He's refusing to pay it and appealing
You know, I feel like a sensible person would've just ate the fine and moved on with their life instead of sinking even more of their time and money on it.
It's a matter of principle at this point. It's like saying, eh this (un-deserved) parking fine is just 7 dollars. Just pay it and be done with it. And surely a lot of people would do that, but I think it's actually good that he's sticking to his case.
I'm guessing you're not entirely aware of who exactly the EDL are? Because they're straight up white supremacists. It's not a case of "my faction" (you'll have to fill me in on who that is btw, I've not identified a "faction" for myself yet) being "at least as bad" because not a single person I know; personally, over the Internet or actively pay attention to has said "yup deserved that lmao nazi". There were tons of people from all angles and leanings thinking this was a fucking silly case through and through, but he for some reason picked the former EDL leader to help represent himself in court. Even if he was did that to provoke a reaction he's still a total goober as being a provocateur for the sake of it isn't a remotely reasonable position.
its ok now Tommy Bobinson isn't affiliated with EDF
His principle is going to waste a lot of peoples' time and money.
This whole farce is a disgrace to Scotland and im glad he's appealing over it.
The fact that this even happened in the first place has wasted a lot of people's time and money. Why use this as a point to stop, when it is an even bigger point against what he's fighting?
Admittedly, I don't know how unlikely it is he'll be able to overturn this, but if he does, would it justify the investment he's put into it? While everyone wants to think of these situations in a David and Goliath story way, in reality he's going to end up putting at least two years worth of time and legal fees into this case. I don't know much of anything about the UK legal system, but can whatever compensation he gets cover that kind of expense if he wins? As well, it doesn't seem to be a groundbreaking case either way, so I doubt there's much of a legal precedent he can set if he wins.
This entire charge in the first place is wasting time and money. Do you not see the value in openly protesting an obviously nonsense use of the justice system?
He just spent two years trying to get it not to fly, and I doubt he's going to be successful on his second attempt.
idk why he doesn't just throw up a gofundme while he's still in the spotlight right now. everyone would foot the bill pretty fast I'd imagine lol.
What a fucking joke, all this drama to end up with a £800 fine. How fucking pathetic.
Such are the consequences of wasting taxpayer money on unnecessary prosecutions. Sometimes, people appeal. They're allowed to do that when they're being prosecuted for a crime.
The UK government are now quite literally employing fun police.
And where's the help coming in from everywhere else? It was a deafening silence, as far as i've seen. And if the only people in the room willing to stand up to defend the literal axiomatic core of our society are people you're tacitly implying as being nazis (which robinson isn't, as far as i've seen), perhaps that should be a shrieking alarm bell in your ear that something is dearly wrong.
The principle of this is that he fights a bullshit conviction, even if it is "just 800 pounds," and gets a higher court ot set a proper precedent that context fucking matters, so that in the future someone else odesn't fall victim to the same kind of bullshit. Because frankly, with this conviction, since the judge literally said context doesn't matter, then just saying "gas the Jews" can get you arrested in Scotland now. If he doesn't fight this, free speech is effectively dead in Scotland, because apparently context doesn't matter, so if anyone gets offended at literally anything you say in Scotland, you can now be arrested for it following this, and the prosecution will have precedent to present to the judge to secure a conviction against you. That's why he's appealing, because this is about more than just a few hundred quid.
This is incredible
I would like to note that the actual goddamn nazi party ultimately dropped the charges, while the UK actually convicted someone for the identical action. i want off 2018's wild ride.
Oh, I absolutely understand that. I just think that either the ending is going to be lackluster and maybe he'll manage to get a little bit of money back or he's going to lose and be out of several thousand pounds because he wanted to drag this out in court for several years.
I mean don't get me wrong the dude comes across as a bit of a retard, and while he's "only" being fined £800, i still think this shit is fucking scary. So what?, I could say something harmless on the internet, and then get slapped with a fine higher than my monthly rent because the authorities didn't like what I posted? I don't give a fuck about people getting done for inciting racial violence online or taking part in any other kind of radical/nazi bullshit- but they can fuck right off if they want to criminalise shitposting.
he's setting up a gofundme for the appeal, he'd rather not let this precident be set meaning others can be charged for similar things than put up with it for himself
I'm more ashamed of the people in this thread thinking he shouldn't appeal and that the social precedent of this outcome amounts to nothing. It's pretty one-sided when the prosecuters are no better, but for some reason they don't want to criticize them. Hmmmm.
oh awesome. lookin forward to that, then. also lol these fucking reporters https://twitter.com/MossadJack/status/988398772614062080
Hot damn that was satisfying. https://puu.sh/A9qIn/dddb2f4e7d.png Look how slack he goes as he staggers back. That's the body language of someone undergoing a fucking revelation.
I'm curious, if he were to just "suck it up" and pay the fine (bless 'im for fighting it), where does the money go? To any oppressed minorities or Jewish people, or to the politicians telling him he's racist?
It's a court ordered fine, and the state itself is the prosecution here. So the payment would go to the state just like a parking ticket or something of the like.
If you pass the Government Sanctioned Context-Free Hate Slur Limit, you pay money directly to the state in penance for your dirty, dirty mouth.
If he just accepts it he's admitting to have committed a hate crime by making an offensive joke. In the words of many hyperbolic sensationalist drama queens worldwide, that sets a dangerous precedent.
The real kicker here NO ONE WAS OFFENDED BY THIS Not until after the legal proceedings took place that is Good, he should drain the entire court dry if he has to, and waste their time as much as he possibly can. I hope he sues everyone that made a big deal out of it, wins, and the internet pays for the legal bill. Do you want to know who really wasted time and money? The absolute cunts that started this bullshit to boot. They wasted their own time on something that should have never been taken to court, ever.
