I love it when somebody gets so trolled that he ends up changing his real life course because of it.
Instead of continuing this game development and becoming even richer after releasing the game, he is now going to live out of the sum he has made until now and forfeit every visible and clear opportunity that he had to become somebody respected and very rich.
I propose this story to be written down in the Guinness book under the description of "Biggest successful trolling that ever took place on planet earth"
I love it when somebody gets so trolled that he ends up changing his real life course because of it.
10bux says he'll come back and be like HEY GUYS FEZ 2 IS STILL ON IT WAS ALL A JOKE and the whole incident will be another thing to add to the pile.
He's all upset about being attacked and shit, but he has nobody to blame for it but himself.
He chose to go into the industry and act like the biggest cunt in the world. If he didn't do that, nobody would've shit on him. I simply cannot believe he doesn't realize he brought this on himself.
For "the face of gaming" he sure gave up on the industry really fast.
To be fair, he isn't mainly picked on because he's the ugly kid in class. He gets backdrafts because he tells people to choke on his dick, that huge swaths of the same media he's working in is unredeemable garbage, and that people who think counter to his opinions should kill themselves.
Sensationalist here mate.
The "CHOKE ON MY DICK" comment was a tiny thing, why it's the goto example for Fish is beyond me. A troll went at Phil, and he responded with an equally troll-ish response. It's not that big a deal.
The Japan comment was uncalled for. Although I do believe he apoligized very quickly, and also believe it was more so a personal opinion that he disliked those games currently. If I'm wrong here please correct me.
The final thing is a poor reaction to the build up of hate he gets. That reporter truly was a really huge dick, I can imagine being called the things he was hurt and Phil gets that all the time. The fact that he was referencing Futurama is somewhat worthy of note but also not really because it was dumb of Phil to say either way.
So ya there are reasons for the hate Phil gets, but I believe it mostly to be because of how he gives a reaction to all the hate. Much of the examples of his douchebaggery are poor reactions on his account to assholes.
I was reading his tweets the other day and I could tell there was something up - I didn't like his game, and I'm not going to say he was a misunderstood genius or something but honestly I think the industry's lost someone here. The guy was misunderstood (as evidenced by the scores of people here just quoting obvious comments made in jest by him and getting all riled up about it), he was foul mouthed, he didn't shut up for anyone, and he took his sweet time making anything. But the thing is, he callled a lot of bullshit out in the gaming industry, he always spoke his mind, he had a sense of humour (albeit one that people didn't get a lot of the time), he hated and wanted to challlenge the status quo, and he shook up a lot of complacent people, even if it was the wrong way.
I think that he was a much better guy than you guys give him credit for, and I'll go on record here saying that I saw a little bit of myself in him - good and bad.
This is my opinion - you might disagree with it but respect it for what it is :)
This is pretty much the truth.
Phil Fish wasn't some sort of flat-out asshole who acted like a jerk for the sake of being a jerk. And he wasn't a victim either. He brought this upon himself.
But he's not a total twat. I can't believe all of you are saying Fez was some sort of game that did absolutely nothing special. It was a charming game with a good art style that the gaming press loved. It didn't sell so well so well for nothing. A combination of Fish taking some criticism too seriously, Fish being very egotistical, and Fish poorly using sarcasm at times led to his downfall.

The first one is a go-to example because it's a quick way to summarize the Fish situation. What other game developer has publicly told someone to suck him off? Oh yeah, John Romero. Daikatana-era John Romero.
The second one is actually a threefer. Fish has done this for Japanese games, PC games, and games on Nintendo products. Although, as of today, it may just be shortened to "games".
And the third one... well, is basically a trial-by-fire that most distinguished people in media-driven fields go through. But Fish just can't handle it at all, and that's bad for everyone in every direction. Other people have even longer histories of shit being consistently thrown at them (obligatory Molyneux reference), but Fish sets up his own negative feedback loop by actively fueling the fire. People are even trying to defend him by saying that he likes the shit, for god's sake.
Any way you cut it, it probably is a good idea for him to step out of the gaming scene for a little bit. Especially if you're sympathetic to his plight; because that gives him an opportunity to calm down, self-reflect, and focus on getting help in ways that would really benefit him.
I'm still giggling at how Fish started a company despite producing only one game.
if you want to get a team together to create a game you need to
get a team
together
to
??????????????? ? / ? ??
that team with a name is called a company. usually for business purposes so you can pay the members of your team.
What, he's surprised that people wanted to give him shit? What a moron.
Was it so hard to keep your big mouth shut, Phil?
He'll come back once he runs out of money and re-announce Fez 2.
Good riddance I say, the industry has enough stupidity, we don't need a manchild that flies off the handle and stirs drama constantly.
The internet is like a hornet's nest, and Phil just couldn't stop whacking it with a stick, and now he has the audacity to act hurt that everyone has shat on him once again?

