!!! – Valve Releases Video Of Steam Controller In Action

configurable keys is one of the most requested features for me, I dislike certain controls on certain games for the xbox 360 controller and dislike it how i can't select one button and replace it with the other, like switch A to X for example, instead i have to find only 4 control schemes that I can select and most of them are not what I wanted.
now that this controller can change my keys around to what i perfer, it helps me get the keys that i wanted and make it alot easier for me to game without having to press each and every key to find out which one does on while in a big gaming moment such as robbing a bank or trying to find that roll key to get out of that massive clusterfuck of granades that was launched near me.
Are you kidding? Touchpads are usually flat and smooth, this thing has fucking bumps and grooves on something you're going to be rapidly swiping your thumb on for hours :v:
I'll reserve some of my judgement for actually trying it but I'm even more convinced than ever that this looks painful and awful to use
The difference is you aren't awkwardly trying to use the laptop keyboard and touchpad at the same time. A laptop touchpad is made for one hand and casually browsing the internet and opening some programs here and there, not gaming. You really can't compare the two aside from how a touchpad works, which is all you should be worried about. Besides, you're exaggerating the traction it provides. It's just two circles, not some sort of microscopic razerblade design.
On this controller, the touchpads are handled completely differently. Imagine if you had to use the PS4 controller's touch pad to move and such. It would be awful.
With this controller, you're sacrificing a little bit of comfortability with just being able to keep the joysticks down in one direction to have continued movement, for a new system with a much faster, accurate, and quicker way of movement.
Aside from ergonomics, controller design really has not changed much for a decade imo, while games have undeniably changed quite a bit. It's time for some new ideas, even if they fail.
you can tell he's having a lot of trouble playing CS:GO in that video lol
I want to see someone do one of those insane as fuck rocket jump maps in tf2, used to be very into that and can safely say you won't get the accuracy to do that.

You wouldn't with a controller either so whats your point? This is just an alternative to the standard 2joystick2buttongroup controllers, not some end-all-be-all replacement.
It looks to me like a middle point between controllers and keyboard+mouse setups.
I think everyone is completely missing the point. It's not easy to use a mouse and keyboard while on a sofa. Of course it's not going to be as good at a m+kb, but compared to a 360/ps3 controller, it looks incredible.
I do it all the time and it's pretty easy and comfortable.

He headshots every single shot,
and there is no aim assists what-so-ever.
Its not the fastest run ever, but i very much doubt i would be faster with a regular controller.

What surface do you use for your mouse then?

You missed the point - I wasn't talking about keyboard + touchpad vs this, I was responding to someone saying that they look "more comfortable" than a normal touchpad, when they don't - it's just flat out wrong to say a surface with bumps on it will be more comfortable to constantly swipe your fingers across than a flat one
Saying this controller has a new and unique design is fucking goofy anyway, it's pretty much the same basic layout as a ps/xbox controller but with touchpads instead of joysticks which is an uncomfortable downgrade at best
Nah screw it, I need to go to sleep
God damnit.

Whatever? Mice have come a long way and work well on any surface, also helps when you have the sensitivity all the way up.
If I'm lying down on the couch then I just use my leg and if I'm in the recliner then I use the arm rest.

Bullshit, that'd be awful for pretty much any game.
You also have to have the keyboard on your lap for moving.
It might work. It's kind of like the looking system for Rage on iOS where you touch anywhere on the screen and drag your finger in a direction to look in that direction, and if you stop moving your finger it won't continue moving the camera unlike other games which use a kind of virtual thumb pad.
Might make it easier to play PC games in the living room but I imagine it would still be annoying to use. Also the design just looks heaps unergonomic regarding the position of his thumb, and the device could probably have more buttons on it.

Works for me.

So you just plop your mouse on your leg and play.
How.
I'm really interested in how this performs emulating analog sticks, I feel like it would make consolecentric games way more comfortable to play
I seriously couldn't understand how he does stuff. Rather than using those touchpads, he almost does nothing. R1/L1 R2/L2 substitutes?
There's two sets of triggers on the back, and another set of buttons on the back somewhere else iirc.

You don't need to move all that much when you have the sensitivity maxed and I've been operating computers and playing games with maxed sensitivity for many years, so I guess I'm just used to it?
Also, I play strategy games mostly and when I do play shooters... they're usually slower paced and tactical.

I hate to be that guy, but have you used it for long enough to tell how comfortable it is? I mean I get what you're saying; the friction after a while might get irritating. Problem is that I get that anyway with a traditional controller because large hands and my fingers need to hold the thing awkwardly and readjust all the time, especially on the thumb sticks.

Well I don't know about you but that sounds fucking awful to me.

Playing on max sensitivity seems like a good idea if you're terrified of the corners of your mousepad.

And the whole using the mouse on your leg just sounds horrid.
sorry i'm 2 pro 4 u scrubs
The touchpad things work like trackballs, not like a laptop trackpad. Meaning you can swipe it fast in a direction and let go and you can let it keep rolling until you stop it
I'm gonna go on a limb here and say that I think anyone could get used to using trackpads for controlling aim/movement in games. I played Minecraft on my macbook pro for 2 years using the trackpad and once I got used to it I could control just as well if not better than using a mouse. I also never had any problems with my finger being sore or in pain (used middle finger to swipe the trackpad).
