EA shutting down online services for more older games
mainly because you should campare's the amount of valve's game releases and EA's game releases since 1998
valve can have that, as they dont release that many games
EA cant, as they releases lots of games within a 2 year period

Why does Facepunch have this undying love for hating DLC?
EA/Activision is NOTHING like this. Sure, a $15 map pack is expensive, but they have never done anything like that.
EA, for the MOST part, doesn't do Day 1 DLC, but they DO do plenty of 'DLC' anyway. They just call it Expansion Packs, and they sell for far more than most DLC does. Sims 2 had something like 18 expansions. Eight. Teen. Not only that, That much content, and then some, was NOT in Sims 3. As if its hard to import shit already made for Sims, into Sims
Also, Bioware is now owned by EA. Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3 are probably the two biggest games that have come out from Bioware since they were acquired other than TOR. MMOs don't really count since Day1 DLC is pretty much non existent with MMOs. Look how much DLC shit these two games had
Everyone's bashing this move, but is anyone still playing these games online? I think that's the bottom line you guys.
Oh yes, with how much money they have it's just impossible to keep up the servers.
I'm surprised the master servers for the old battlefield games are still up, actually. I think the 1942 ones are still going.
I know master servers for BF2142 are still online, I still play it sometimes.
Need for Speed ProStreet for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Thank god the PC version isn't getting killed, ProStreet is quite fun online and fairly active still.
No idea why they are killing Godfather 2 though.

It may as well be that no one has been playing these games for a while, but think about it for a second. You, and some of your friends come together to play this amazingly great good old game, and then realize the bullshit company behind it decided to remove the servers from existense and NOT provide or ever release any form of dedicated or listen server.
Sorry that a company cannot run servers for every game they release
Old games? They are quite new. Yet we have Valve still updating the HL1, game that came out in 1998. Clearly some companies care more for their games than others.
HL1 is singleplayer. You can't exactly shut down servers for that. CS 1.6 on the otherhand...

There has not been an update directed at HL1 by its self on the news page at all. The engine gets the occasional bug fix but that is pretty much it.
Then they will force the DEVS to make Mass Effect 4, and every single level will be a DLC.
Mass Effect 4: Episode 1 - $19.99

AND multiplayer. Both were built-in.
It had a VERY popular multiplayer fanbase too, and that still exists, as does the 1.6 userbase.
Drop support for Battlefield 2 and I will consume your children alive, EA!
To be fair, the amount of games Valve has published and the amount EA has published is worlds apart.
Still seems ridiculous though because some of these are only two or three years old.

Stuff like this is why I haven't bought BF2142 yet even though I really want to play it.
Maybe if there's a good singleplayer mod I will one day.

True, but consider that Valve doesn't have to run servers for HL1 or really any of their games except for maybe Portal 2. They just have to keep the master server list up to date.
I'll miss Bf2 ad BF2142 online if they get cut, but I won't miss team jacking.

And yet, life goes on.
What the hell EA Create isn't even old. I guess no one bought it.

tens of thousands of people play BF2/2142/1942.
I can't imagine many of the games they just shut down had more then a hundred or so.

Well I wouldn't say tens of thousands, I almost wouldn't even say thousands, at least not for 2142.
What the fuck Godfather 2
I already had problems registering that shit over the internet, now they even shut it down
EA is dead to me

Oh, boo fucking hoo, they shut down the online servers for a game that had nobody using the online aspect.
Oh, boo fucking hoo, they shut down the online servers for a game that had nobody using the online aspect.
Yes, boo fucking hoo, in a few months they'll probably start shutting down BF2 servers.
The problem here isn't the servers being shut down IMO (although they could stay up a few years longer), it's that singleplayer games with an MP aspect may become impossible to beat when the MP closes down. See: ME3.
yet people continue to buy ea's crap
Public companies don't give a shit about customers. It's all about getting the numbers up and first day sales. Along with reassuring interviews that answer nothing so that their stock prices are kept level.
Get equity or die trying.

I would say that a large audience is spread out through various mods.
Alas, such is the downfall of console games, they often rely on manufacturer/publisher support to run the online
multiplayer, as we've seen with the success of Xbox Live.
It'd be really interesting to see a console game that runs on player-hosted dedicated servers, like a large portion of PC FPS games. Unless I just don't play enough console games, but I'm pretty sure most if not all have been using matchmaking.
I was about to have a heart attack.
No one is taking down Bad Company 1 while I'm alive.
I'm slightly laughing at people thinking BF1942/2/2142 is going to get shut down.
All those titles are on Gamespy's master server. Not EA's.
On the other hand, with all these other titles (On consoles), EA has to run the show directly, and running a bunch of dedicated servers that barely any plays any more is a huge money sink. With the PC games they simply have a contract with Gamespy to run a server browser, and everyone else is paying for their own servers. To be frank, GSPs would be PISSED if EA told them to shut down service for those PC games. No private servers for Battlefield games = No income for GSPs.
Now of course, there is always the risk of Gamespy going fubar. And that's totally never happened before
Since when did Saboteur have online access?
This. The only game I have here is Saboteur.
It'll probably be like Mercenaries 2, where EA shuts down the servers and apparently the game will crash on the main menu if you are connected to Xbox Live at all. Not even trying to access online anything, just if you're connected.

Regardless of who is in control, it's just not very faithful to the users to not allow dedicated servers.
