as hell imo. If I can replace, or dual boot the OS I'd get one the second I can afford it. But oviously you can because Valve's whole philosophy with this ordeal.
