The metagame was like 80% of the original game. Given how much people want to see it compared to the jack shit that they have shown of it, I tend to imagine they don't have crap for metagame. Furthermore procedurally generated first person missions are damn near impossible to get right. And on top of all of that, a massive portion of XCOM was the terrain destruction. Blowing holes in the side of a UFO or lighting shit on fire. It even had strategic considerations because blowing up stuff in the UFO meant less alien artifacts. Less alien artifacts meant less money or research opportunities. All that said, if they can just manage to get the metagame right, I will forgive just about any flaws with the tactical combat. So if they DO manage to pull it off, I will be pleased. But for the time being, the outlook is not good. We will see how it plays out. I'm not writing it off, but XCOM had an unusually good atmosphere. Awesome? They had T-rexes with guns. Also chrysalids? They would be fucking TERRIFYING in first person. There Instead we have guys in awkward suits using grease guns. Aside from the fact that there is no point in history where a US special operations unit would truly have preferred grease guns, they also lack the iconic armor variants from the original game. That blue battle armor simply has to make an appearance.
......Wow....from you just summerizing that it must have been the gameplay that set it apart. Not joking, that sounds like THE most generic fucking thing I've ever heard. T-Rexs with guns....that's like landsharks(For those that get the joke, good for you.) For Christ's sake I played the originals and while I loved the metagame and everything(in fact it was the best experience ever for an older game). It was the most generic pile of trash I've ever fucking seen. You're defending a generic game by saying this is generic, well I'll give you a clap for the irony.
And this kids, is how you cash in on a good game title.
As me and a friend were talking abaut this we agreed that the game acctualy looks fun and shit. But WHY name it x-com they could have called it something else. That just confuses me. Its just probably do attract pepole who like the original x-com games. I forgot who the devs were but whoever made silent storm should try do make a new x-com game.
My hopes were slightly up because of the previous trailer, but this trailer looked like a mess. Even if I ignore that they're raping X-com, it still looks like a pretty shitty game.
DrugUnit: Or 2K could get Firaxis Studios (who they own) to make the X-COM game. Oh wait, they don't care and think that TBS/RTS doesn't sell. Well I wonder what that means for Firaxis. Golden opportunity for Firaxis to shine? Nah; get those guys who helped out our main studio with Bioshock 2 to do a whole game based on this IP which has had difficulty being an FPS in the past with very precisely laid out mechanics. We'll even give them their own studio! I'm sure this will end well. Oh, and get our marketing department to pretty much refuse to put up -any- imagery or concept art of any strategic elements. Just list them and show the combat stuff in trailers and screenshots. Nobody cares about the strategy anyway; all they care about is the combat. Besides: Strategy games don't sell on consoles. And we're going multi-platform with a PC port of the console game.
what the fuck does "generic" even mean anymore. everyone on FP has used it so fucking much that it could describe anything that grass is so generic
I don't even know, which is the point of what I posted that. Anyone can say that this, or blue armor, or t-rexes with guns is generic. Yelling, "OH MY GOD THAT"S GENERIC" doesn't actually fucking make it generic. I also want to point to the people who rated me dumb. The gameplay was the only thing that kept me playing. Here's the rundown on what I've seen so far. Secret Government Organization(Never been done before, right guys?) Blue Power Armor(Huh...space anyone?) Fighting grey aliens(.....) X.....(What else uses X for unknown?) T-rexes with guns(Because having bear calvry isn't enough) Would you guys like me to visit the rest of it? I'm not asking you too look at it from the point of view that you fondly remember the game from when you were a kid. I'm asking you, as of today, would that not be blasted as being the most generic pile of shit ever made.
He didn't even say it was generic.
Who didn't? Because I was agreeing with guy I replied to.
My hopes were slightly up because of the previous trailer, but this trailer looked like a mess. Even if I ignore that they're raping X-com, it still looks like a pretty shitty game.
I think the reason why the 2010 trailer looked good was because it looked different. They where saying at that point they wanted the aliens to not resemble humans in any way to make them more freaky, hence the blobs, but now they've gone and made soldiers out of them and make it look like a war more than a stand-off like it looked when they brought this trailer out: [editline]4th June 2011[/editline] I think it's fallen into another case of 'the fans like this bit so lets expand it'. The death monoliths where things that you should fear above all else, but people must have liked the idea of fighting them so they shoved more in and now rather than saying 'Do not fuck with these dudes', it's more 'Yeah they're pretty tough, but look how good it looks to kill them'. By overcoming what looks like super bosses in the trailer takes out all the excitement of fighting them.
Looks just as much like shit as the last trailer Fuck this I'll go preorder Xenonauts right now
Is this linear and non-destructible? I saw exploding stuff in the trailer, but I figure that's scripted, along with the maps being hand made.
eh looks okay
Xenonauts is the only thing that makes me accept 2K's rape of the XCOM IP
Xenonauts is the only thing that makes me accept 2K's rape of the XCOM IP
Is this going to become the same situation as EA and the CnC series. If so, just stop, stop right now.
This trailer made me glad I pre-ordered Xenonauts.
Is this going to become the same situation as EA and the CnC series. If so, just stop, stop right now.
...what?
If I was bothered to do it, I'd totally make an X-Com megathread and talk about the awesomeness of UFO Defense up to Apocalypse.
Humanoid aliens :(
...what?
When EA bought Westwood, and then people started saying they were killing Westwood, the final nail in the coffin is when it got sucked into EALA.
X-COM's aliens are far from generic, sans the little grey men, are you telling me aliens who turn your squad into more aliens is something that every game has? And this game, fuck this game hard, I mean my god I didn't even grow up with X-COM and only got around to playing it this year, but this still pisses me off.
