damn thats a ton of cheats, game may not be all that great but more games need a wide variety of cheats to just do whatever with
Wow, and I thought the cheat list for GTA San Andreas was big
game may not be all that great
I hope you're just speaking in general with this statement because Shovel Knight is amazing.
I hope you're just speaking in general with this statement because Shovel Knight is amazing.
im not that and the graphics/style is a pain to look at
im not that and the graphics/style is a pain to look at
You poor poor soul.
How do these translate to WiiU?
You poor poor soul.
I don't like it that much either.
How do these translate to WiiU?
they're just codes you enter as your filename for a new save, so exactly the same I imagine.
You poor poor soul.
poor soul for not wanting to look at a terrible artstyle that tried to be NES while NES looked terrible (nor could the NES even do many of the colors in the game)?
poor soul for not wanting to look at a terrible artstyle that tried to be NES while NES looked terrible (nor could the NES even do many of the colors in the game)?
They did an interview about that, actually. In total there were only four or five colors the NES could not do, and you only see one or two of them at a time.
Though I didn't like shovel knight at all it's nice that they did this. It sucks that cheatcodes are part of the ~retro aesthetic~ instead of being a fun little thing for both players and devs.
Code 324: X&BUTT Butt Mode, but with more Butts

poor soul for not wanting to look at a terrible artstyle that tried to be NES while NES looked terrible (nor could the NES even do many of the colors in the game)?
First off, some beautiful things can come from working under limitations. Probably my all-time favorite piece of limited work is the theme from Monty on the Run for Commodore64, go look it up, it's nuts what was capable with only 3 channels of sound. Metal Slug also comes to mind when pixelart is brought up. Secondly, this is a game where you're a knight wielding a shovel bouncing on enemies like a pogo stick and fighting equally bizarre enemies. Suspend your disbelief for a few minutes to appreciate just how silly the game is and just how out of place it would be with a different style of art. Hand-drawn is definitely an option, but remember that the game was made on a budget; and instead of doing pixelart solely out of convenience, they drove the point home to create a game that very well could have been released in the era it is paying tribute to. Thirdly, they only cheated in a few cases with the pallete. The dark purple in Iron Whale, the dark red in Lost City, Polar Knight's sheepskin clothing, and some of the villager's darker skin tones. Otherwise, they've stayed true to what the NES and Famicom were capable of displaying; with sprites even adhering to the 3 colors + transparency rule.

The players are clearly having fun hunting these cheats down, and I'm pretty sure as a dev you have to of had a sense of humor first to make a "butt butt" cheat. Clearly though it's a soulless attempt at the "~~~retro aesthetic~~~" though. (I mean, even though they actually nailed the retro aesthetic correctly and it's really nice)
You know, not liking something popular isn't really much of an achievement, so I'm not sure why so many of you felt the need to shoehorn it into your posts.
