That's actually basically the opposite of how things are: the math doesn't ban it explicitly (except for like that paper I linked, but general relativity by itself allows it) but there's reason to suspect that there's deeper physics that bans it that we don't quite understand yet. We have no observational reason to suspect that FTL exists, and there are ad hoc results which point to a "no," but there's no theory that makes it manifest yet.
Again no mention of the pulse drive just quietly sitting in the corner wishing it had friends...
