• Bethesda possibly hints at Doom 2 for E3

I mean, DOOM went through so many iterations and the one we got took around 2 years to make. I don't think it's impossible for a sequel to release this year or next as it's been 2 years since the last game came out.
Yeah at this point i'd rather have a more sustainable longevity for the game than keeping Carmack's experimental tech ideas around and bloating the product as a result. I don't go to Doom for eye-candy, especially one that is barely noticeable.
I'd say that not only can they sometimes be barely noticeable, but in RAGE they were almost TOO noticeable. The whole megatextures thing looked ok at a distance in the environment textures but up close all the other textures looked extra shit and blurry. As a result of how big the difference was between the rather nice environment stuff and the non proprietary super-special-iD-mega-uberTexture™ everything that wasn't one of those looked even worse than it needed to up close. I think it's pretty unnecessary tech that just adds problems if I'm honest, I've never seen an advantage over any other game that doesn't use it, nothing has really looked better, it even seems to increase texture streaming and popping issues in larger outdoor areas. Try turning around quickly in RAGE in a busy area and it's like you are playing an Unreal 3 game for a sec.
I can't wait for the next time they reboot it and we have three games all named DOOM. Also, about Doom 2016 being a sequel, I've heard that the events of Doom keep happening in the same timeline over vast periods of time, sort of like that theory of the fate of the universe that basically states it will eventually collapse on itself, starting another big bang, expanding, etc. So in the DOOM universe, every time this happens humanity evolves, they make a base on Mars or one of its moons, they discover the previous iteration's sealed up portal to Hell and they reopen it for one dumb reason or another. In each one of these iterations the Doom guy appears in some form or another and is the only one capable of beating the living hell out of some demons and knocking them back to where they came from, so he's basically stuck in an endless loop of ripping and tearing whether he knows it or not. This actually makes a good bit of sense because in Doom 3 there are tablets that seem to reference another Doom Guy and they sort of show the chronology of the first Doom. I've yet to play Doom 2016 thanks to this stupid fucking policy of PC developers these days requiring everyone to download these massive games even if you buy a physical copy, but I'm pretty sure there are similar tablets and inscriptions that make reference to another Doom Guy. Alternatively, it could take place in a different reality with each new reboot, where the Doom Guy, the UAC and a Mars base is a constant between realities. In each one Doom Guy finds his way onto Mars to close the portal to Hell. But this doesn't really explain why there are references to previous Doom games in each reboot if they take place in different realities. That actually really sucks considering how great Doom 3's map editor was.
Two points: idtech definitely seems to be aiming for bleeding-edge systems. I played Rage on either a 650 or a 6870, and while it was perfectly playable, the texture pop was definitely noticeable. I played DOOM on a 1080 Ti, and literally the only time I saw texture swapping was in the special model views (the ones you get for collecting Doomguys). I ought to give Rage a run on the new machine and see whether it's true, but I expect it will have basically no texture swapping visible. This has been true of id games since early on - it was a bit before my time, but apparently people kvetched about DooM ]['s system requirements. Their games can be played fine on weaker systems but they require a very high-end one for perfection. As I understand it, megatexture technology actually plays a pretty big part in DOOM's shadowing and reflections. They don't do the huge 65536x65536 terrain textures, but they still take advantage of the tech.
IIRC the Wolfenstein II version of id Tech 6 dropped megatextures, which if correct I'd imagine that change would carry over DOOM 5 (whether the engine for that game is a further-developed id Tech 6 or the id Tech 7 debut title or whatever).
wait what? i am back in 1994 again?
I didn't think they had to confirm a new doom considering nu-Doom ends with a sequel hook. I know they're probably going to set it on Earth but setting it beyond the asteroid belt would be a lot cooler
All I know is that i'm fine if the core gameplay is the same as the previous one, but there needs to be better level/combat design than arenas that spit out the same possessed/imps as filler alongside the bigger foes all the time. When everything is about non-stop movement, more imps doesn't make fights harder, just longer. If they were to go full Devil May Cry with a gun focus, though, then i'm not sure what to think. Meanwhile, if we're going Earth, the story already set up that humanity was in a severe energy crisis, so the place is probably gonna be real shitty, and if everything runs on Argent Energy then the Demons could probably transform the landscape and structures into their own abstract little piece of Hell on Earth and so forth. Go sci-fi Legendary, turn the world into a brutal and violent adventure across the globe mixed with surreal sights and abnormalities. Rather than just fighting your way through generic modern cities that look like they may be from RAGE, ala the cancelled Doom 4.
While I really liked Doom, I'd love it if Quake got the same treatment next
Quake 2 has a special place in my heart and childhood, and I'd absolutely love a continuation of the concept of Stroggos. Preferably something more than Quake 4, on the idTech 4 engine, which I always personally felt was an ugly-as-fuck engine. Even when Doom 3 and Quake 4 first came out, I thought they were ugly games. But idTech 6, showcased with Doom 2016, could do the military-industrial aesthetic of Stroggos such beautiful wonder. I would absolutely love it.
Guys. We all know it'll be called D I I M
If Ubisoft can make Far Cry Arcade as good as it is, they can make Snapmap not total shit.
they should announce doom 5 instead
Speak for yourself the multiplayer was plenty fun, I still play it regularly.
I'm more curious how they'd handle a game like the first Quake. We need more otherworldly weirdness and yog-sothery in our first person shooters.
call it doom 2018 and wait for future generations to try finding the missing 2015 games between the original and it.
Just call it Doom II: Hell on Earth just to fuck with the purists.
Honestly, I don't know if "Quake" has any sort of cohesive identity as a series. Quake 3 is sort of the most well-known, but Quake 1, 2, 3 and 4 are basically different games. Q1 was basically 3D Doom, from a gameplay perspective, with some time-travelly eldritch-horror story that would have worked a lot better if the different eras had looked remotely different. Q2 was sort of the archetypal fast-paced singleplayer FPS. Less emphasis on keycards and secrets, more emphasis on accuracy and reflexes. The story was now strict sci-fi mil-fi. Q3 went all-in on the multiplayer, and was THE lightning-paced twitch arena shooter. It kept the sci-fi skin, kind of, but no plot. I think everyone has forgotten Q4 happened, which is convenient because I've never played it. What would a Quake 5 be like? It depends too much on which Quake you think is "the" Quake. While Doom had a lot of different interpretations on the core ideas of a hell invasion, heavy metal and a cybernetic demon aesthetic, Quake has no unifying narrative, aesthetic OR gameplay themes. That said, I would not say no to a Quake reboot that was basically Bloodborne as an FPS. Eldritch horror is kind of played out in other genres but hasn't really been done in shooters much, and you could retroactively declare the unifying gameplay theme of Quake as "punishing difficulty" and most people would go with it.
They should just call it DOOOOM
One of my biggest hopes is that we get to see this guy be a legit badass and fuck shit up: https://doomwiki.org/w/images/thumb/d/d9/Samuel_hayden_doom_2016.jpg/300px-Samuel_hayden_doom_2016.jpg
Although chances are you'll be the one fucking his shit up
I don't know. Hayden was pretty reasonable. Doom Guy was a rampaging manic with no signs of slowing down or following orders, someone as calculating as Hayden would likely seal him off somewhere he couldn't ruin everything as soon as everything started cooling down. Plus he did show mercy and made sure Doom Guy wouldn't be harmed.
where in the fuck is my quake V?
IIRC beth was hiering VO people for a 'cutting edge RPG' a year or two ago, so my moneys on a new elderscrolls game. Skyrim 2 here we come
Even so, it's probably another four or five years out by Todd's own estimates. Supposedly it might be for a new IP.
