• Fortnite accounts used on PS4 are blocked on Switch (and vice versa)

If you want a real answer, Nintendo really has been all for cross play. Hell, Minecraft has an ad that announced Cross play between PC, XBox One, and Switch and Rocket League has also announced cross play between the consoles. If you want to go further, read the warnings that the Switch version of Fortnite gives vs. the PS4 version the switch version mentioned that the account is "associated with a platform which does not allow it to operate on Switch". If Nintendo really didn't care for Cross play, the warning would be more like that of the PS4 version.
More proof of it being Sony is in the games FAQs: If I play Fortnite Battle Royale on Switch, can I squad up with friends on PC, Mac, Xbox and Mobile? Yes, as long as you’ve linked your Switch account to your Epic Games account, you can crossplay with PC, Mac, Xbox and Mobile players.   vs If I play Fortnite Battle Royale on PS4, can I squad up with friends on PC, Mac, and Mobile? Yes, as long as you’ve linked your PlayStation Network account to your Epic Games account, you can crossplay with PC, Mac, and Mobile players.
Ok, I'll remember that next time.
Gross. Restricting cross platform play is the scummiest move used to promote console sales.
Or next time you could try reading the posts made before yours, where people discuss Sony's history of hampering cross-platform play between Sony consoles and other consoles.
i find it hilarious that in order to play on switch with your existing epic account, even if you linked it to the ps4 and never actually played but spent hundreds on the PC version, Epic will revoke all your purchases. I really want some lawyer to challenge that.
But that didn't happen hence why I asked the question. There was no discussion on why it was Sony, everyone just said "It is Sony's fault" and so did the article, but nobody actually said why.
You didn't ask "Why is it Sony's fault?" though, you asked "How do people know it's Sony and not Nintendo?" which was already answered to you before you posted, because Sony hasa history of refusing cross play, as evident with Minecraft and Rocket League.
https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/14/17462932/fortnite-nintendo-switch-block-sony-response-comment ”We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. Fortnite is already a huge hit with PS4 fans, offering a true free-to-play experience so gamers can jump in and play online. With 79 million PS4s sold around the world and more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms.”
Further proving Sony's entire success with the PS4 has been a fluke. They haven't learned a thing from the PS3, they just had the right marketing at the right time. They're just as arrogant as they've ever been since coming out of the PS2 days and they've never cared about the consumer, but they'll flaunt those sales figures all day long. Gen8 was a mistake.
It also helped that Microsoft got way more arrogant, and had an incredibly bad way with explaining what they did (because in hindsight, some of Xbox's controversial features were cool)
It fucking pains me so much that the PS4 now has enough exclusives to color me interested and want to buy a console, while simultaneously absolutely fucking despising everything Sony does as a company. Getting a second hand is out of the question because by experience the ones you find online around my area are always fucked, and the ones in thrift stores are rare and inferior versions.
I have a PS4 and I wish I didn't after how they've been treating consumers.
I wonder if you could spoof a Switch to respond to the servers as a PS4. After all, you just need a paperclip to break into the bootloader.
Microsoft handed them their victory on a silver platter. They didn't do a thing to earn it other than not fucking up in the same way. But they've found plenty of ways to fuck up since, and they are not going to be able to head into the next generation with the same amount of user confidence.
When Xbox got announced, it was a heavy focus on it being an "entertainment" machine, with focus on TV, Media, Always on and etc. The gaming aspect of it got really left behind and the backlash was so great that the Xbox head stepped down and Phil Spencer got in and is now turning the Xbox brand around.
The thing is, though, Sony was planning the exact same things. It was meant to be $500 just like the Xbone, it was meant to make the PlayStation Camera mandatory just like the Kinect (why do you think that stupid lightbar is on the DualShock4?), it was supposed to have the same always-online, anti-used game ecosystem as the Xbone. Sony just had the good fortune of going second that day because they revised their press conference in the mere hours between Microsoft's and theirs, put out a jab video against the Xbone (which was filmed at the expo), and then rode that wave of good will from that single day throughout the entire console generation. And what didn't help is all the game journalists who ate that ploy up and put out tons of articles practically imploring consumers to go with the PS4 this generation. That's why the PS4 managed to eclipse both the other systems almost immediately after launch despite having no compelling games for nearly two years. And funny thing is, it's not like they even kept to their words from that day. If you have PSVR, PlayStation Camera is once again mandatory to use that, but that oh-so-evil Kinect is still dead with its ruined reputation as the "NSA spy camera" (which sucks, because the Kinect is the far better piece of hardware than the PlayStation Camera.) Gen8 was a total wash decided in a single day. It's fortunate that Microsoft has been able to turn the Xbone's fortunes around like this, but... *sigh* #WiiUDiedForYourSins
Do you have any sources on this? Because I have never heard this before, and searching "PS4 was going to be always online" doesn't give any first page hits.
