The candle wobbling made me think its gonna drop anytime
You'll have to ask the democratically elected government that, not the Royals. They're the ones who control the budget.
Hahah, I slept through it.
Pretty sure 95% of my country also did too.
I have never heard anything more idiotic.
"I have seen what this country is really like."
Fucking LOL
I didn't want to be the one to break the news to you...but the parts of the UK that actually make money are already that. It's a fairly natural progression for a capitalist society. Even if it does lead to vapid bullshit being number one.
Don't forget all of the racism and the creation of the trans-atlantic slave trade
Nationalism has nothing to do with poverty, the real cause of our problems is capitalism and the greed that comes with it that corrupts our politicians and gives too much power to large corporations.
We're hardly nationalistic as it stands anyway, your average Briton doesn't give a toss about the monarchy and our national identity is an amalgamation of many different cultures.
Nationalism might not have a place in the modern world or the future, but it was absolutely essential to all nations on earth to survive.
I feel like you're mixing government with culture, there are a lot of people who identify with the British culture who are not apart of the establishment, and you're completely dismissing their identity due to you're own overwhelming cynicism.
I hate imperialism and nationalism possibly even more than you but handwaving the influence on culture (good or bad) of a nation like England is fucking stupid at the best of times.
"Creation of." You're giving us too much credit, it was the Spanish and Portuguese who kicked that off. Talk about our racist history all you want, the Somerset case, the Slave Trade Act and the Slavery Abolition Act are evidence enough of our efforts to abolish the trade. We don't have a history of Jim Crow in the UK either.
Kind of weird how if you swap that to "down south" and congress instead of parliament, that your statement also applies to the US.
The hype surrounding this wedding rivals those poorly written teen scifi dramas, while we all celebrate two people getting married from an elite class that are so loved and admired the rest of the country is in absolute shambles.
It's a bullshit parade of our royalty when there's a crime epidemic, disabled people are being left to starve or die, homeless rates are increasing, shortage of police and social services are being stripped in the name of "austerity" that hasn't worked for the last 8 years and the NHS is slowly trying to be privatized for Theresa May's cronies with shares in health industries.
But oooh nooo look at the pretty couple!!
look dude i'm from the north too and yeah, things are pretty not good because the current government doesn't give a singular shit about us here
but that's no reason to shit on the royals. i mean, i disagree with the institution of royalty, that these people are born into extreme wealth and privilege, HOWEVER at least the royals as people actually strive to do shit with their wealth and power (see their charity and international diplomacy work) rather than sit on their thrones and accumulate wealth, laughing at the peasants as they do while also passing policies to make life worse for the bottom rung
tbh i found it a nice distraction from the near-constant doom and gloom on the tv. nice weather, a few cold drinks and watching a royal wedding, a great day overall.
It's not really public money. It's the money from their estates. We give them an allowance of their money to allow their estates to be maintained so they can generate revenue, as well as cover the family's personal expenditure.
Sovereign Grant Act 2011
The Crown Estate is the property of the Sovereign “in right of the Crown”. Since 1760 each monarch has surrendered its revenue to the Exchequer in return for government support.
I've been laughing today, at work our main demographic is 60~90 year old females.
Soon as the wedding went live we had absolutely no calls for the entire thing.
Actually being paid to sit and do nothing all because some guy and girl is getting married and all the old folks are patriotic as fuck or something.
the money doesn't go into their personal bank accounts, as @Cyteless points out, it is almost exclusively spent on estate maintenance and travel costs.
put it this way, if we stopped the Sovereign Grant, it would have no noticeable effect on the lives of people in the UK, because expenditures into other areas and whatever hair-brained scheme the tories have baked up eclipse the money that goes into the Grant.
i feel the royal family at least do enough work to justify receiving this grant. they spearhead charities, inspire people and act as international diplomats. as it stands, they're better foreign representatives than our actual foreign secretary, if you should be mad at anyone for misusing public funding it should be that sad excuse of a human being.
How do the red coats feel about Royalty marrying a traitorous Colonial?
I hate it when people use this arguement, the money we give the Royal family comes back to us by the tenfold due to tourism and other monitary gains from their properties (AKA RENT).
The Royal Family is actually not wealthy at all when you actually look into what they own, it isn't as much as you actually think. The state owns most of what you likely think the Royals own for example, they just rent it essentially.
Additionally, while big events like this do cost an insane amount, we make it back from the coverage and other tied in promotional material, the only thing that will hurt us massively related to the Royals, is when the Queen kicks the fucking bucket.
That funeral is going to shut down the country for literally a week.
We must live in 2 different United Kingdoms.
If I recall correctly, you're in the nebulous, cosmopolitan part.
"cosmopolitan
adjective /ˌkɑz·məˈpɑl·ɪ·tən/
containing people and things from many different parts of the world, or having experience of many different places and things."
How xenopbohic of you.
Clearly Harry has good taste in cars:

Scotland?
That'd be a valid point if the taxpayer wasn't covering it. People are absolutely right to take issue with it.
My mistake, thought in another thread you said you were from the south.
Sure, call me xenophobic if you want. I didn't realise cultures can only be appreciated when they're not your own.
Ok I have to admit that cover of stand by me is good.

I say we burn her at the stake, can't have the bloodline being tainted by a Yank.
Not that it's anywhere near pure in the first place mind you.
It's arguably largely responsible for or at least contributed to a lot to many major wars throughout history. There's nothing wrong with being patriotic, but literally thinking your country is the best in the world for some arbitrary reason is not a very healthy view to have.
Hasnt this already been covered many times?
The royal family and all its tie-ins bring a lot more money to the UK than they cost to sustain, via tourism and crown land. Each event like this bolsters the royal family and reignites tourism to the UK.
I walked past the TV when BBCA was rerunning it , I like the Pastor's speech about the world needing more love.
