Steam's getting a new chat system: embeds, uploads, better voice chat, and more

I appreciate this since steam's footprint on the battery is quite low.
Looking at it using as much battery as explorer
Web browsers take over 60%
Moving shit to web browsers it just asking for imperfections with high amounts of overhead
Oh, I hate electron. But that's still why one feels older than the other.
It's because one is built with tech that is quite literally older, and discord can just nab all the design elements that make stuff look modern natively.
My morning has been ruined.
can someone explain to me what im even looking at
when a UI element is defined by radius, rather than just height and width, it suggests that it's going to be rendered as a circular shape. in other words, steam avatars could be taking the same route twitter avis did, losing the square for a circle. many people were not a fan when this happened previously on twitter
oh i know about the whole shitty circle thing i just had absolutely no clue what was going on in that code or w/e
Fuck apple for inflicting this pox on us, and fuck every other company for following them along when their design has been in the gutter ever since jobs died

I don't use Steam a lot (I only play with people I know IRL basically, so Facebook it is), but I'm glad they're updating it - it's really showing its age, and it's clunky as hell.
Triangular avatars when? are they going to be brave enough to do it
Hexagons are 200 iq design choices (if you don't use squares)
They show a lot more based on their safe areas, and they tessellate harder than a mother fuckka
Please no
When will they stop deleting every link sent to a friend without telling you?
Why does it even do this in the first place?
if they stole every design from discord I wouldn't even mind
I dont know, but i stopped using steam chat almost completely when it started deleting all of my youtube links.
some kinda protection against phishing, probably
the entire steam client just sucks, it's so slow and clunky and looks like a piece of software from 2005 (which it basically is)
The filter is not broken anymore, but that's not to say we don't exactly know which urls they are indeed filtering.
That and they don't warn the sender that it has been filtered.
Like, yeah, it's good to stop phising attemps, which was a big fucking issue a few years ago
and sometimes they just filtered entire TLDs because they were so cheap.
I bought a .link domain to be super edgy with the link filter.
Was actually already filtered before I even got to use it
The git repo that tracked changes hasn't been updated in years
At least they block G2A
I mean I can't even send personal links with my .xyz domain.
It's pretty easy to circumvent just by adding disruption to the link, but it really does suck when you have no idea if something you sent got deleted.
Looks like Discord lit a fire under their ass. Still though, Steam's been in need of a massive update for ages now. It's funny how it's still the go-to against all other game marketplace clients which still have the public perception of "literally cancer", yet Origin and Uplay run much more smoothly and stably than Steam at this point. Valve's gotten complacent being the market leader, whereas the others are actually still trying to improve.
And maybe when that's done, they can then go back to making games.
The new client was supposed to hit beta last year, but, you know, Valve time.
pre 2009 steam design please
I see it consistently with people linking me to Google Drive stuff. I have no idea why Steam blocks productivity tools.
Steam is dated but I hope the basic friend-networking functionality doesn't change. I don't like the way Discord does it at all and I don't want Steam to turn into a group-based chatroom.
I think Steam is going the Discord route, sound files have at mention stuff like Discord and Slack and also have voice channel enter/exit sounds like those two

It sounds like they're going for some watery theme like with Big Picture
God I hate this school of sound design. Steam is going to feel like my Roku
i dont like any of these new sounds
Being able to embed things into Steam's chat sounds all well and good until your friend calls your attention, only for Goatse to suddenly appear, with the abyss staring pridefully at you.
As for the sounds, I can't play them at all for some reason. Something about no viable MIME type for it. Anyone have a mirror?
Shows up as not existing to me, anyone saved some pics ?
