DayZ is the perfect example why mod tools are important. After the release of DayZ, ArmA 2 sales increased with 500%. 500%! That's a whole lot of sales concidering ArmA 2 was 3 years old when DayZ was released. Also, It'd be fucking awesome goofing around in the Frostbite engine.
That's more due to ArmA2 being a niche as fuck game, and DayZ being a zombie game, which sell like mad. People weren't buying ArmA2 because the game is cool and the mods were cool, they were buying the ability to play DayZ. BF already sells a ton of copies, mod tools would have such minimal impact on that, that it would cost them more to work on the ability to distribute the middle-ware, compact the build process and content pipeline so that you don't need a specialist to configure it for your particular setup, etc. We've known their actual tools were quite nice for a while, that was never the problem, the complexity came in setting up the content pipeline (I remember them mentioning it needed a small server farm in BC2, probably slightly less by BF3), and the cost of distributing any libraries and third party tools they are using (which isn't cheap).
there are no plans to release the engine for fans to tinker with--unlike CryEngine and Unreal Engine. Bach explains that "just because other people can use the Frostbite engine, doesn't mean that it's a neat package that anyone can just download, and start an executable, and then you’re on your way." "I'm not saying that people wouldn't pick that up," Bach added. "But it would be a very limited crowd that would be able to use this. Of course you could spend more time on doing that, instead of building a better game, and to us, that is way more important."
ok, that's fine, I wasn't planning on buying another DICE game anyways or any EA game, for that matter
Why do so many people feel like they're somehow owed mod tools? It always amazes how people abuse and whine at developers when they aren't given something non-essential, which would take a significant amount of effort to put together, for free.
Mod tools = infinite replayability simple as that
PC gamers are going to cry about mod tools to the end of time, it's just how things are. Honestly I don't give a damn if a game has mod tools or not. If they do, cool. I can get some new maps. If not, I'll have fun with what I've got. If mod tools are a make or break for you there's a bit of an issue.
I worry about Dragon Age 3, not only because of how DA2 turned out but because Dragon Age 1 had a huge modding scene thanks to Bioware releasing amazing mod tools. That's one of the things that kept me playing Dragon age origins.

Mostly Bethesda's games but still.

Doesn't change the fact that BI studios were selling copies like crazy, as well as the fact that it could happen to any game that makes modding available. I'm sure BF2 sold a lot of copies because of PR, even though it was kind of old at that point.
they've never stated that it was too complex, just that it depended on too many specific things to be viable to run on any machine they licence tools from other companies like everyone else, this could also be a problem because then any of those companies could be like "no" and then that would be that the issue is that a bunch of people aren't aware of the difference between engines/toolkits/workflow/other things that don't have names but are nevertheless important, and so they see a screenshot of a level editor and go "HEY THE REST OF THE ENGINE SHOULD BE JUST AS COMPATIBLE AND USER-FRIENDLY"
I never stated that they lied or something, I never cared as much about mod tools as many other BF fans did. I'm just stating that there actually was a plausible explaination at some point. Although, I can see other fans' point, BF series has one hell of a history of modding and map making, one of the greatest games of the franchise was built pretty much upon usermod.
Oh fuck off will you.
he's correct a limited crowd of people would use the mod tools because, get this, more people play the game on the PS3 and 360 than on the PC. here's some stats from bf3stats, players playing in 2012. so therefore it'd be better for them to devote their resources into finishing up BF3 than spend time making mod tools for BF3.
