The reason people keep buying consoles is because they're only $250-$400 USD. No matter how much you say a $700 USD machine will get you ten times the performance, it's still a good $400 more than your average console, and not everyone is willing to spend that. Not to mention the fact that prebuilts are almost always more expensive than that, and your average console gamer doesn't really know all that much about building a PC, and probably isn't confident enough to try.

Suck it, Kotick
Kotick has never been really hostile towards PC gaming has he? Seems like he doesn't really care.
I know Ubisoft and most Japanese devs hate PC gaming.
Hey! Farmville is a game!
My friend's grandmother bought an Alienware just to play Farmville. So hardcore.

Yeah but most people who have consoles also have PCs, and not to mention a proper TV for the console. The combined cost of all three of those is about how much a PC suit for gaming costs

Just sell the TV and you could afford to build a decent gaming PC.

Welp, too late for ya'll.
Not everyone has the same tastes as you. I already barely have enough time to play the games I do play as it is.

most people who have both PCs and consoles have a PC that wouldn't run most games out today at any decent settings. Hence the reason they have a console in the first place. Unless of course they fall into the demographic of people who know a thing or two about PCs and got a good gaming one.

Like me; build a good PC then buy an Xbox from a coworker.

Or like me, build a good PC and win a PS3.
Well no shit.
Many people I know of have actually switched to PC from consoles.
Most of my friends have. It started, strangely enough, with RTS games. They got hooked on Starcraft 2... then I got them playing Dawn of War (they're all 40k fans as well)... then it just went crazy. Now they play free games like World of Tanks (pretty fucking good for a F2P game if you ask me) or even p2p games like EVE.
Consoles and PCs will never overtake eachother.
Infact there was never this kind of fight back in the 90's. This only started happening because the PC gaming community suddenly grew an ego somewhere between 2001 and now.
PC gaming was the only gaming community for a long time. I'm guessing you didn't play multiplayer Doom, Quake, Command & Conquer? It was never about having an ego, it was about having higher standards for games.

lolwut? So people have a warped sense of reality because they don't like JRPGs and shooters with gimmicky motion controls? You might have had an argument if you were talking about Steel Battalion, Chromehounds, or maybe something like Red Dead Redemption... but I have no idea what games you're on about. I half expected you to come out and say something like "PERSONA AND LEGEND OF DRAGOON HAVE DEFINED A GENERATION OF GAMING EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE LIKE EVERY OTHER TURN BASED RPG". Yeah, I played lots of the "best" console games and found most of them disappointing or lacking in depth. It often happened that a good story was marred by boring, uninspired gameplay. Hey, let's play Ratchet and Clank 9000, the same as every other platformer since Crash Bandicoot on the playstation!
Yeah, no thanks man. Keep the console games, I'm gonna go play some 4X games, maybe some Mechwarrior, ARMA, Total War... who knows.
Not everyone has the same tastes as you. I already barely have enough time to play the games I do play as it is.
This is extremely true, but your sarcastic statement alone shows just exactly what I'm talking about.
A lot of PC gamers ignore the important developments that occur on Consoles that don't port over to PC.
This creates two different trees of development that go over to the console games that do port over to PC.

Oh that's cool, so if Spyro, Crash, Mario, Icarus and other classic games didn't exist, where would we be?
By completely ignoring an ENTIRE branch of gaming you're denying yourself an important experience in the gaming genre.
But go ahead and make this a fanboy war.
Also good job ignoring the Arcade Communities of the 70's and 80's.
The Nintendo Community, the Sega COmmunity, Atari had a community.
Any sort of console war had a community on both sides.
I'm sure when he was talking about communitys it was about Online communitys.
Which there was an online community, ESPECIALLY for defunct or used Arcade game systems.
Just like computers, there are magazines dedicated to the consoles. There are websites dedicated to consoles, or companies in general.
There are websites dedicated to the Legend of Zelda and most of the other big console games in history.
He's completely ignoring a massive part of the Gaming Community as a whole because of ego.

I'm going into Game Design as a career choice. I need to properly understand the history, culture, and theories behind the Gaming Industry, the way they go about game design and how they market their games.
I actually have written papers about the history of particular parts of gaming. Using actual sources from books and such. Its an interesting topic to cover because it has a lot of similarities of how the Movie and TV industry started.
Oh that's cool, so if Spyro, Crash, Mario, Icarus and other classic games didn't exist, where would we be?
Aside from Spyro and Crash (I wouldn't exactly call them classic) these games came from a time where computers still had not seen use in the general public, due to perception and misconception. This is why many computer classics, like X-Wing/Tie Fighter, the Lucasarts adventure games (Sam and Max, Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Full Throttle, etc), Commander Keen, Prince of Persia, and simulators (Commanche, Falcon, MIG) often don't get the attention they deserve. (though some, like Prince of Persia and Monkey Island got reboots, while others, like Doom/Quake, C&C, and Diablo, became popular over time)
Once again, in the early days when computers were seen as tools and consoles as toys exclusively, you would have had a point. Now you don't. Besides, it amazes me that you're even fighting this battle at all, now that I know you're going into Game Design. Don't you know that the future is multi-platform? Any C++ or Java programmer with his head not stuck up his ass knows that confining yourself to one platform will very soon become a Bad Idea™.
If they're releasing another generation of consoles, I feel really bad for them... they will not be anywhere near as successful as this generation, due in large part to the proliferation of cheap, free, quality games on the PC. I suggest you look into development on either mobile devices/tablets or PCs, because other platforms are going down.
Using actual sources from books and such.
Why are you singling out books?
Back when I joined STEAM in 07, I was the only person at my school to have an account. By 2008, my best friend got an account. By 2010, my OTHER best friend got an account. By 2011-2012, At least 5-6 people got an account. Steam is an incredible thing.
The only problem I have with PC gaming right now is that any decent game that is better with a controller (racing games really) only lets me use an Xbox controller. I've got a few decent controllers, so why narrow my options and force me to buy something else?
Too bad most console gamers think that gaming PCs cost loads of dosh. I've actually have people tell me they've been given like $1,300 for a PC and were wondering if it would make for an okay gaming rig.
One guy asked me if he could play minecraft at 40 frames with 3000 $.
One guy asked me if he could play minecraft at 40 frames with 3000 $.
You could play it at 40000 frames for $3000.
PC gamers exist, we are just on the down-low.
lol we are?
You could play it at 40000 frames for $3000.
Not minecraft
Consoles got a lot of new people into gaming. As they get more interested they switch to PC.
And then you get a warped sense of reality on what a good game actually is.
I'm not sure about you (and many other people, for that matter) but for me a good game is a fun and entertaining game.
