Steam's getting a new chat system: embeds, uploads, better voice chat, and more

You can?
Be careful with your filesize though, I think if you upload a video too big it just quietly rejects it and nothing happens. No errors.
I'm personally loving the the UX of this update.
The only feature I really wanted Steam to have is the ability to paste images directly from the clipboard into chat. I used to have to take a screenshot using alt-prntscrn, paste it into Photoshop, save it out as a file, upload it to Dropbox, navigate to the Dropbox folder, right-click -> Copy Link, and then paste the link.
Now I can just alt-prntscrn and Ctrl-V right into the Steam chat window. So much more convenient.
I'm not a big fan of the UI of this update, though. Everything is so needlessly big, and there's wasted space everywhere. At least I can keep my Steam chat windows separate per person - I was really fearing they'd pull a Discord and slam all of the chats into a single mother panel.
Hopefully we'll get some QoL controls to make the UI more compact. Then this update will be golden for me.
Is there a way to stop it from moving ANY in-game friend up above the group of friends that I made specifically so that my closest friends would always be at the top?
always hitting a commit error when uploading anything
Outside of the favourites area, not yet. I'd expect them to do something about it though
friend hotlinked a .webm from /v/ and it didnt embed
Dammit, I love the metro skin for Steam. This is gonna blow.

this is cool and all but when are they going to fix this

my brother refuses to use anything other than Steam to chat and when it went down during the Nintendo Direct he started using Twitch's whispers to communicate
I know that this is still being worked on but oh my god this is utterly unacceptable in terms of UI design. God damn. How do you fuck up so badly? Is Valve this out of touch with modern design schemes? Nothing makes sense. It's just a hodgepodge of random shit.
The new UI isn't quite as atrocious as I was expecting but it definitely needs some improvements. The group chats section needs to be closable rather than permanently floating at the bottom of the friends window even if you have no group chats going. The in-game section should also appear below any custom groupings of friends.
For chat there definitely needs to be some changes as well. Timestamps shouldn't only appear when you hover over a given message. Embeds should also have an option that turns them into straight links instead. The chat window generally feels like it has too much empty space too. If they removed the padding above tabs and maybe moved avatars into the blank space under usernames when someone sends a message then flatten the tabs a bit I think it'd look better. Some things could do with being moved too. The voice chat button and "add friend to make group chat" button should both be moved up to just below the window controls. This would allow both the chat input as well as the right hand padding in the chat window to be moved all the way to the right instead.
Interestingly they seem to have changed minimum window sizes though. The main library view seems to be a bit wider while the minimum size for chat is much much smaller.
It's because UI designers can come and go as they please.
It sucks since they're just not being nearly as ambitious as I thought they were going to be. It's not that I was expecting an insane redesign from the ground up, but I was expecting more than just an easy reskin of the client. Along with some Discord-like features for chat, which I do appreciate.
I would enjoy this more if I had more friends
Posted this is the feedback forum yet?
So, what is the exploit and how does one avoid it? Can it be avoided?
Nope, I was considering it but with the amount of spam and useless posts in there I get the feeling it would easily get overlooked even if they were actively looking for good feedback.
I posted this and I hope they fix it

This is the default for most chromium applications
It would automatically be 10x better if everything didn't feel so huge
A friend of mine brought up the fact that the option to hide avatars on the friends list is missing
fair point. Has a couple of pages of search results regarding the matter
Can't be avoided, simply fucks up your chat messaging permanently as anyone can send it. They probably have patched it by now, but need to check.
Oh, so it manifests through someone sending you a message?
Yes, but it has been patched just a few minutes ago as I can't crash a person anymore.
What was the exploit though? I'm assuming they were failing to escape things properly or something but it's always interesting to see what these sort of exploits actually entail. Can be a useful learning experience for any programmer.
The message line limit was uncapped, so if you pasted in a message longer than 9999 lines it instantly crashed you and any other people involved either in a friend or group chat (you could kill an entire group chat!).
so is there any reason someone using discord would use this?
i can use easily while in game in steam, its integrated with my steam friends list.
the fact that you need this chat open all the time to get notified by new messages is incredibly annoying unless there's a setting that i missed
I don't like that now I can't copy and paste the entire chatlog and have the timestamp included anymore. I used to save some chatlogs, and whenever I would, pasting it was always
easy, it included the timestamp and everything, and I didn't have to correct any pasting errors like I do now. I just tried pasting it, and a single line took two lines pasting it into a document for some reason.
my only complaint right now is that it's crashed on me 2 times already and I had to restart steam to bring it back
Anyone else getting bad session when they try to upload images?
