• Kickstarter game gets shelved after almost 2 years; developer doesn't know what to do about backers

I think the answer is simple, you don't do anything. People made an investment and the project failed. No point in trying to fix things and trying to keep the backers happy, because it's the hard reality.

He should just release what he got under GPL so it's not completely wasted.
If i was to back a project it'd be kingdom come.
"Guys I can't do that thing I promised I would do thanks for the dosh though" Eat a dick
You gotta understand that a lot of people fall victim to this kind of stuff. I mean, making your own game does sound like a lot of fun, but, and especially if you're working by yourself, once you get into you'd slowly learn the horrible cycle of indie game development. The only difference with this guy is that he bit off more than he could chew. Sucks for the backers but what can you say, life's a real fucker sometimes.
It is so incredibly easy to wreck your reputation as a game developer. But reading through that, and all the phrases involving: "It wasn't my fault!" I find it hard to feel sorry for him. I think he rushed ahead with something he knew nothing about. The problem never lies with the team, it lies with the one running the show. As the person going on kickstarter, asking for money, you will be held directly responsible for the games fate. I sympathize though, despite his mistake. I can't imagine him ever earning a penny for a single one of his games now.
If you're wondering how this game managed to get the funding that it got, it's because these were the same people that made this flash game. http://www.explodingrabbit.com/games/super-mario-bros-crossover Which is really good for what it is, you can't deny that.
Precisely why I hate kickstarters.
I backed a lot of Kickstarters, none have failed me so far. It's a matter of research and faith really.

Give it to charity you cunt
And that's why my backed games are Planetary Annihilation and Clang, both of which have very experienced teams.
Pro Wrestling X
"Guys I can't do that thing I promised I would do thanks for the dosh though" Eat a dick
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what happened here. Kickstarter isn't a secure platform where everyone knows what they are doing. It's a way to kickstart a project you want to do, the public decides whether or not they want to give you money to hopefully realize this idea. You do not pay money for a product, you pay money for the potential of a product. You have no rights to get anything for kickstarting a product, backer rewards are only eligible if the project actually goes through (exceptions being backer rewards that explicitly state otherwise).
what a shitbaby if you can't handle development, don't develop and especially don't get people to pay you to develop
He didn't know that he couldn't handle development, it's really as simple as that. People voted with their money for him to do this, he thought he could do it. He learned that he couldn't do this. [editline]19th March 2014[/editline]
Give it to charity you cunt
Give what to the charity? He's had staff and been working on the game for 2 years, you think there is any money left or something? They even had to have jobs on the side just to make things go around.
Wasteland, Star Citizen, Planetary Annihilation... There are experienced teams out there, but this dude was clearly not one of them. Kickstarter has its risks, this goes on the ever growing list of lessons learned.
Theme Park Studio as well. Or basically any game that has a playable demo of sorts.
I've only backed Carmageddon Reincarnation which is made by the same people who made the original Carmageddon games and got into alpha a few days ago. So I trust them at least
Oh god did you see their kickstarter page? How did they manage to find enough gullible people to give THIS $53,509 :v:
With 50k the game should've get done in less than 6 months.