I admit I don't remember exactly where this was mentioned since this was five years ago now. The info may have been spread across multiple sources at that. It was a while ago.
Did some digging. Let's go back in time~ January 2012 Everyone was still enjoying their PS3s and 360s at this time and people could only speculate about the new consoles. The first rumors came out that the successor of the 360, at that time jokingly called the Xbox 720, would not support used games. https://www.wired.com/2012/01/xbox-720-used-games/ https://kotaku.com/5879202/sources-the-next-xbox-will-play-blu-ray-may-not-play-used-games-and-will-introduce-kinect-2 https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/01/how-the-next-xbox-could-stop-you-from-playing-used-games/ --- March 2012. Kotaku reports that the next Playstation would be called 'Orbis', would not be backwards compatible, and would block used games. They claim their information comes from "a reliable source who is not authorized to talk publicly about next-gen hardware but has shared correct information with us before". https://kotaku.com/5896996/the-next-playstation-is-called-orbis-sources-say-here-are-the-details --- January 2013 People discovered that Sony has patented a way to integrate NFC technology into optical discs. Immediately the connection was laid to the used game market. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20130007892.pdf https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-03-sony-patents-tech-to-block-use-of-second-hand-games --- February 2013 Ian Livingstone (persident and CEO of Eidos Interactive, later Square Enix Europe) talked about the next Xbox and their always-on approach. “So they’ve gone halfway,” he added, giving the example of Microsoft’s supposed next-gen approach, “With the next Xbox, you supposedly have to have an internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won’t play on another. So I think the generation after that will be digital-only.” https://web.archive.org/web/20130602105229/http://www.mcvindia.com/news/read/ian-livingstone-talks-next-gen-hints-at-always-on-used-game-blocking-xbox/ Meanwhile, Shuhei Yoshida (head of Sony) confirmed in an interview with Eurogamer that the PS4 will not block used games. No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on. Do you agree, I asked? "Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's my expectation." https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-02-21-sony-tells-eurogamer-playstation-4-will-not-block-used-games https://www.wired.com/2013/02/playstation-4-used-games/ Meanwhile, GameStop is getting worried and is warning Microsoft that blocking used games will harm the game industry. “We know the desire to purchase a next-generation console would be significantly diminished if new consoles were to prohibit playing pre-owned games, limit portability, or not play new physical games,” GameStop spokesman Matt Hodges said. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/gamestop-warns-microsoft-on-rumored-used-game-blocking-console/ https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2013-02-07/gamestop-members-may-snub-next-gen-console-restrictions Meanwhile, Edge reports about more features of the new Xbox, Xbox Live and further confirming that it will block second hand games. Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit. https://web.archive.org/web/20130512071304/http://www.edge-online.com/news/the-next-xbox-always-online-no-second-hand-games-50gb-blu-ray-discs-and-new-kinect/ https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/report-next-xbox-will-use-persistent-net-connection-to-block-used-games/ --- May 2013 IGN reports that the new Xbox will not function without the Kinect attached. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/21/xbox-one-will-not-function-without-kinect-attached https://kotaku.com/xbox-one-requires-kinect-to-function-509112572 --- 10th June 2013 - E3 2013 Microsoft press conference at 4:30pm GMT Sony press conference at 6:00pm GMT The rest is history https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpvdKREKZMs https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/06/analysis-the-one-two-combo-sony-used-to-knock-microsoft-out-of-e3-2013/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2013/06/11/playstation-4s-price-and-policies-humiliate-microsofts-xbox-one-at-e3/#384a2b6133f4 --- Conclusion In my opinion, Sony was very well aware about the slowly forming disgust against the blocking of used games and had planned upon this long beforehand. They had plenty of time to do so, and did not hesitate to take this opportunity. And oh boy did they milk it for what it was worth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSIFh8ICaA
Didn't Xbox also have an ordeal over being against used games and incorporating that into Xbox and Sony did the bare minimum of saying "Hey you can still play used games" to reap off that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70z2jtcQf4s It's discussed in this video, sorry don't remember the timestamp. tldw; Phil Spencer was asked why Sony isn't playing ball on the epic account/crossplay issue and he expressed his disappointment with the situation as well as said Nintendo has been great to partner with.
@ 19:16 they talk about the situation.
