It's funny how 26 years ago my country, which is on the opposite end of europe from the UK, was under totalitarian socialist rule that tried to control our population, and now we have actual free speech laws that allow for all forms of expression without going to jail for it while the UK is coming under totalitarian socialist rule I wonder if there's some pivot in the center of europe that turns it into one big political seesaw?

Probably not far from the truth, having nothing better to do. Crime is so low in some parts of the country I feel some lawmakers try to justify their own existence by zealously enforcing dipshit laws so they don't end up with their budgets cut.

I was referring to the kind of people who claim to deeply care about free speech, but in reality just want to be massive racists without being called out on it and have no issues with attempting to silence people that they disagree with. It's important to note that authoritarianism isn't something you can avoid by jumping to the right, or the left.

No shit like that happens all the time. Laws are only as "real" as much as they're enforced, but if it's on the books it can be used. In this case, some fringe elements find it and go "hey let's use this", and the public discourse/spirit has since then sufficiently shifted to the point where the public and the rest of the authorities "allow" it by lack of protest. I'd like to chalk it up to sheerly incompetent legislating, but so much of the UK's recent (IE last 20-30 years) lawmaking is like this, and i just can't. I feel we're at a turning point here, and if we let this go on much longer without re-asserting western princpals back into the UK's legal system, the only thing that could stop it would be disaster at the society-wide level.

We already have that. It's called Incitement. Hate speech and hate crime is literally the substantiation of thought-crime, as it relies on a subjective "feeling of the victim" to foist intent, retroactively, and criminalizes arbitrarily designated thoughts and expressions, regardless of if they're acted upon or not, and as been proven, regardless of if they were earnestly meant or not.

I need to get out of this awful country. Things like this are apparently a priority, when we have knife crime and violent crimes completely out of control across the country. A police force that isn't even around or wont bother to attend active crimes, they just "investigate" after waiting for it to end. Police dont even investigate things like burglaries properly anymore yet they will go after cases like this. What the fuck. Fuck this place, seriously. I've said it so many times before but as soon as I can afford to get out, I'm getting out.

Running away isn't the solution, as much as this country sucks I refuse to be forced out of it by a bunch of corrupt politicians, people need to stand up and fight for what is right in any way they can.

I'd rather not face jail for dissenting.
