The most notable difference to me, since I last played, is the faction system and how you can set the AI to use specific factions. (Or all of them at once, which results in Nazis, Space Mummies, and Wizards all in the same Dummy base.) That and there's way more modes.
Pretty much every addon I loved from the olden days is on the Workshop, too. Didn't expect to see AAL or DarkStorm.
I thought the creator of AAL pulled some early days legalese bullshit threats and an internet hissy fit to have his mod removed from existence? I remember being perma-banned on the Data Realms forums a few years back for rehosting it and posting a link since it had been long abandoned and people had been asking about it.
The game runs like absolute ass, it's about as feature complete as blurring your vision makes a rough painting the final product, but it's an absolute blast to play if you can get past that and free is honestly a very good price for this game. I'd otherwise say only pick it up on sale, the full price is robbery considering Data's established inability to do anything in a reasonable time frame.

You do realise that a FPS capture taken at game loading isn't really indicative of game performance right? The game literally runs everything on the CPU iirc(due to being entirely in LUA) and has a pretty small unit cap to the point you'll easily notice it auto killing units to make room for new ones.
Like yeah the game runs leagues better than it did back at build 20, but a significant amount of that came from better hardware we have now in 2017/2018 than we did then anyway, and I still wouldn't call it good performance now just because it manages to run okay if you stick within the pitiful limits the game sets for its self. That's like saying that when you turn literally all the features to low and get good FPS in the main menu that makes the port of AC:O, or whatever other poorly performing port you can think of, amazing.
That aside I didn't even really mean the over-all "run" of the game when I meant it ran like absolute ass, I should have clarified in the first place that's my bad, I meant more the bad UI and lack of actually competent implementations of features. The AI is a joke, most of the weapons and units aren't really balanced, etc. The terrain deformation was an amazing feature back around the build 20 days but it's pretty much nothing but novel at this point. The game doesn't justify the $20 price tag in 2018 to me. That's all. Is it a fun game and worth getting for free or cheap? Hell yeah, once you accept and work around the horrible flaws, but it's not $20 good considering the plethora of other games that $20 gets you.
How would one typically handle the defense in such a game? Dropping a ton of turrets near the entrance to the brain cave? Taking the brain off gold mining to stuff a shit-ton of walls blocking the entrance? Or just making sure you can hunt down the enemy brain before they get to yours? The AI doesn't seem to care too much that you're slowly mining through his bunker wall and would rather happily continue to flank yours.
I guess what I'm asking is if it's possible to turtle.
You can place the brain room at the highest point in the map so they can't reach you with jetpacks. Coupled with some knowledge of the AI dropzones or in this case, AI no-dropzones, your brain becomes almost invulnerable.
You could also cheese AI pathfinding by making two bottomless pits on both sides of your brain room with downward facing outlets.
I haven't played in ages so I'm not sure if these strats are still good.
I still remember checking the Datarealms forums for new mods and stuff after school all the time back way before this game got on Steam and when it was still being actively (but slowly) updated. I think I discovered it waaaay back in like Build 12 or 14 or something like that. Still a very nostalgic game for me.
Get it. You kinda get used to the janky movement after a while and the mod support adds so much, although some of the really old venerated ones aren't on the workshop I don't think. I seem to remember some cool magic themed ones, and then of course the whole AAL thing, I think that was the name of it.

Woah, easy there. It was just a joke. I thought the excessive question marks and the fact that I was screen shorting the loading screen when it wasn’t even loading files yet would give that away. My B.

Ah that's fair. My bad man. I thought you were serious and just being really snarky about it.

Jetpacking and shooting at the same time is very fun when You know what You're doing. One thing is really bothering me, and it's bots reaction time.
I'd spend some time fucking around on the zombie cave level to get a rough idea of how everything works and what you like in a relatively stress-free environment so that when you start doing other stuff it's just a few simple clicks away from dropping stuff in.
I like to drop in standard Coalition soldiers with a single rifle and a decent tier digger for the get-go and adjust as I clear out the place.
I've cleared the zombie cave level twice now but any time I go into a mission where enemies can actually shoot guns I get fuckin annihilated. Fun game tho.
"The game is written entirely in lue"
It isn't written entirely in lua, content like objects, their physical properties, animations and features are defined with lua and graphics, physics, AI, and some core game mechanics are all done by the engine, which is def. not written in lua. You can make scripted weapons, vehicles and actors yeah but it isn't entirely written in lua. It IS true that it is software accelerated though, so yeah it is CPU bound.
