PS4 heading into end of its life cycle, PlayStation CEO says

more like 4 games station, ha
Because 8th gen followed one of the longest console generations in history.
The Switch doesn't have the exact same target audience as the other home consoles. Nintendo DS and 3DS have huuuge libraries and their power didn't limit other third parties to bring their games there.
The new consoles which probably arrive in 2020/2021 still need additional 1-3 years to really take off, so the Switch has a life cycle until 2023 I would say.
Lets be honest, no one bought the switch because of raw power. No one buys nintendo for that reason either. They buy it because they want good games.
I hope the next console gets a good god damn game lineup right off the bat.
Like psone did, fuck pushing out new hardware if you don't have a solid reason to bring it out asides "Prettier graphics but the same aged engines".
Is Microsoft doing the same thing? Or are they planning to keep the Xbox ONE name just like Windows 10? After all they can just price drop the XB1X and then make a new one
Xbox Two
PS5 should be interesting, even if it is 3/4 years off. Sony will need Todo more than just "we're not Microsoft" like for the PS4 to "win" that generation. Hoping for PS4 backwards compatibility at the least.
Naw you can't ever actually have two in sequence, it's gotta be something like just "Xbox" again with no way to distinguish it from the original.
Once you have a bunch that don't make sense, then you release one that's straight up XBOX 2 even though you're on 5-6.
Why do people think that 6 years is a short time for a console's lifecycle...
What this means: PS4 is now expected to have diminishing sales from this point onwards, in other words it has peaked.
What this doesn't mean: PS4 is now dead and PS5 comes out tomorrow
prolly 2-3 more years off.
I don't regret getting my PS4 in 2014 since I played a lot of great games with it but if it weren't for Bloodborne and Yakuza 0, then I really would not have missed anything. The other exclusives are good and in some cases great, but Bloodborne and Yakuza 0 were the only games to really blow my mind.
I guess Nier: Automata is also there since it's tied with The Witcher 3 for my personal GOAT but I played those both on PC
360 and Wii won that gen, and Nintendo managed to screw up even further.
Xbox V
You can buy mine if you'd like, it's been collecting dust for the past like 1,5 years
A PS4 only really seems worth it if you're a massive fan of FROM Software as well as the Yakuza and Persona games. I'm really only interested in Bloodborne, so I've yet to buy one.
Other than that, most worthwhile games on the system are either getting simultaneous PC releases, or a PC release soon after or as much as a year later at most. Yeah, a year seems like a long time, but I'd gladly wait that long for a version of the game that runs better, looks better, and can potentially have modding support either officially or unofficially. Not to mention sometimes that wait comes with a drop in price.
I'd actually say the Xbone had more interesting exclusives for me, if MS didn't also decide to bring them over to PC. The Xbone X seems nice though, not gonna lie there.
Having actual exclusives is what pretty much sold me on the Switch. I don't really care about graphical fidelity anymore, especially since a lot of developers have found a lot of success with more stylistic approaches to visuals (Overwatch, Fortnite, etc) and less success with more realistic approaches. Nintendo has been the kings of that approach for so many years, and to be honest, I feel like we're reaching the point where generational leaps in terms of creating more realistic visuals are only getting smaller and smaller. I believe the last big step we've made in that regard is that whole "real-time ray tracing" tech that's been shown off recently, but I doubt we'll have any sort of hardware to run that at any decent amount of performance for years.
the 360 had a strong start but towards the end the ps3 did really well and it probably carried over to the ps4 as much as ms botching the launch. sony has a really good exclusive library i think right now the only reason to buy a xbone/x is the backwards compatibility.
If the second article is right 2021 seems like a pretty reasonable release for the next gen
only time this was mentioned was before they actually settled on an engine. Decima currently has no PC port. Death Stranding likely is not coming to PC at all.
I really felt that PS4 kind of lacked behind and I did not use it much anymore. Luckily, God of War was a great surprise and I did not anticipate a game to really push a console during such a late period.
I think you might find this page handy: https://gematsu.com/exclusives/ps4
Just to name a few games of interest, there is: The Last Guardian, Shadow of the Colossus 2018, the God of War games (3 and new one), the entirety of Kingdom Hearts, Gravity Rush games, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Journey...
I mean, compare the games that came out after the first year of the PS2 vs the games that came to the PS4 around the same timeframe. The PS4 really haven't gotten that many good exclusives aside from some niche Japanese games like the Digimon Story games.

I thought the PS4 did okay. The only exclusive I can think of for the Xbox One are Halo (which is bad now), Gears of War 4 (also on PC), and ReCore (also on PC). The PS4 has a fair few good exclusives:
God of War (as you said)
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Bloodborne
Nioh (on PC now, but it was exclusive for half a year)
Persona 5
Infamous Second Son
Infamous First Light
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Uncharted The Lost Legacy
Until Dawn
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Then there are some good looking games which are coming in the next couple of years:
Death Stranding
Ghost of Tsushima
Spiderman
The Last of Us Part II
Days Gone
The main problem is the mid-tier games died off in the 7th generation so we don't have the vast library that the PS2 had. We need more games that aren't AAA "be a success or a small nation will go bankrupt" titles.
The Xbox.
Like The Final Destination and The Fast and Furious.
PS3 and 360 felt like they lasted forever. I'll be surprised if we see PS5 anytime soon.
Also, does anyone else think PS5 sounds ugly as shit? Wouldn't surprise me if they go with a new name.
I want exclusives to die off as a concept because I hate this idea that we need to separate systems. I'm not buying a new machine just so I can play the few 'good' games it has.
I dunno what to think about that mentality. Exclusives are literally the only reason I buy home consoles. I'd prefer if all exclusives were also on PC, but the reality is that a lot of those games just wouldn't get funded if they were allowed to be on everything.
They'll call it the Xbox Original, just to be even more confusing
Timed exclusives i am ok with
Being trapped on a systrmvthat will eventually be abandoned and forgotten i hate because it makes it impossible to archive and makes it impossibly expensive to get access to all games on all systems
Xbox OG.
lol, why are so many people taking this as a negative thing? We're still on track to have the longest span of time between generations. Gen 5 (PS1) to Gen6 (PS2) was 5 years, Gen 6 to Gen 7 (PS3) was 6 years, Gen 7 to Gen 8 (PS4) was 7 years. If the CEO's comments that there's still a good 3 years left, that'll be 8 years between generations
This generation has felt slow though, I think in part because Xbone and PS4 came out a year before they really needed to. The first year and a half after launch, my PS4 mostly collected dust. It's only lately that I've been playing it more and more as we get more exclusives.
I don't think any of the console companies should put out a new generation until they have a launch line-up of at least 2 or 3 first party games, if not at launch then at least within the first year
