I haven't spend much time in DmC so from my relatively neutral viewpoint it seems the DmC fans are just pissed because of what they did with Dante's character. The gameplay itselfs seems to be good, which is why it fairly high ratings from the press. The humour isn't for everyone but from what I've seen, the earlier DmCs are just as corny.
I'm pissed off with Dante's character because he's not only one of the most unlikeable characters in the game, but his new characterisation is a serious factor in why the story is so terrible in spite of NT's ridiculous claims that their narrative would elevate games to some greater artistic merit. He constantly states that he doesn't give a shit about the resistance movement he's been roped into, his long lost brother Vergil, or their half-angel half-demon heritage, yet goes along with it anyway. Dante's apathy and antisocial tendencies are utterly at odds with how the beginning of the story carries on, and he stays like that right up until the very last minute. Later in the story, he boasts about [sp]his brother aborting the main villain's unborn child with an assault rifle just to get a rise out of him. Yet another example of Ninja Theory attempting to make him come off as an edgy badass when it makes him look like a cunt.[/sp] And at the very end of the game Dante [sp]starts a crap boss fight with his brother Vergil for suggesting that they should establish some sort of authority to protect the human race from the newly revealed demons. All because he believes that Vergil will end up replacing the villain they just killed despite the two characters being completely different. It's probably worth mentioning that they themselves revealed these demons to humanity so as to expose them to the soul farming/world domination scheme they've been caught up in, but all they've done is cause widespread destruction from Limbo crashing into the real world, while the average demon is all but unbeatable without Dante's or Vergil's weaponry or Nephilim-granted strength and agility. And those demons are all over the world now.[/sp] [sp]The best part is that immediately after Dante decides to spare his brother at the cries of his newfound love interest (with whom Dante has exactly no chemistry other than him saving her from the main villain and standing up for her when Vergil starts patronising humans), he turns around and says "this world is under my protection now". Which is exactly what Vergil said, with even less commitment or planning behind it.[/sp] [sp]Then Vergil cuts a hole in reality and storms off through it, presumably because he can't stand to be around this hypocritical douchebag he once called a brother any longer.[/sp] You can go looking for the rest of the puerile (i.e. 'Shakesperian') banter in the game, but those are the most important parts of the narrative NT has been playing up all this time.
Now I wonder why they decided to hand over the development of the game to them in the first place.
Capcom are reworking all their franchises into what they think will sell in the west, hence handing over development of some games to western devs. Part of that involved handing over the Devil May Cry franchise to Ninja Theory. For reference, Capcom also decided that Lost Planet 3 was better off in the capable hands of Spark Unlimited, who brought us such masterpieces as 'Legendary' and 'Turning Point: Fall of Liberty'.

Loved Lost Planet's Metal Slug-ish in 3D arcade no nonsense tons of baddies and huge ass boss fights mecha action and beautiful landscapes. Lost Planet 2 even more due to co-op and larger scale plus variety of environments (though personally loved snow still the best) despite the sacrifice of plot. Lost Planet 3 has some neat ideas but judging from recent gameplay it really just looks like a Gears of War clone so far with the only thing catching my eye for hope is the giant mecha you drive around.
