The new Samsung Galaxy phone can't connect to the internet.

straight talk offers as low as 30 dollars a month if youre not using data. if you cant afford that you have no need for a smartphone regardless.
I didn't get my first Cellphone until I was 26 (last year) I was never bullied over it.
this conversation is happening because i can't cover every possible base when pointing something out. that other dude misread the thread, i got caught up in you assuming i don't understand the dangers of technology while telling him about it, just because i didn't think it was necessary to explicitly outline all of the "pros and cons" of modern tech usage while making a simple observation, lol
Why is everyone being such a toighty ass about my comment? There's value in not pawning your child off to a device until they're like 12 or something.
Do you actually think that kids still call and text
It's 10 euros a month here in Portugal...
I got my ZTE Zmax pro for $139 on amazon. It comes with:
Display. 6.00-inch.
Processor. 1.5GHz octa-core.
Front Camera. 5-megapixel.
Resolution. 1080x1920 pixels.
RAM. 2GB.
OS. Android 6.0.
Storage. 32GB.
Rear Camera. 13-megapixel.
And a 3,400mAh battery. With full band 12 LTE.
Meanwhile, this shitty new Samsung phone comes with:
8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras
5-inch qHD AMOLED display
1.4GHz quad-core processor
1.5GB of RAM
2,600mAh removable battery
For $185. With no LTE. With no 3G. With no wifi.
I mean come on if you're going to make a phone like this cut the ram down to 768MB, shove a larger camera on it, change the CPU to something less powerful, get a better battery and take the cost down to $75-$100. And this qHD display better be 720p because this phone does not need 1080p without a web browser IMO.
Its not
She hasnt
Luckily, Samsung just came out with a phone like what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure I read about it somewhere.
Man and I thought Apple was leading in smartphone stupidity
qHD is 960x540 iirc
QHD is 2560x1440
I think that's no better than just giving them one considering kids yearn to be equal or better, at least many from my neighborhood did.
Call it too specific a situation but if your kid is the only one in a class with a smartphone that doesn't have internet while the rest do, they're just might start yearning to have one that does have internet because they'll probably feel that it isn't fair they have to be without internet while the other kids do. Especially if you're already paying for the services from the company to make calls and texts anyways. Why even have a smartphone if it won't have internet?
You can do calculations and manage your dates on a normal flip phone or even some crummy pda that doesn't cost nearly as much. Or even just an actual calculator and a friggin calendar. I don't see any other reason to have a smartphone that can't connect to the internet otherwise.
That and I used my phone to look up a lot of stuff when I wasn't at my computer, and didn't have a computer, to assist me with research or just to expand my vocabulary. If you don't want your kid to get addicted to the internet on their phone then I understand but I deffo don't agree with it nonetheless. Ain't there parental control apps for phones out there anyway?
Hell every single plan here has unlimited calls and text, the only thing you're paying in tiers for these days is mobile data.
I remember them just fine, could probably still type out a text but if that's the only reason this phone exists it's stupid.
Joke's on you Samsung, the going rate for Data is so high I never use the internet on mine anyway!
Why do people seem to think there's zero difference between making your kid a pariah and getting them something like this/no phone at all, and turning them into slaves to technology by buying one?
That's what the whole "parenting" thing is supposed to be for.
Because it seems like a thoughtless thing to do with negative consequences.
It's fairly obvious it's going to have negative social impact when they don't have the device that all of their friends do. A device that is the norm for pretty much everyone in this day and age.
For what value exactly? How are they going to learn self control in using devices when they don't have such devices in the first place?
You could get more value with flip phones even for this phone's target consumers
Its a good way to give your child, or grandma, a means to communicate but also not give them a device to distract them constantly at every waking moment. Facebook can wait till she gets home from school.
I now work in a company that has customers that are mostly blue-collar workers. Almost all of these guys use old school phones with texting in the field because the phones themselves are nearly indestructable, while keeping their personal phones all 'fancy with touchscreen and shit' (literally their words ).
Did an onsite at one of the facilities that makes interior parts for cars - they use flip phones when walking around because the WiFi is shit on their massive factory floor, so it's cheaper to just make regular calls and text. Not to mention the environment was ridiculously harsh - fucking boiling in my skin and I smelled like burnt plastic for days after the visit. I can kinda see why using a brickphone in those environment makes sense, you could probably buy a sixpack of them and just keep going.
This literally sounds like something apple would do
only difference is they would call it a bold move, and sign of bravery
Did this forum get invaded by 12 year olds and I am just now realizing this?
I'd make them mandatory - only approved individuals who prove they won't devolve into attention whoring should get a smartphone, free attention and the easiest tool to spread lies is the death of society
No connectivity whatsoever seems like a bad idea when (IMO) a lot of the usefulness of smartphones comes from Google Maps and other GPS apps
Do you realise most of the world has dropped usage of SMS right?, whatsapp and telegran are the main ways of communication here.
It'd make more sense if its price was a 1/4 of what they're asking for.
For the same money you can get a better phone with more features, or save yourself a load of money and get a more utilitarian phone that will survive being thrown around.
Looking it up more though, it looks like it was mainly made for the South Korean market as its being pushed towards students there with a trade in scheme at the end of their exams.
Its just Samsung also pushed it globally as well, guess someone thought it might be a good idea but then again, no trade in scheme anywhere else makes it kinda useless.
Just buy a normal phone is the gist of this.
Not the case in the US. We're a civilized country where unlimited call/text plans start at like $20 a month before accounting for data usage.
And comparatively Whatsapp and the likes are totally free as you're almost certainly already paying for a data plan alongside the SMS plan you're not using.
Data only sims don't exist solely to run tablets and shit, it's entirely possible to run a mobile phone without paying for SMS or voice plans. Legitimately the only times I use SMS are my mum because I'm used to that and keep forgetting to use Whatsapp, and my phone to call a business maybe once a month to book shit. Given I actually installed a decent VoIP app I could easily replace my pay and go SMS/ Data deal with just data.
A reasonable portion of younger mobile users (like under 30) have likely moved away from SMS as it's just outdated now. I can't send sick memes or mixed media over it without incurring extra costs. My data plan however doesn't give a fuck what I send, data is data.
most cell plans in the US throw unlimited SMS and calls on top with little to no additional charge when compared to data only plans
Im 26 and only know two people who still use sms
