If they'd just said they wanted to 'modernise' Garrett a bit, I might almost understand and be happy about it. But they're specifically going out of their way to say 'The console market' - and that's a very slippery slope. Incredibly, just this small tidbit of information gives me massive doubts about the game... and that sucks.
Compound bows are ugly and look out of place anywhere but the hands of a modern deerhunter.
It's just a change in character but things haven't exactly gone well when developers say that.
They've already said some stuff about the gameplay changes.
- action is a viable option next to stealth if you don't actually want to play Thief: "We want you to play as a thief but we don’t want to force you to play as thief."
- Focus ability
-- highlights stuff you can interact with, including loot
-- enables slow mo for pickpocketing or fighting
-- highlights weak point on enemies
-- enables cinematic takedowns to deal with 4+ guards at once, otherwise you're only competent against smaller group sizes
Fluff-wise we've also had a few changes like way fewer supernatural elements, no signs of the steampunky weird technology and rope arrows accidentally shipped to Tomb Raider while Garrett gets a grappling hook. So overall, make it more generic and action-orientated.
Funny thing is, the original Thief games had monsters and stuff to allow for parts that are more action-orientated and created a nice change change of pace from "get the McGuffin out of this mansion". But that's gone now - along with T3's commonly cited saving grace, the cradle level that would now be way too supernatural. An action/stealth mix might have worked for Eidos Montreal when making DXHR, but Thief is a whole different beast. I love playing a good stealth game that's almost got horror aspects when you're circling around an attentive patrol guard and only a bit of cover between you two and hope your steps won't make too much noise before reaching that exit and giving you the possibility of running the hell away. Thief supported that atmosphere with a setting combining the darkness of the dark ages with cold metal of industrialization and otherworldly horrors.
The thing is, the devs are apparently aware that this is way more Dishonored's Creed than Thief, even tho pre-production was apparently hell until they understood in what direction to head. Forums discussed the new logo and a wise mod pointed out that perhaps they didn't want it to be similar because they're gonna change so much they don't want it to be judged as another Thief game. And so far, yeah it doesn't sound like much of a Thief game at all.
It really does remind me of that first conversation in the first mission I recently replayed, where guards close to you discuss the bear pits and how in the golden age they had no silly "underslung cheek spikes" and it was just hardcore bear VS bear action. I'm just disappointed that AAA games are so insanely expensive games need to appeal to an audience that's usually just plain uninterested in what people like me love. Vicious cycle, too, without good examples in genres you won't get people interested enough to buy them in the future.
Does the design of a character really matter? The same thing happened with DmC, people were so fixated on the design change that they overlooked the fact that the game was actually good.
I personally don't care about his redesign, he's always looked different in every other cutscene, but the DmC comparison is kind of iffy IMO since Dante was supposed to start out as a bratty douche and then grow up and earn his white hair. Would've been more effective if his relationship to the sidekick was fleshed out more tho.
And yeah, magical abilities? He had none, he was a regular joe who just happened to be very good at sneaking, and very mediocre in everything else. He wasn't a very fast runner or a good fighter, so he had flash bombs and oil flasks to escape. All he's good at is sneaking and stealing. And the only thing that comes close to magical is his eye which is mechanical.
To be fair, IIRC Garrett actually does have very minor magical abilities that allow him to conceal himself more easily in darkness. It was basically the lore's way of explaining why the AI in Thief can't see two feet in front of them in dim rooms that the player can see perfectly in. I guess it's neat that they acknowledge that tidbit of lore, but it doesn't make their other comments any less disheartening.
Honestly, I can already see one of the biggest problems with this game being that the developers don't actually want to make a Thief game. Thief games aren't about going from point A to B however you like, it's about stealing shit and not getting caught by guards that, while daft at actually seeing intruders, can still pile on and fuck up your scrawny ass before you can say "Taffer". I don't care if it's a reboot or not, it's called Thief, the fucking intention of the gameplay is right in the name, it's not about being someone who can do anything if they put their mind to it, it's about being a thief.
Well, let's see how things turn out. I'm a little bit worried, but that doesn't mean it's automatically going to be bad. The design is still good in my opinion.
if eye shadow is enough to ruin a game for you, you got problems
dude i woudlnt want someone to see me playing a game where a dudes wearing makeup they might think im a homo or something lol no homo
[editline]14th March 2013[/editline]
also I kinda feel like they might make it assassins creedy
- action is a viable option next to stealth if you don't actually want to play Thief: "We want you to play as a thief but we don’t want to force you to play as thief."
Is it anyone else but me who considers this completely batshit?
I'm gonna make an analogy cranked up to 11 on ridiculous here but, humor me.
It's like putting in an FPS part in a racing game because "we want you to race, but we don't want to force you to race."
If your intention from the start was not to race, why the hell would you buy a racing game?
pretty sure you could already play the original thief that way so ??
Action was in the previous thief games, it's just that it didn't end so well for the player since you had all the guards coming after you.
are you people morons
if any of you actually played the first couple Thiefs, you'll realize that garret's appearance was very barebones and simplistic. All they did was stylize it a bit to make it look cool, and to get people interested in the game. He still looks almost exactly the same, with more straps and shit to exaggerate the gothic tone.

So he just covers his body a bit more?
That's a problem?
Well that's ominous.
Still, I liked Human Revolution enough to think they'd be suited to making a Thief game.
The DX:HR team isn't making Thief, though.
Tomb Raider was a great example of a good reboot wasn't it? I haven't had the chance to play it myself
Pretty decent game, but not Tomb Raider at all.

But even the game's title is Thief! Why would you make a game called Thief when you're a robber instead of a stealthy thief, why not just go and make a game with another title if you're not being a thief in a game called "Thief".

Brand recognition.

Yeah that has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard

GARRET IS NOT A SUPERHERO god dammit, fighting 4 or even 3 guards at once should be suicide as it's always been
