Doom 4 was not 'exciting' enough, sent back to the drawing board

Regarding Rage: it was not a bad game, but it felt a little bit unpolished.
I stopped playing RAGE because the Flickering Light bug made the game physically painful for me to play.
That game should not have gone out the door in its release state. The fact it had been in development as long as it had and yet it was as poorly optimized as it was is laughable.
I'm hoping they're going to take their good time with Doom 4.
It'd be nice if it really did manage to get off the CoD gravy train.
This better not end up like RAGE.
Or Brink.

Brink licensed the Id Tech 4 engine (and was the last game to do so) and wasn't made by Id.

id weren't involved in Brink's development, the only connection between them is that it used a modified id Tech 4.
I just want to see a game that plays as fast as Doom 2, I havent seen anything like it for so many years

I have some faith in them if they're willing to throw away everything they have right now. Though I'm interested in what they have right now if it really warrants that. I'd like something as open as the original Dooms were, I don't see many games that use that kind of open stage idea.
Just make a new Quake game that's like the original Quake game.
So much this.
I miss games like Quake and UT.
I'm actually hoping Doom 4 does well not only because I want a new doom, but because Carmack mentioned a Quake 5 that would be like Quake 1, which I would fucking kill for.
If you want a modern-classic FPS, wait for the Rise of the Triad remake, it's pretty much exactly that, modern graphics and all that with old school FPS gameplay with fast movement and shooting everywhere.
Hope its very classical doom style
as much as I want to play classic doom the controls and graphics make it pretty hard.
in all honesty the original Doom games never really felt that great to me, at least not so much that i'd want a straight remake in 3D - i always found that it didn't feel very meaty, never really felt like i was doing much when i played it. i had the same problem with a lot of iD games where it just didn't feel very good to play, in spite of the fast pace and stuff like that.
obviously to each their own, but i think just making a totally old-school shooter would hinder Doom 4's potential. it could be a lot more than old-fashioned, if you know what i mean.

Graphics are fine you can go into opengl mode in GZDoom or Zandronum, controls are exactly like a modern FPS if you aren't playing vanilla Dosbox doom. Even chocolate doom (which is vanilla doom but with compatibility for modern windows so you dont have to use dosbox) has key binds.
I am surprised you didn't know about these things if you are interested in playing classic doom again, there are a shit ton of source ports all for different functions and preferences.

obviously, but making it 2 weapons max with shitty guns and all that would shit on it. or repeating what D3 did.
give far more open areas than doom 3, better guns and faster action is all I want. D3's issue is it REALLY tries to be scary when it just doesn't work and it doesn't scare anyone, and Doom 1 and 2 weren't about being scary.

I'm talking pure mouse look up/down/etc. I'll have to look into it but the main reason is because I've got many other games I need to beat.
I have steam version

I don't know what you are talking about, Doom's combat feels really meaty to me. Especially the Super Shotgun. It never gets old. And if you want even more meaty combat try playing Brutal Doom or installing a mod that makes the weapons louder or something.

Actually Doom 1 and 2 were pretty scary when they first came out because nobody had really played a game like that before. I know it sounds ridiculous but it was freaky sometimes. Doom 64 is also pretty freaky to this day because of the removal of music for a more sinister ambient soundtrack. ID tried to go back to that scary feeling people got from Doom I all those years ago but by then people considered doom an action game.
Here's a idea ID Software.
Take the Doom 1 Gameplay
And put modern AAA Asthetics on it and make the game non serious.
Not to mention that it should be abundant in gore, satanism and demons. Enough to make it controversial again.

Fair
Considering how much its considered an action game at this point you might as well keep it that way. Doom 3 was really shit as being scary after all.

Download GZDoom, install it to any destination you see fit
Go to your doom steam folder, extract your DOOM.wad or DOOM2.WAD
put them into the GZDoom folder, or keep them in your steam folder and just use ZDL as a launcher for any wad, sourceport and IWAD then you can just locate your iwad destination using that.
Start up GZDoom, enable opengl mode in options if you want better graphics, bind your keys to wasd, see if you want classic hud or trasparent hud etc etc, check shader options if you want. Go to mouse look options and always enable mouselook, go to player options and always enable sprint, and disable autoaim (basically autoaim is the classic doom function of finding monsters vertically when they are above you and aiming for you), also you can add crosshairs if you want but I tend to keep them off.
Done.

Aye; if Quake V has the same Lovecraftian aesthetic as Quake 1, that would be pretty gnarly.

Yeah I really like that atmosphere, it feels original from most other FPS games. Nobody has really tried copying it.

I want to be able to hear the collective screams of soccer moms and fundamental Christian pastors on the day of release. When conservative Fox News journalists blame today's society's problems on video games, Doom 4 should be the main recipient of that blame. The video game that will finally give Jack Thompson a heart attack.

It will be like days of old when Doom and Mortal Kombat created the ESRB.
Wrack is pretty much an Doom-style shooter, complete with Doom's composer and running at thirty miles an hour. It also needs more attention, go have a look at it.

Woah I need to see this

Just looked at some gameplay footage...it looks terrible from what I have seen. That sucks.

I've played the alpha, it's really not. Needs a lot of adjustment and tweaking, but it's not nearly done yet.
To be honest, all I want is more Quake. A Quake 1-2 and a Quake 4-2 would be amazing. I actually really enjoyed 4, certainly as much as all the other Quakes I've played. I think the one I've played least has to be Quake Live, but I've spent too many hours in 3 anyway.

Let's hope they can actually recreate the atmosphere instead of having it bastardized by modernization.
