We can't give you a synopsis because talking about the game in anything but the most vaguest of ways is a spoiler as to the nature of the game and it's story.
So no, just take our recommendation and go play it. It will either click with you, or it won't. (Because you're a Raphael)

I just played it and I have no clue what it's about. Maybe that's why everyone else is struggling.
I am also 100% definitely going to buy it. It was amazing.
As previously stated, the purpose of the game is to highlight the predefined nature of storytelling, in that games present themselves as player-driven while ultimately allowing for nothing the developers (narrators) did not already plan. It uses this idea as the stage for breaking the fourth wall.

really now, demos exist for this reason
yes, there is no way to make any choices in that "game". It didnt have a story and i dont see why that would make the game good. The narrative wasnt entertaining. Maybe for someone who loves lots of dry humour and getting their expectations messed up but i found it generally boring
The demo didn't have a story because the devs didn't want to spoil it.
It's the entire point as to why they made this fucking demo.
The demo is only there because they want to show how the game plays and how the narrative will play out during the actual story.
Your claim about the presence of choices are valid since the demo didn't have any. However, anyone who have played the original mod would know it would have it since it's at the core of the concept the writer is playing with.
Everyone is free to dislike something but there's clearly something wrong with you if you can't see what makes a game "good" in the eyes of the people who enjoyed it.
If you really want to put it in a genre I suppose you could say that it is a mildly interactive, narrated novel about choice
But that really says nothing about what it really is
I went into the demo expecting a pretentious ~arte~ anti-game with a humorous twist but I was pleasantly surprised. Now I'm definitely going to buy the game when it's out. Anyone who hasn't played the demo and thinks it's going to be bad should just play it. It's definitely worth it.
Hmm, my copy seems messed up. Every time I try and play it I keep getting stuck with this room with an 8 button and the demo won't show up. Is this happening to anyone else? Should I redownload?
Demo was amusing, not sure if I'd buy the full game though.
It's probably only going to be like 2 hours long.
Not gonna tell me what it's about? I'm not gonna play it.
You're wrong.
Not even objectively.

Well, it's not like it's going to be $60 or anything.
If it's going to be more than $5 then that would still be far too much.

The first one was about 40-50 minutes worth of content, but that's if you play all of the endings. Now I'm going to make an educated guess and assume the full game will be much longer. The dev said there was going to be three times more content than the original.
The demo froze for like 20 seconds when I tried to close it. I wasn't sure if it was coincidence or them just trying to make another point that the player isn't in control. :(
I fucking love the stanley parable
But I think they're a bit too overzealous with making it seem like video game creators are villains because we make it so you feel like you have free choice but you don't.
That's not really an intentional thing, we can't give anyone true freedom, we can make the sandbox really really really big but eventually you'll hit the little wooden wall at the edge.
Anyway, I digress, the original mod was amazing, had some beautiful narration and some amazing writing. I'm incredibly excited to play a sequel, though I doubt it'll be as amazing this time since I have a decent guess of what they'll be trying to pull (hopefully they use that against me though.)

how so? do you know how long the game is going to play? or what it will contain?

I think the sense of humor that they showed in the demo is something to look forward compared to the old game. I mean hell, the whole eight game and cup in bin thing so pointless and stupid, but it's something that other game developers wouldn't risk this because they have to live up to what makes a game, a game. The Stanley parable does the opposite of that, and I cant wait to see how they show this.
I think that's the main problem here with some people. They are expecting a game when they play it, having all the choices and activities that the developer has set out for them, but (in a sense) they get the opposite. The Stanley parable focuses on showing the player the different ways the 'game' can break the forth wall. This is shown on the whole "trying to find a demo" thing, as if the game is controlled by the narrator, and all the problems that come with him being on control are not supposed to be part of the game.
of course this game isn't for everyone, but you don't have to bash it just because the idea hasn't been done in a game to this extent.
Out of all the terrible shitty pretentious interactive novel video games, the stanley parable isnt one of them and it was just a mod.
The demo was better than any of those other games ive played, like Gone Home or Dear Esther.
Its funny, witty, satirical, and interesting in a good way, it doesnt pretend to be something super sophisticated to try and seem smart, its just well done, so glad it became an actual retail game, so pumped to buy it.
words
It examines linearity and illusion of choice through the use of narration.
That's as specific I can get without giving anything away.
I noticed that if you start the demo and then while in-game pause and try to do a new game, the button doesn't work.
Pretty fun I give it an 8/10
I will play it later today!
Done it days ago, 't will be nice to have food for thoughts. (Hopefully, my mind won't be gorged)
Is it too much to ask for someone to give me a basic synopsis of the fucking thing? Or at least what genre it's in? Simply telling me to play it and calling me an idiot if I don't makes me less likely to actually play it.
It's pathetic to ask what the hell kind of game it is before I try it? Really?
Wrong.
This is entire irrelevant, but yes I have. It's one of my favorite shooters ever made, matter of fact. It's also the first FPS I ever played, before HL2 I only ever played driving and flying games, and it pretty much singlehandedly shaped my taste in shooters.
I still fail to see how me playing or not playing HL2 is in any way relevant to this discussion, though.
ALL I WANT IS A SODDING DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME! What genre is it, what's the basic idea, you know, the sort of thing that LITERALLY EVERY OTHER GAME EVER SOLD is advertised with? I'll give it a try if someone will tell me what the fuck it's about.
YES! Exactly this.
Which it is for me.
And this is all I want someone to tell me regarding the Stanley Parable. IF someone will give me this I may very well try it. As it stands I have no idea what it's about, let alone if it interests me or not, and people being so militant and hostile about it just turns me off from trying it even further.
[Sp]It's an artistic adventure game experience, similar to Dear Esther in that there isn't exactly a game in the traditional sense, in which you walk around various environments while a narrator like in the demo talks to you and lends commentary on the various choices you will make in the game. Themes explored include, but are not limited to, the illusion of choice in video games, the fourth wall that seperates the player from the avatar, the meaning of playing video games in general, and the meaning of free will itself. This is all done with some of the sharpest sardonic wit I have ever come across. I should point out that while I considered Dear Esther to be a waste of time, I consider the Stanley Parable to not be.[/sp]
That's the best elevator pitch I could muster. You were better off going into this game blind and without expectation or prejudice before I told you this. By telling you this I essentially ruined half the fun.

Also, 8.
Oh Jesus, the 8 room had me in stitches, and he had so many lines, it just kept going and going and going, and I just kept pressing that button over and over again, laughing so hard.
Definitely going to buy this.

I ran him out of lines.
I ran him out of lines.
So did I.
I played it and it was very weird and I was scared all the time, why do they have to make it it so scary and dark?

It's not a horror game silly.

But the Stanley Parable aims to touch ALL your feelings
I wish there was an 8 emotion booth that just looped the automated "8" voice track.
For anyone on the fence because the article didn't mention this, the demo is not a part of the full game, but rather a 20-30 minute trek through more content, to show you how the game feels to play.
[editline]11th October 2013[/editline]
aka no spoilers go play it
I thought this was a really awesome thing to do. Will definitely give this a go when I get home.
