ESDF is the superior choice. It opens up so many more convenient buttons around it in comparison to WASD. I only stopped using it because of the deluge of console ports in circa-2008 that had godawful control rebinding support.
Tribes 2 made perfect use of ESDF with its huge array of controls. Within easy reach of my left hand I had grenades, mines, zoom, voice comms, quick weapon swaps, command mode, chat, and beacon placement - all of which could be accessed without taking my hands off the movement keys. Simply not possible with WASD.
I don't use ESDF because i have these chubby little fingers and they don't reach too far.
Bethesda. Stock Skyrim bind for sprinting is alt
I forgot about that, kept alttabbing
I sometimes use ESDF by mistake and wonder how the hell did my fingers go there.
I've been using arrow keys forever, since that's what my Dad raised me on. I really hate when shitty ports don't let you bind to arrow keys/don't even have rebinding.
I remember using arrow keys when I was a kid. I also used the right mouse button for jumping. Don't know how I did it.
I used to use HJVM. I don't think I can do it anymore, but when I did it let me reach all my keys easily for any binds i had.
To think a few years ago playing UT2004 I was using the arrow keys and my pinkie finger on ctrl to jump and shift to crouch.
What was I thinking.
I was even doing this on those trail/bunnyhop maps.

Ctrl to crouch, mmb to jump is what I do. Works out perfectly fine.
ESDF sounds convenient, but instead of ctrl and shift my pinky would rest on Windows key and "<" which 90% of games don't recognize, so I don't know how that'd be worth it.
I must say I never thought about using anything else than WASD since I first heard of that, been using either the numpad or arrow keys before.
However RDFG and the pinky on Z feels a bit more comfy, I always find it awkward to press shift with the pinky. Might just be my fingers though.
This article made me think of something; do people typically put their ring finger on A in the WASD configuration? Because I have my pinky finger on A and basically follow the "home row" approach for my left hand except my ring finger rests on W instead of S.
Ur weirrd.
Pinky is for shift,, ctrl etc

???
From Delta force and half life right they way up to BF3 i was Arrows for movment and the imediate keys on the left and right for everything else hell even the keys above. ctrl for crouch, 1 for jump, 0 for prone. del and pg down for lean.
Only reason i stopped was because BF3 did not recognise the keypad bindings i wanted.
Since then it's WASD in everything new, still use arrow keys in my old games though, force of habbit.

Move with left stick look with mouse?
Yeah I'm confused too
As for the lack of ctrl on ESDF, I've always bound crouch or whatever to C and the tons of other keys I gained back always more than made up for it.
How do you press C though? You'd have to either take one of your fingers off the movement keys or awkwardly tuck your thumb in under your palm.
How do you press C though? You'd have to either take one of your fingers off the movement keys or awkwardly tuck your thumb in under your palm.
I use Toggle Crouch whenever possible. Also, I have big hands so I can easily press C and F with the same finger, and release either with control.
That, or I just don't go right when crouching. :v:
[editline]25th June 2016[/editline]
What I need to do is practice pressing Ctrl more. My pinky can easily reach it, it's just a matter of muscle memory.
I sympathize with ASCX. QWDS was my rebind when I was just starting with shooters. While it was comfy, it meant using capslock for sprinting and that got annoying after a while.

Think the proper name is Gaming Keypad
When I was still playing Titanfall, I used Space for sprinting, Shift for aiming down sights and right-click for jumping. The rest was a normal WASD setup.
It worked pretty damn well, too.
Funny, nobody mentions using the numpad keys. After the arrow keys I first used numpad keys for quite some time, then switched to wasd.

Game pads are much nicer than 'traditional' keyboards because they're simply keyboards specifically made for gaming, and programmable to be whatever I want according to the game I'm playing, so instead of having a keyboard that was designed around typing with a giant space bar and all that shit I can instead I can have the weapons on the thumb, not above my movement keys (Wasd or Esdf) which is insanely inconvenient and awkward, and then I can have the jump on the pinkie above control or something.
normal keyboards are over all kind of shitty for games in comparison really, they aren't made for it. The giant space bar is a massive waste of space. like they're extremely capable of it but it's a lot better to use a number pad or just a full gamepad because it's a smaller and dedicated thing just for that. That plus you don't even really need to program a gamepad either, just bind it to some default settings and use one profile.
I've changed to just a steam controller for now though, I like it much better.

though, sometimes I used to use a controller and a mouse at the same time. It was really nice. thumb for movement, then trigger, bumper, etc. Then I just have weapons and everything on the mouse (MMO mouse)
Clearly, we should just use hjkl #justvimthings.
Also yes, keypads really are top notch. Especially for MMO games. But even for other genres too. I don't own one and actually should get one, but I've used them before.
Regrettably though that would mean throwing out my beast of a model m. That thing is huge and takes up my desk.
I use WASD and I'm thinking about rebinding use to be right click since I'm playing a lot of Deus Ex and Thief lately
Also why don't more games have leaning? Planetside 2 would be way easier if I could lean around corners
Arrow keys are still good for fighting games and usually emulated games.

The video game industry only figured out leaning relatively recently, technology wise

having use on the back button feels amazing tbh
I started using ESDF years ago, and have always appreciated it in games that have a fair amount of keybinds since it frees up three convenient keys to bind to whatever I want. I've also despised CTRL for crouch since it was always a strain on my pinky, so today I always bind it to W since it's just one key up from my left ring finger. It's a super comfy setup for me, almost everyone I talk to finds the idea absurd for whatever reason.

Back button as in backspace?

mouse4 or mouse5, AKA back and forward on the mouse
I like it set to scroll up though, with reload as scroll down
