Github already RIP'd the moment the new owners went all political which was quite some time ago. As for now, Github "open" for as long as it's in their interest to be open, just like any other corporate.
Despite the fact that GitHub went political it didn't compromise the quality of their platform.
I'm sure it will turn out as well as the Skype acquisition OneHub
It would be foolish to expect anything less from them. Learn from the past.
Honestly the worst thing about this so far is someone already used "Is Microsoft about to git-merge with GitHub?" as a title pun.

I have very little faith in this. I mostly fear that Microsoft will do the same thing they’ve always done: make bloated software that has no clear target audience for most of it’s features (Office, Windows, etc). I can't wait for a federated GitLab or something. We need more decenteralised software using techniques like federated networks.
i was super worried, but now i'm less worried https://i.imgur.com/P340TZl.png
tbh code repo is such a simple thing it's not like theres much Microsoft can do to fuck it up, and if they really did, people can just migrate to other places I guess?
wish MS would embrace, extend, and extinguish electron.js
They always say this, though. It's meaningless, we don't know when they'll swoop in and start up-fucking. Does Github make any appreciable amount of money? If not, then why else would MS buy it if not to fuck it up eventually for their own purposes?

github has some pretty bad marketing strategies. They charge use of the platform for enteriprise/groups who want their projects hosted, but closed source (so, private repos). Facepunchstds use github for their everything last I checked up on it. Pictured: Garry's private contributions https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1755/d07bdcfd-4ffc-4381-b7be-6da91f24777c/image.png A lot of people joke about how no one really actually pays for github, people do, but honestly it's such a minority, I wonder how they actually keep afloat, venture?
Can't wait for them to accidentally kill production database once again.
because Microsoft uses github more than any other organization github going under screws MS just as much as it screws GH
Makes me wonder how many people put up their own Gitlab CE servers

What "left wing hiring process" ?
A bit worried. I still remember when I used MSN. They then removed too many features that made me jump to Skype. Then they brought Skype and removed the same features, that made me jump to Discord. Wouldn't surprise me if they're already are talking about Discord, followed by them ruining the platform like MSN and Skype. Hopefully they like GitHub as it is.
embrace extend extinguish
Fukken doubt Microsoft would buy discord when, in doing so they would ruin not only the value of Skype, but also discord. Suddenly you've got two different chat applications that do the exact same thing. Tencent will buy it. They already have a minority stake of epic, they own Riot. Their shares go far through many companies we all know of, Snap Inc. Tesla, Ubisoft, Activision/blizzard. Their efforts into breaking their chat app (wechat) into the international market have been unsuccessful, and they've funded discord multiple times, so it's not like they don't have them in their radar.

I would very seriously look for an alternative if they bought a majority stake. A lot of Chinese(-owned) software is an utter privacy nightmare, especially the communication tools.
I honestly wish I knew how to code so I had a reason to be angry about this
There are people already concerned https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1755/882891ec-d6e1-43a5-af38-9caa45ae8951/image.png Discord have stated in their privacy policy that they do share information with related companies, among other topics. Their "never put ads in the app" could be contradicted (it has never happened) if you believe that them (or their related companies) run marketing communications on a opt-out basis
