• Days after LawBreakers shut down, CliffyB's studio reveals a Battle Royale game

The sad thing about Lawbreakers was the game was actually really, really fun, it just lacked marketing and everything just looked bland which turned a lot of people off. This is literally just jumping on the bandwagon too late, I guess they're trying to recover the losses they made from Lawbreakers
Wow, just when you thought the hype's already at it's peak and most people are already playing PUBG or Fortnite, Cliffy B just throws another BR-Style game in the ring. Does he really expect this to turn in some decent profit?
The worst thing is how they call this a "passion project" that they have worked on for the past five months. I guess their passion is following the latest trend and churning out uninspired garbage?
What year did command and conquer renegade come out? Because that was also a class based shooter.
i too have a passion to be a greedy hack
Borrow ideas by all means, it is very common. But there is a difference between a "me too" product and something that takes inspiration from something else and builds upon it. Overwatch is still distinct from Team Fortress 2 both visually and mechanically in a lot of ways, same way Vermintide borrows heavily from Left 4 Dead but still manages to be its own thing. If we can't take inspiration from the things around us then the FPS genre should have stopped with the original Wolfenstein. (Though if I remember correctly there are a few even older titles that would classify as FPS)
tbh if I had one last chance at redemption in the vidya gaymes industry I'd try to shit whatever came out my ass too
I would think people would be too entrenched in either fortnite or pugb to switch to another BR game, but who knows maybe this will get some attention.
I'd be pretty passionate about trying not to go bankrupt after making an infamous trainwreck of multiplayer shooter.
Where exactly is the line between a "me too" product and "taking inspiration"? That seems to be an entirely subjective thing based on your personal opinion of the game and its developers.
Radical "Quick, Our Funds Are Dry, Jump On The Nearest Bandwagon" Heights
Fair enough, but to me it is much clearer that for example Blizzard still tried to do their own thing in a tangible way compared to a straight up clone.
Well by your apparent definition of "rip off" every class based shooter is a rip off of Tribes because that came out in 1998 and was therefore the de facto first one. Team Fortress Classic is therefore a rip off of Tribes, which makes TF2 also a rip off of Tribes, therefore, Overwatch is actually a rip off of Tribes. Also there is like, two older titles that would classify as FPS titles, but like, one of them was actually technically a maze game with a projectile "attack" and the other is a dungeon crawl. Technically if you want to get down to it. Any of the first person DnD type games from the 80's on the NES and such were also FPS titles if they features magic or anything that wasn't strictly melee combat.
Overwatch took much more from TF2 than just the classes mechanic. Both LawBreakers and this battle royale game also seem to be distinct enough from PUBG and Fortnite to me. The problem is that these games are not good, not that they're copying other peoples' ideas
Well, to be fair, there's a good example in this exact genre - fortnite came out after pubg and is/was quite similar apart from the building gimmick, and it rather quickly surpassed it in playerbase simply by being the same thing but better. That said, I highly doubt the schlock in OP will find even remotely the same success.
Yeah and team fortress took a lot more than just classes from Tribes. They're still distinct enough games, I may personally not like both of them, but that doesn't change that they're both different enough to be distinct titles.
I've always loved the overall neon-punk aesthetic and hope to see its influence continue, but I'm absolutely sick of the wave of lazy cheeky 80's barf since it got super popular in the wake of kung fury
I've only played two rounds but holy batman it is bad. It somehow runs worse than PUBG for me. Not "fair" to judge it so soon but there really isn't anything new other than the endless amounts of cash registers, vending machines, and prizes littered all over the place. Either way, I can't see this lasting any longer than Lawbreakers.
There's nothing wrong with making another game in a popular genre, as long as you can make it stand out. The problem here is that Cliffy B's one unique contribution to the battle royale genre is a credit system that seems intentionally designed to go hand in hand with p2w microtransactions. That's literally all it has going for it, other than an obnoxious art style. There's really no reason to play this when there's already multiple competent, popular entries in the genre, unless you're one of those douchebags who only plays games where they can win every time because they have access to mommy and daddy's credit card.
this game makes my gpu run at radical heats
It ran just fine for me but the game just isn't pretty to look at. It's like they know the art style they want, but can't figure out how to make it look not trash. Also, I appreciate the dev textures on some of the maps. I gave it 10 minutes and uninstalled. Battle royale games just aren't my thing.
Downloaded it out of morbid curiosity. The friend system doesn't work. The game gets stuck in loading. The main menu has the character T-posing before snapping into a static position. This is even worse than I thought.
Apparently it runs like trash. How does a game that legitimately looks this bad, and uses tricks to make the game look alright while being lower end, and still run poorly. The fuck
Wow, an overused type of gameplay and an overused aesthetic. I've already forgotten what game I'm talking about. Plus an "It's free, so quit complaining." excuse just as it's coming out. Literally everything about this is unappealing.
Funny to use "It's free" as a defence when you spent most of the last game's marketing cycle shitting of free-to-play games. A lot like shitting on PC for piracy and then expecting your first PC game in a decade to do well on PC.
No, OP's title is shit.
I feel mighty depressed about this. The trailer is lifeless to the point of looking like something a parody YouTube account would make. I played Law Breakers for like 20+ hours on the beta weekend. I really loved that game. If they had gone free to play within the first couple months, it might actually have a thriving community right now. As it stands, who in their right mind would pay thirty whole dollars for a multiplayer game with less than a dozen players online at any given time? For crying out loud it's only gone to $15 like once and even that is pushing it. The arrogance and the disdain for the actual buyers is palpable and disgusting. So they're literally just letting 3 years of hard work go down the shitter cause they refuse to go f2p while they slap together a shit looking battle royale and have the cajones to call it a passion project? Only because of Cliffy B's enthusiasm on arena shooters am I inclined to give any slack on this, otherwise this just comes across as a blatant piss take.
Well, this is depressing. I as some of you know loved Lawbreakers, but wished Cliffy had nothing to do with it. Now, they've gone for a BR game? I don't mind jumping on popular fads, but I genuinely dislike BR games, especially those who look lazily done.. like this one. It really feel somewhat like a stab in the back for how much I did for the community and the game.(lawbreakers) Sigh.
