• Microsoft initiates actions to 'protect its intellectual property' on ElDewrito

Yeah, the amount of people that would actually pay for what Eldewrito actually provides, but as an official Microsoft published work No F2P, with a classic halo experience for PC to enjoy. Obviously they can't just wrap this up as a release and throw it onto the market, but the mods success clearly shows that there's a huge market for this exact game, in a sea currently filled of Battle royale games/cash-ins. A F2P model will ruin what makes it stand out
yeah well relying on people to not cheat out of the goodness of their hearts never works

That's why PC and console alike have had anti-cheat since the days of Quakeworld.
The only way they could hope to make up for this much of a middle-finger to such a neglected community is to release Master Chief Collection for the PC, and hopefully with a sweeping wave of a patch that fixes the remaining problems. And even then, the forge options will continue to be more limited than need be, modding won't really be an option Microsoft would want players to get away with, and it'd be locked behind the Windows Store horseshit.
Burning bridges by releasing poorly optimized, half-finished, bad ports of games after the console release (Halo 2, now Halo Wars after someone lit a fire under their ass) and ignoring the cries for them to bring Halo to PC from tons of fans. Halo 5 Forge wasn't a bad port but it was more of a tech demo than an actual game. As I've said it was far from a complete experience. Saying that they've 'never catered' to the PC Halo players is kind of funny considering that Halo 1 was amazing on PC, had great mod tools and support, and Gearbox/Bungie/MS even released Custom Edition with tons of support after the game had come out. It was only after Halo 2's PC port was such a disaster that they decided to forgo the PC community. Halo: Online was literally an outsourced, non-canon, Russian-market-only, F2P/P2W microtransaction mine. It was not a 'dedicated PC game' for the Halo community. MCC having to be fixed just shows that MS and 343 (combined with their handling of the entire franchise) couldn't care less about Halo and only see it as another cash cow.
Can't wait to buy Halo 3 exclusively through the Windows 10 store. /s
Not disagreeing with you but you can't set guidelines and change them every time you run into something that doesn't fit said guidelines. Especially from a corporate standpoint.
will happen if they choose to use xbox gamertags exclusively
So, Microsoft does the logical thing and shuts down a project that distributes copyrighted content? I don't really understand why this is surprising.
One thing remains clear – the community really wants more Halo on PC. As we look ahead, we’re very excited about the prospects of an official classic Halo experience making its way to PC Oh okay so you're going to pretend that you're not going to make it for years while people endlessly ask for it, and when somebody finally actually busts out all the time and effort to make it real, you C&D it, but only post-release? Eat a dick, Microsoft.
No one is surprised and microsoft is well within their rights to do this, that doesn't mean it isn't a dick move.
I find it interesting how Valve are a corporation too and they have very very good lawyers, but never shut anyone despite millions of fan projects out there. Why is that not the norm One is a publically traded company, and the other one isn't - for starters.
Give this PR guy a raise, he definitely knows how to flesh out "We currently have no plans to put Halo on the PC".
I don't see how it's a dick move though. It's pretty much just natural, you can't expect to distribute their stuff without consequence - it's an unrealistic idea.
That'd be ridiculous. You can't pirate a free game.
But if it's region locked?
Still not piracy. Region locking is just a developers way of asking you nicely not to play it.
Whoops, didn't realise halo online was a free thing.
You didn't even need a VPN. I signed up, even said I lived in America, and was let in. There was absolutely no region locking whatsoever.
As far as i know, that isn't how it works. You can't have copyrighted material made public domain if you don't stop people using it or anything like that, but reading the article on Halo Waypoint that doesn't seem to be quite what their issue with this is. The whole point of copyright is to stop others using it with your permission, and the community guidelines they mentioned were the situations were they would allow you to use the IP; this doesn't follow those guidelines. This seems to be quite simply a case of them not liking that their copyrighted material is being distributed and made use of without their permission, something that pretty much the majority of companies/developers/IP holders would also be unhappy with. You can't simply do what you want with someone elses IP. This is effectively taking someone elses copyrighted work, cutting out parts out it to build it into it's own thing, and then releasing it outside of the owners original intent all without permission and while going against their guidelines. While it is disappointing for fans, they have to act in the best interests for the company, and this would certainly be something that could have negative consequences if they let it continue.
This is what the ElDewrito team has to say. “While we are humbled and inspired to see the amount of passion poured into this project, the fact remains that it’s built upon Microsoft-owned assets that were never lawfully released or authorized for this purpose. As this project reverberated across the community, our team took a step back to assess the materials and explore possible avenues, while Microsoft, like any company, has a responsibility to protect its IP, code and trademarks. It’s not optional in other words. “ “BTW, we’re not “shutting down the mod” or going after the Eldewrito crew - we’re enacting action to remove the Halo Online code and packages from places it’s being hosted.. “ There was no Cease and Desist, no DMCA, just an brief conversation about what they suggest we do.   What does this mean for the future of ElDewrito? To be completely honest, we do not know the answer to this question yet. Our conversation with 343 was very brief. Since ElDewrito itself is simply an open source mod and not a Microsoft asset, the mod itself will not be taken down. However, it appears that any Microsoft assets required to play the game (MS23 builds, Full 0.6 game zips, ect) will likely be taken down by Microsoft. All we know is that have been told to temporarily halt development until more information is available, and we must honor this request. During this time, please do not make threats or harass 343 Industries.  Can We Still Play 0.6?  Yes, absolutely! Play the hell out of it. Create more incredible forge creations. You can resume playing 0.6 as normal. It is important to note that ElDewrito itself is not being taken down - just any and all of Microsoft’s assets are. In the meantime, enjoy the great game that we have poured our hearts into.
its because the market has been there forever. People have been wanting halo back on pc since 3, but microsoft wont have it. So when someone finally busts their asses and releases a ported version of a game from 2007 for free, and microsoft writes a half assed "apology", of course people are going to be livid. Microsoft would lose nothing unless they were planning to release an official version. Look at valve, Blackmesa was a fan project of remaking HL1 with source's new engine. Its downright an AAA experience. Valve could have shut it down, but instead they handed them the IP and allowed them to sell the game under them to make extra cash for doing such a good job. Thats how you treat your userbase right, Not by ignoring people's requests and then running in to rain on the parade when someone does out of the goodness of their own heart.
That is an interesting way to do it.
it honestly kind of bugs me how the subreddit just turn into 'man fuck 343i fuck microsoft thanks eldewrito devs for making this great game' and it's just like... yes it sucks, but they have an IP to protect, and not to discount the work the eldewrito devs put into fixing it, but they did not make Halo 3.
You might be a little biased toward 343.
it's not the name is it
Name and avatar, same way you might assume I'm a Valve fanboy at first glance; especially if I'm defending Valve for something abhorrent.
my name is actually to do with my IRL name, nothing to do with 343i. also i want halo on pc as much as the next guy but if they need to protect their IP, i can see why they'd crack down on their own assets being redistributed without permission
