• Why your social media might contain gammon

Man it's just so weird for me to comprehend all of this. For as long as I have been on the internet, the core principal that the majority of the left-leaning populous has supported was that racism and discrimination based on skin colour is bad. And to contrast with this, in recent years, it has always seemed like the left's prerogative has been to dismiss the politically right's opinions on society as being rooted in racism and intolerance, and that their ideas should be suppressed because they are toxic. And now that the left has created something with an inherently racist idea at its core that can and most likely will reach millions (due to big sites like the bbc reporting on this already), and are being called out by the right as being actually racist, they just dismiss it as them being snowflakes (basically), which is imo completely hypocritical. I know I'm gonna be shit on for making this post, but there is no denying discrimination based on skin colour is racist, and I just feel like this has to be said. Letting something like this become an accepted stereotype would be a detriment to the goal of actually ending racism, and just serve to further divide people.
It's not just this double standard crap (it's not possible to be racist to "white' people") that is a detriment to the goal of ending racism, pushing notions that make people more/hyper aware of race and skill color is the biggest issue instead of encouraging people to care less about it. People shouldn't care about race, skin color, or what group you belong to because you are an individual and should be treated as such. Identity politics is a cancer.
I wasn't aware flushed red, high blood pressure skin was a skin color. Left makes a single joke about angry middle aged conservatives and suddenly they are just hateful and pushing hate. Im sorry, when the fuck did the left run around with deportations buses that say mexicans are rapists and murderers. Or when they went to the streets marching about race purity while beating on minorities. Or dismiss all criticisms with a generic sweeping "snowflake" label. Or using snowflakes as an excuse to be a racist piece of shit. What about the left removing protections from LGBT people, and separating immigrant families and saying "the kids will go to an orphanage or something" when taking kids out of spite. Please I can go on and on and on and on and on to the end of time with all the immensely shitty stuff the right has been pushing since the orange was in office. Calling someone a ham is just a small joke (especially if we are going with even a quarter of "jokes" ive heard from the other side), if they or you can't handle that, imagine how the rest of the population feels seeing the horrible shit happening on an daily basis.
Flushing bright red to such an amusing degree is basically a trait only pale skin can manage, due to the lack of tinting to obscure the rushing blood. It's roughly as racial as, say, hair that tends to grow short and curl in on itself. You know, like that "Nappy headed ho" guy a while back.
I can't help but imagine if the same joke was made about "black people" then those within the left would be sounding the alarm calling, people to action. Those who are triggered by the statement aside, it's still important because it highlights a double standard that those within the left have.
Because, rose tinted skin isn't a race ffs. Left would be sounding the alarm if someone called a black person a nigger because its an actual derogatory term used for centuries that has nothing to do with the actual color, but the ethnicity. Unless a person is constantly ham colored, then its not racist. Whats next? Can't call a person pizza face because its racist against Italians? Get real my dude. Know whats a double standard? People getting upset over a joke, but not upset over the absolutely diabolical bullshit that has been happening to minorities for centuries and especially today. Then having the balls to fucking justify being a racist prick because someone joked about you being flushed.
The core difference between people calling others "gammon" and people calling say...Muslims? "towelheads" or something is that the gammon insult is not steeped in a history of oppression, and is more focused on a particular set of behaviours that are largely only expressed by white, middle aged men who seem to be constantly flushed red. Namely; inane bigotry, incessant name calling and vomit inducing "patriotism". Them being white itself isn't the problem or the target of the insult, it just so happened that them being white enough to visibly flush their skin red makes them look like a pork product. This is nowhere near enough of a concern to start shouting from the rooftops that the left have lost and it's time to abandon the leftysphere. It's a recent thing that will probably die out in a few days and have no real impact other than rustling the jimmies of a shitload of Brexit voters who've spent the last two years insulting everyone who isn't a white straight male who hates the EU more than their wife. Shit it's not even something the "entire left" are using, it's a really small fragment of Twitter users, there's still tons out there trying to actually argue with people who might be influenced by good arguments (more than I expect exist on the right by a long fucking shot). The reason it's even being covered by the news is because it's weird seeing this kind of behaviour from the left, that and the BBC must appease their Tory masters and paint the left as Satan himself if they don't want their funding cut.
I wasn't aware that being right wing was the same as being a racist. You know you can be fiscally and socially conservative without being a piece of shit right?
If a small number of left-wing twitter users using a vaguely racially charged insult is indicative of the entirety of 'the left' (a vague non-existent generalisation of a wide range of possible beliefs on policy issues) being fundamentally flawed/hypocritical. Then it stands to reason, that if we apply the same standard, a significantly larger but still minority of right-wing social media users using significantly more racially charged insults is indicative of the entirety of 'the right' (a vague non-existent generalisation of a wide range of possible beliefs on policy issues) being fundamentally flawed/hypocritical.
I feel like gammon wouldn't even have to be exclusively for middle-aged white men since I would imagine that there are middle-aged light-skinned Asian men out there who just so happen to be bigots and are capable of flushing and getting fucking angry very easily. To me, that's part of the reason why the word doesn't seem that bad, even though it seems to be primarily used for old angry white men in America.
i don't care about white dudes being called gammon in itself, but i do think it is weird that so many news sites picked this up as a story. i hadn't even heard of the term before this article and i follow a hefty number of leftist people on twitter.
Not nearly as much as they have recently tho
Comparing ham to the complexion of angry middle-aged white men is the latest internet culture battle. Not upset, I just feel like you may have missed that part.
