I hope they make a Retina display by itself.
I'd buy a 25 inch 4k monitor any time for 30928540923 dollars

I'm pretty sure a 27" ACD with retina is in the works, same with 21.5" and 27" iMacs.
I wonder if Safari in Mountain Lion will support the new srcset attribute, it'd make a good demonstrator.
You can turn off HiDPI mode and quadruple your screen real estate. Or you could run at (upscaled) resolutions of "1920 by 1200, 1680 by 1050, 1280 by 800, and 1024 by 640 pixels"
You could turn off the density scaling, but in practice you probably wouldn't want to, it'd be text so small as to be unreadable.
this is one of the first apple products to be near appropriate price
if that screen was made separate and bigger it would probably cost $1,600 at least
one pixel on your current monitor becomes 4 pixels on a retina display.
Guess what, 1 pixel on 800x600 on 15' is 2 pixel on 1600x1200 on 15'.
Retina is no different than regular LCD. It is just name made up by Apple to boost sales.

Just because 4 pixels is fit on "1" doesn't make it any special does it

Nope

It says "Retina display is a trademark used by Apple for displays with pixel density so high, the eye would not be able to notice pixelation."
That's what I'm saying.
Jesus shit that battery is going to burn faster than hydrogen.
who buys this crap?
HURR BECAUSE EVERY MANUFACTURER MAKES 2880x1800 SCREENS RIGHT?
THEY'RE LIKE A READILY AVAILABLE THING THAT EVERYONE DOES AT LOW COSTS RIGHT?
Uuhhh..
My point is no one makes screens of this resolution AT ANY COST.

You should see the previous generation of Macbook Pros. $2000 for an i7 and a 5870, where my ASUS laptop of same same specs (RIP Dudetop) cost half that amount.
who buys this crap?
people with money
is that a surprise for you?

Yes, it's Apple's trademark that they use to describe screens with bazillion pixels.
So?
[editline]12th June 2012[/editline]
Also, with screens like this, I wonder if soon enough anti-aliasing will not be needed anymore?

I hope so. Gone would be the days of me playing a game without anti-aliasing and getting a horrific migrane.
Usually I'm "meh" about Apple products, but the screen sounds lovely. Hopefully other manufacturers will learn from them.

Yeah, but the problem is that GPU requirements shoot up as well. Going from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 doubles the density, but quadruples the amount of pixels.
Edit: You're likely to see games do what ARMA 2 can do, render the UI at one resolution and the game contents at another (So UI at 3840x2160 and the game at 1920x1080)
While the screen sounds pretty damn sexy, I can't really see the use for it.
With all these these high resolution monitors, Apple devices are actually starting to have somewhat more justified prices. It's even a 16:10 ratio, which should be standard in PC monitors IMO.
That being said, I'd never spend over 1000€ on a laptop, I don't exactly have loads of money laying around. It's nice to see higher resolution screens appearing though.
I hope everyone does their "lets copy Apple" thing with the high res screens
Microsoft has already revealed that Windows 8 will support 250PPI+ (this is ~220) screens, and as such, it's more of a "Apple got there first" than a copy. If the OS isn't up to it, the hardware matters buttocks. Apple updates their OS much more often than Microsoft, and back 2009 nobody was using resolutions of this kind. Phones were just starting to use these kinds of densities, and at that point it wouldn't really make sense for Microsoft to puch that kind of density on laptops, cause the option wasn't really there yet. Meanwhile, Apple is releasing their OS on a yearly basis, and they can therefore asses the market more oftently. PC manufacturers would have to wait on Microsoft, where Apple can just do the changes themselves. We'll probably see these densities pick up after Windows 8 is released.
Still, it's very nice of Apple to start pushing this.
sure this stuff might be overpriced but damn, apple make some good stuff when they're not suing other companies & patenting everything on the planet.
nah, everything they make is shit, you're just falling for their flashy gimmicks.

Are you fucking serious?
This laptop, for example, is anything but shit.
Yes, it's expensive, but it's fucking awesome.
For the price you can ALWAYS, ALWAYS, buy something better whether it be a Zune or a i7 laptop.
This is not a matter of opinion.

That's what puts me of the most of Apple products, the Price is fucking outrageous, and some other Company will release something as nice in a few months.
If someone has 5000 euro and wants to buy a laptop that guy would more likely buy a Macbook then a other notebook.
But if you currently got 900 euro and you can get something that has sorta the same specs as the Macbook then you obviously would go for that instead of the Macboo

Or buy a regular laptop with the same specs and donate the 3000 euros to doctors without borders and save an entire african village!

Did you know Apple has a 25% profit margin?

I don't think a lot of people would give their money away after working for it the whole summer holiday

tell me where i can buy a laptop with a screen better than that

or you could buy nothing and donate everything to doctors without whatever
etc
Don't worry about the screen, it seems like some time in the future sharp are gonna be coming out with even higher resolution ones:
