Couldn't they have just published it digitally on the nintendo marketplace?
I think you'd still need a publishing license/Nintendo would still have to support them. Imagine Crysis 3 being published by Nintendo, same studio that publishes Zelda and Mario. That'd be weird.

I guess it's still possible there may be a port in the future, things like that have happened before.

Even without physical production, there's still a whole lot of costs that need to be covered to publish a game on any platform. The Wii U in many people's eyes isn't considered the right platform to be playing 'hard-core' shooters on, so it doesn't get a big market-share in that field.

I wonder how they'd have abused the gimmick?
Always on tactical mode or nanovision? Even quicker weapon customisation?
