i dislike the group chat thing at the bottom of the friends list.
I'm thinking that the group chat thing being unhidable is Valve intentionally doing it to try force people into using it, probably not but its just an observation.

it doesnt allow you to do anything else on steam if you opt into it unless you restart so yeah
opted in, opted out, opted back in, nothing
seeing the popup for a player tag after opening a chat by double clicking them from the friends list is seriously pissing me off, too
just consider yourself lucky
or reinstall steam, that seems to fix it
Dear lord, I discovered an exploit that crashes your steam chat PERMANENTLY. You literally cannot escape this, it crashes it even after restarting steam/your computer, and you can't dismiss it as the error keeps showing up.
Of course they're going to the usual "let's clone every bloated chat application with too many features" route. Electron and round avatars can fuck off. Why does every god damn application want to be some bloated resource hogging js slow piece of shit?

it's software by valve, it'll never kill discord. they'll release it to the public and then the person who made this update will leave the company and it'll never be touched again until the next person comes along to update it yet again in 12 years time

If there's a discord killer I'd rather it be something open, not another centrally-ran closed-source thing.
Also this still doesn't have all of the features discord does, especially with custom emojis, animated avatars, and the community features.
It's still pretty nice though for when I have to actually message people using steam, having essential shit like inline uploads is great.

Avatars are actually square, and it runs pretty much the same as old steam.

I can't upload images most of the time because of "bad session".
Works pretty well for me though, it is also amusing that the video player seems to be the default
(Which is also merciful since a lot of websites fuck up when they implement their own player)
I mean fun stuff is what made Discord popular on top of its UI design, ease of access stuff for voice chat and such. If it wasn't the case everyone would be still using Ventrilo/Mumble/Teamspeak. The custom emojis, and even the animated avatars just added an extra layer of personality, charm and made chatting with your pals even more comfy and fun overall.
This new interface looks fucking abysmal
