That's the point
What do you mean "that's the point"? Was the point making Jason an unlikable douche or was it that you played as Jason? Because you can have a "common everyman goes crazy when faced with extreme circumstances" story without making the everyman an unlikable douche like Jason and pretty much all of his friends.
Jason's supposed to start off as a huge richkid douche but then transforms into a giant asshole.
But if you pick the giant asshole ending you get a knife to the chest iirc
Jason's supposed to start off as a huge richkid douche but then transforms into a giant asshole.
what an amazing character arc
Jason's supposed to start off as a huge richkid douche but then transforms into a giant asshole.
how is that any different that's a pointless arc
how is that any different that's a pointless arc
I was generalizing pretty heavily but I'll dump what I know about the plot. Basically Jason starts as a typical richkid douchebag from California. He gets along with all his douche friends and has a douche girlfriend he doesn't really have any romantic attachment to. The pirates kill his slightly-less douchey brother after they douchily went to an island that was off-limits to do douche things. Through the game Jason starts becoming less of a douche richkid but instead someone extremely adept at murder. Citra also doesn't help this by fueling this "Tribal King" fantasy of his to the point his douche friends don't really recognize him anymore. Basically Citra uses him to kill all of her enemies and at the end of the game she wants Jason to kill his douche friends and fully succumb into fully becoming this asshole Tribal Warrior-King. (Basically leave his old life behind) or you can decide this is too far and turn on Citra to escape the island with your douche friends. Jason is implied to return to civilization as a sort of freak because all the shit that happened to him changed him. Basically he can be redeemed for trying to not be an asshole anymore or be killed because he wants to live in that world of assholery.
Vyce in Tactics Ogre's entire purpose is to be a violent immature contrarian asshole. If you stick to your morals and refuse to burn down a village, he becomes an even bigger asshole who calls you a traitor and a pussy for not doing it and spends the rest of the game trying to kill you at the expense of everything else. If you decide to burn the village down, he suddenly grows a conscience despite being a bloodthirsty asshole previously and is horrified by your actions and calls you a monster and spends the rest of the game trying to kill you at the expense of everything else. If you later make a decision that would put you on his side in either route, he'll flip out and change sides just because he doesn't like you. Either way he's a tremendously pissy bitch the entire game.

I dunno if the same kind of thing happens if he goes maximum light side but it's hilarious how pathologically hipster he is.

The story would have been much more tragic if Jason was actually likable. Hell, keep his friends unlikable (but don't make them even more unlikable) to make the decision between killing and sparing them more difficult. I think Ubisoft realized that Jason was unlikable because they gave Ajay a much different personality. Unfortunately, the personality they chose for him was "plank of cardboard", but at least it made it easier to not hate him. Makes me wonder what FC5's protagonist will be like, seeing as it'll be a completely customizable character from gender on down.
