• Thief's hero redesigned to be 'more mainstream'

as long as they don't dumb down the gameplay, i'm cool with it
Does the design of a character really matter? The same thing happened with DmC, people were so fixated on the design change that they overlooked the fact that the game was actually good.
DmC probably isn't the best example to use, because nearly everyone stopped caring about how Dante looked and started caring about both how he acted and how the gameplay had a few seemingly small changes that ended up moving the game away from the old Devil May Cry games in pretty significant ways.
Yep, this game is doomed.
How about we judge the game when we actually see footage, you fucking idiots. I'm so fucking sick and tired of facepunch retards who hear or see one word or phrase that they don't like about a series and suddenly go "pack it up everyone, everything is terrible." Every single God damn time its the exact same fucking shit, from usually the exact same fucking people. If it turns out to be crap, then you were right and I'll admit it. Actually no I won't, you're still fucking retards. I'll admit the game is bad if it turns out bad, but you people who decided to judge before even seeing anything are idiots. If it turns out good, guess what? You're still idiots. I'm done. I don't even fucking care about the thief series, I'm just so tired of what seems like a trend for the majority of facepunch.
Honestly, the old Thief was also pretty "mainstream". He looked like some hooded cold blooded assassin. Not a big difference from the current artwork. I like it so far. Also devs should better choose the words that they use when they announce something, people always make stupid assumptions over a few words.
What a bunch of taffing taffers.

Nearly every time they mention these words in an interview, they're destined to flop. It's like a curse. Remember when Bioware said they wanted the CoD audience for DA2? Yeah, great game.
It's going to be dishonored v2 from what they're saying, along with the screenshots. He was never an assassin, he was a thief.
They've not actually shown Garrett killing anyone This shows him pointing a bow at someone, not actually killing them. Maybe it's a poison tipped arrow?
Iunno. The new look seems to have only given him sleeves and I guess tighter pants. I should try to play Thief again if it didn't exhaust the fuck out of my eyes.
Considering the new Thief is being pitched as a reboot, Eidos Montreal is free to reimagine the character however they see fit--even if that means toning down his magical abilities.
Huh. Didn't know that part.
Why are people suddenly complaining about his appearance when he looked that way when they first released screenies too?
Why are people suddenly complaining about his appearance when he looked that way when they first released screenies too?
'mainstream'
Why are people suddenly complaining about his appearance when he looked that way when they first released screenies too?
Someone says mainstream and people start foaming at the mouth.
as long as I can go through entire levels without being seen or having to attack anyone, I'm good.
The only thing that worries me about the Garrett in this one is whether or not he has the same voice actor.
I really like how the new garrett looks, but I have a soft spot for goth things. Anyway, I'll wait for gameplay footage before I decide whether or not the series are ruined
Why does a game called Thief have promotional media that depicts him as an assassin? Why does he have weapons, or am I missing something? (never played the series)
Why does a game called Thief have promotional media that depicts him as an assassin? Why does he have weapons or am I missing something? (never played the series)
He's always had those weapons, Thief is a game where you can play it whatever way you want. He has non lethal equipment and lethal equipment.
Why does a game called Thief have promotional media that depicts him as an assassin? Why does he have weapons, or am I missing something? (never played the series)
Article says something about Cantin's previous works included Assassin's Creed, so that might explain why. Though kind of weird how they're "toning down the goth feel" for the sake of making him look cooler. Oh well.
Wait it's a fucking reboot? What???
Wait it's a fucking reboot? What???
Yupper. Quoted that bit as most seem to be focused on the 'mainstream' part and not the 'reboot'.
Tomb Raider was a great example of a good reboot wasn't it? I haven't had the chance to play it myself
as long as they don't dumb down the gameplay, i'm cool with it
"..whilst also introducing Thief to a brand new, next-generation, audience," aka we want kids and console gamers to buy the game I'm trying not to be cynical about this but god damn it's hard when they say things like that
Going to have to rescind my last comment, this seems rather worrying. Especially the last bit of the article. I want to believe its just cosmetic changes, but I have a feeling it'll be something that involves little thieving and more shooting and stuff. Guess we'll know it when we see it.
mainstream is another word for casual
mainstream is the less damning version of casual. Kinda how "special" replaced Retarded after that became an insult but then Special became seen as one too. TIME TO MAKE UP A NEW WORD!
hey idiots remember how good DX:HR was? Wasn't it more 'mainstream' and 'open to console market'. just shut up please.

"we wanted to bring in more of the modern audience of the console market."

As soon as I saw that pic and quote together I thought of
do I have to quote myself every two pages with this? He looks exactly the same as before, with a few extra bits of straps and some eye shadow if eye shadow is enough to ruin a game for you, you got problems
I can't see how pale skin and eyeshadow makes him more mainstream. I would have thought that if they were trying that, they'd make him look more like he came out of Assassin's Creed.
Or we could wait until we know basically anything about this game before passing judgement on it. I find it funny, people were saying the exact same thing about Deus Ex: HR before that came out, and it turned out to be great.
The sad thing is, no one can 100% know how great (Or terrible) the game is until the game is really released. Videos can be edited and so on, so all people have to go on are words. "Streamlined" and "mainstreamed" are the equivalent of calling Joan of Arc a heretic in her days. I.E.: It means some serious shit could go down. Let people freak, who gives a shit. Less people bitching on release day while we enjoy the game.

Honestly he still looks like Garret. I don't mind his new look so much, but he does look far more like an assassin than a thief, which is jarring. Plus, just ditch the mask and pull the hood down a little further and I'm sure people who've played the originals will even be willing to overlook the cape.
Eeehh, I'm trying my damndest to look at this with a positive light, but the whole Focus thing sounds very... unnecessary. To quote what Bloodshot12 said in the Thief general thread, what happened to using level design to teach players how to play? I want to be able to tell if something is climbable because it looks climbable personally, not press a button and be told what I can and can't do. Having that would be fine, but I'm just afraid if it's an "optional" mode, they will go the route of assuming most players will use it anyway and neglect more natural ways of teaching. And yeah, magical abilities? He had none, he was a regular joe who just happened to be very good at sneaking, and very mediocre in everything else. He wasn't a very fast runner or a good fighter, so he had flash bombs and oil flasks to escape. All he's good at is sneaking and stealing. And the only thing that comes close to magical is his eye which is mechanical. I dunno about this. I would prefer a straight-up sequel rather than a reboot. I'll keep my eye on this and see how it turns out. I'm just happy Eidos Montreal have this, they did Deus Ex: Human Revolution very well. EDIT: Cinematic takedowns for 4+ guards yeah fuck this isn't looking good. If you ran into 4 guards in any other Thief game you were completely dicked unless you flashbombed and ran away.