Forgot ham people exist. Don't forget pizza people too, that's casual racism, same with craterface for moon people. Oh also don't forget hipster is a racist slur. Seriously, its mocking how a sub sect of dickheads look given the context. It's not about them being white, its about them being offensive and turning red face when doing so. Just like how pizza face mocks mostly pasty people with pimples all over, you're not mocking them for being white, you're mocking them for having zits all over their face and look like pizza.
I do not know how more plainly this can be said. Do not mock people based on the color of their skin. Do not make excuses for people mocking other people because of the color of their skin. Do not try to fashion mental loopholes where - if these specific prerequisites are met - you will permit mocking other people based on the color of their skin. And do not try to reason that, since the other guys mock people based on the color of their skin a lot, you should be permitted to mock people based on the color of their skin a little. These have always, always been bad choices. Even the "Craterface" comparisons aren't too kindly, as lowering to that level of petty namecalling is a 100% jerk move if nothing else. This is only a political thing only if you want it to be political, if you think that people being called out in this regard is a 'Victory' for the 'Enemy'. This should not be acceptable. By the terms most people who are touting this go by, as well as by a simple rule of thumb. And most of the things they would consider 'Unacceptable' on 'the other side' certainly are too. But if you wish to essentially build a platform on the idea of being the better man, then be it.
It doesn't even matter about how specific the "gammon" intersection is between being white, being conservative/uninformed, being middle aged/older and still getting so emotional is. You'll still be called racist by them. Who even cares. Just mock them.
Its the color of their fucking flushed face, not them being white. The reason its even related to what is being discussed is because a majority of conservatives saying racist shit get red faced when doing so. Majority of US conservatives happen to be white. If you want to go by your "hurr its racist!" logic, why doesn't it apply to liberals who get flushed in the face? Its because context matters, something you and others just rather throw under the bus and miss the point entirely and rather get on high horses by claiming "they are just as bad for being racist😎". And its even worse when you say "well you're being petty by mocking them". Have you forgotten an entire generation that has made sweeping generalizations on this current generation? What about the fact that they call this generation snowflakes. That's why its even funny in the first place. Someone made a joke about how conservative speakers get all flustered when yelling hateful shit, so in turn the people who have been throwing snowflake as an insult immediately become snowflakes and say they are offended. Like can you even breath from the thin atmosphere from how high you are up on that horse. A fucking entire party has been gaining so much ground that they act immune for being the most despicable pieces of shit. We have a president who proudly claimed he would sexually assault women and got a slap on the wrist. Had a runner who was literally a child molester get to the primaries in his election. Had one guy make sweeping generalizations that the entirety of Hispanic immigrants are rapists. If you really honestly think people making a small joke about these horrible people is them being the aggressors/haters, you're either extremely naive or white knighting for literal scum of the earth. Good lord the past posts about this have literally reeked of "so much for the tolerant left" bullshit.
I've never heard of the word "gammon" along before, so when I looked at the title I thought it was something about Backgammon and how old people might want you to play it with them on Facebook
The other person being bad Does not permit you to be bad. Those people are the scum of the earth. And they have all the power right now. Because their opponents have a massive reputation issue; Apparently even worse than those people, because they've failed against the despicable pieces of shit. Do you not see how making memes involving skin color, against the people you rally against and discredit on the basis of being racist, and then bending over backwards to try and explain away why their skin color mocking is wrong but yours is okay is not going to help this shitshow you're so good at laying out? Try to pigeonhole me as a closet Republican/GOP/whatever, I can't stop you, but I actually agree a hell of a lot more with the left than the right. Which is why it infuriates me when they do everything in their power to trip over their own dicks against what should be the easiest political opposition since... well, ever. This is not the time for "But he did it!". Especially if one would call that person out for doing it. Just... consistency. When given the choice between obvious shit and hypocritical shit, obvious shit is going to be picked almost every time. If only because it feels less demeaning. This should not be a wishy-washy issue for the anti-prejudice party. All this is is more ammo for the very people you hate, and good ammo at that.
Pretty sure the whole point Codemaster is getting at is that this whole gammon thing has nothing to do with skin color, but rather the skin's tendency to get red when flushed which happens regardless of skin color. If that is actually the intent and the way the meme is used, I can't see how it can be hypocritical. If it's being used specifically against white people alone (as opposed to just specific groups of people who happen to be majorly white) then there might be a problem here.
Which is fine and all, but I believe just about all that anyone's said so far is that if it is based on skin color, then that's racist, which is also fine. I mean if it's just something the article tacked on there because the majority of the people that this applies to are white and that's it, it's whatever, fuck this administration and everyone in it, they deserve whatever shit is flung in their general direction, it just seemed like people were needlessly tacking on comments about their skin color.
Tbh when I first saw this gammon joke it was around the time of the last general election in the UK, comprised of a compilation of every bloke who focused on Corbyn's apparent distaste for nuclear weapons on question time or some shit, with a caption along the lines of "what is it about blokes like this and getting hard at the thought of nuclear Armageddon?" Idk where the "that's racism!! so much for the tolerant left!!!" angle has come from but i'm white as fuck and i was sharing that shit constantly, because it's obviously a joke about just how many old flustered conservative blokes were brought on, and how they all ended up getting equally red in the face during their little rants. It's no more racist than mocking clueless tourists by depicting them with sunburn. Members of the ~snowflake generation~ poked fun at some grumpy old gits on social media for getting all hot and bothered on tv, and now there's accusations of racism against white people being flung around. The Irony is staggering.
