• Steam's getting a new chat system: embeds, uploads, better voice chat, and more

Electron is easier for frontend developers due to using familiar languages that have been around for donkey's years, for sure, but it's also considerably heavier on resources: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/2454/21ad3afd-d4de-46d9-b82d-2f7da1a9a0ef/image.png Of course modern systems have more than enough power to cope with it, but it's still far from optimal from a performance perspective, especially considering it doesn't make program development much easier (except for the people familiar with the languages involved, anyway, but Javascript being an awkward mess is another story altogether).
steam went down for tuesday maintenance nothing special it should be back now, when you opt in the beta, it'll download something then restart, it'll only start actually downloading the beta after you restart, click check for steam client update, wait for it to finish then install and you'll have it
Only thing I dislike is the gradients/shadows.
It might be a bias but honestly it seems like gradients are gradually becoming popular again in design
wish they gave as much of a fuck about curating their storefront than they did about updating their perfectly good chat client with this shit
I'm talking about the animation when you send a message. It choppily scrolls down at like 5 frames per second, and that seems to be how it's designed. I don't think the massive tabs and text are nice to look at, either. That's my opinion though. How skinnable will this interface be?
I want to make it gool ol' olive
has anyone tested out the voice yet? Is it on par with discord?
I like how it looks, needs some improvements though, everything is too big especially on lower resolutions, but I don't like this https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/260169/0c80b3fc-8b90-49ff-b8a8-096629c5b630/image.png why does everything have to use web browsers
They gave us the invisible setting but also in exchange removed the 'busy' status. I don't know who else uses the busy option, but from time to time I do. I hope they bring it back, along with being able to click on people's avatars to go to their profile. I like the changes, but I think that like other people have said, this still has a way to go before it's pushed out to everyone.
Unless valve allows us to edit webkit.css You cannot. Unless you open the client in a real web browser, then you can add whatever you want
Spent quite a bit trying to get the update to work. Turns out I had < 200MB on C:\ Reactivated steam skins Nice, nothing I can't fix though https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1755/e5968105-d19f-4146-9a65-e408f009b0da/image.png
I don't know if I like this... At the top I'd prefer to see the tagged groups I've made instead of games that people are playing.
can't believe steam just chinese-developer'd Discord
does this use panorama or CEF? if not the leader then I'm sad
It will not kill Discord in the long run. Can now scroll back to load up to two weeks of chat history Group chats also keep up to two weeks of chat history
THE AWAY INDICATORS ARE FUCKING ANIMATED https://tenryuu.blob.core.windows.net/astrid/18-06-13_12-39-43.webm nice 👌
why is there no support for embedding .webms
But can you do this? https://tenryuu.blob.core.windows.net/astrid/18-06-13_13-05-47-Steam_Client_Beta.png
i'm 99% sure skinning is going to die with this (shameless plug to an announcement i wrote) https://steamcommunity.com/groups/metroforsteam#announcements/detail/1645384648842466293
Gabe's son said he can't stand the normal client and uses a skin, might be the case for some Valve devs too.
Could just make a custom launcher that ensures the files are in place before launching stream. Wouldn't be that much of a hassle.
Recommend you do this https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1755/0dc930ee-d3af-4e37-93d3-76bc4a243026/image.png
AFAIK can't be done. the file replacement process happens when it's doing the non-styled loading bar. the only possibility would be to somehow modify the files during that small window of time after it finishes bootstrapping but before steam loads, and that's only if steam doesn't cache assets up until that point. if steam's caching assets during that dialog, there's really no getting around this
steam.exe -noverifyfiles you'd lose them on every update though
to me it feels like they're just deciding to go the way of all the other clients and just move to one unified look for everyone
Might not be the best idea since Valve's UX is pretty all over the place, probably because of the UI designers moving projects.
considering that this kinda feels like that rumored UI redesign, i think this might be a good thing
Just sent 25 thousand characters looks like the limit doesn't work https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1755/1e1d04db-7403-49eb-90bf-1ae45432a823/image.png
TF2's party chat used to have no character limit, I crashed my game pasting the Bee Movie script.