You know, I actually enjoyed Fez... But one Fez is enough. If you wore multiple Fezes, people would just think you were weird. Or some bizarre Shriner.
Either way, who is Phil Fish and why does he matter? And, more importantly, why does he feel the need to act like a child on the world stage?
Kill Phil: Volume 2(?)
I must be the only one who didn't think Fez was total trash.
I liked it more as a puzzle-platformer, not a platformer.
[sp]I know a lot of you have been saying that nothing's innovative about this game, but I've never seen any other game with that 3d rotation mechanic[/sp]
I mean the developer is kind of a dick, and I didn't know it until after I played it. Must be why I liked the game.

Wasnt there a mario game like that a couple years ago?

Nothing comes to mind. Maybe you're thinking of 3D World?

Funny thing, Fezes means literally faeces in portuguese:

Just to clarify, the "your games are shit" comment was in the context of modern Japanese games. Fish was brash, but meant no ill against Goto, the Japanese developer who asked the question. Phil and Goto touched base with each other later on over Twitter — Phil outright apologized, there was no bad blood between them whatsoever. Hell, Goto thanked him. Even Keiji Inafune spoke about it, he thought it was a good thing as well!
Inafune: There was a Canadian guy who appeared in a documentary film and did a Q&A afterwards. And a Japanese person asked what he thought of Japanese games, and he said he thought they sucked. That’s what’s necessary.
It’s very severe, but very honest. Unless Japanese people feel embarrassed from the experience of getting harsh comments, saying [new games] could have been better is not an opinion they would take seriously. When they’re embarrassed and they feel obliged to change, it would make a difference.
(SOURCE: http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2012/04/keiji-inafune-qa/ )
But a happy ending is no fun at all, so everyone latches onto the first impression. Mountain out of a molehill.

Do you really care about the "PCs are for spreadsheets" comment? It's laughable, it's a total joke, move on.
As for games on Nintendo products: ?????? Are you talking about when Nintendo finally opened up for indie developers? I can't think of anything else, could you clarify?
This makes me wanna giggle lol
Wasnt there a mario game like that a couple years ago?
That game was Super Paper mario, and you could shift perspective back and forth from a traditional sidescroller view to a more head-on position.
He accepted power, but not responsibility.
He decided to become public figure, but didn't take simple manners into account.
He tried to prove to a brick wall that sky is purple, his cause was doomed from the start, because he wasn't ready to face public, he refuses to listen to people that he actually should listen to: people with criticism, he refused to learn to pick his words carefully, because gaming journalist are listening to him and will report every stupid thing he says, on small scale(discussion with friend), it would be a minor mistake, but not on Internet arena.
He did right thing by quitting, but he's done it poorly, as everything public he does.
He either should have stayed out of public, or learn to deal with people, both things he didn't.
i personally don't care or have anything to say about his game, his altitude, him as a person, but as public figure, he failed horribly and quitting was only thing he should've done.
Though he won't learn from his mistakes and will probably return 4 months later, promising more debacles as he struggles with tongue, bloated ego, trolls, and provocative journalists.
It's his mistake only, and he wouldn't learn from it, blaming everyone but himself because he's delusional.

I didn't even get that mask reference until now.
(For anyone who has not played Hotline Miami, there are a bunch of different animal masks you can choose to give you different effects (e.g. Tony the Tiger, 1 hit kills) . This mask is a Fish, it translates the game to french. It's name is Phil.)

I think a couple of older 80s/90s games had the rotation mechanic.

Super Paper Mario had a mechanic that was similar:
