• Arenanet fires two after Twitter incident

maybe the important takeaway is to never talk about work on social media
Talking about work is fine. She called a popular Youtuber and content creator for her companies game a "rando asshat" and gave the impression that she (representing Arenanet) not only ignores player feedback but finds it outright contemptible. At that point they were looking out for their employees when they fired her.
You're right, but we're talking about TotalBiscuit here. TotalBiscuit is fucking dead. There's really not much point in legitimately criticizing his work other than for the sake of being a dick
Like yeah, given the guy's reputation in the community and how big of an influence he is within it, there is an easy case to make that she was actively compromising the studio's standing.
Especially considering this wasn't even the first big community person she shittalked, she did it to another one the day before or so too.
I'm 100% okay with developers firing toxic people like that.
or maybe Don't be a 10th dan donknozzle
jessica had it coming with past incidents, but peter didn't deserve to get whiffed in the crossfire at all. His comment was just 'she didn't ask for a critique', which at its base is true, but not necessary at that point of the riot
This is tuesday in american and canadian AAA dev, esp the more north and west you go. Devs are to the point where any and all criticism is personal, and everything you do is the bestest thing ever omg ~squee~ in a general circle jerk. Pretty much working for the big five is like working for Disney any more, everyone smiles all the time and loves you and you can never leave. https://joannawillis.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/stepford-wives-2004.jpg
So you decided to jump in and defend her without knowing all the details... huh...
What? You cant criticise someone's work because they are dead, lest you be a dick? Im not talking about petty insults because they are that, petty, but legit criticism
Why would you, what's the point? It's not like a dead person will learn and improve from your criticism
'Blocks often' in her bio is a massive red flag
it depends what you're criticizing, if you're criticizing the person himself over something petty yeah, but works someone makes have a degree of independence and are and timeless. TB was a critic himself, i don't think he would have had any problem criticizing a game by a deceased author.
Obviously everything below is just my personal opinion: It's not going to impact anything from that point onward, because the person in question won't be able to take that criticism anyway. They're dead. You're not going to change anything in their work. In some cases, it's borderline cowardice.* Those criticisms could have been raised directly to the person in question when they were still alive. At this point it's not even legitimate criticism - it's just smearing shit on someone's image with the "comfort" of them never being able to respond to the critique and improve upon their flaws. It's about respect for the dead. They're gone from this world - just give them a rest. Otherwise you're showing to everyone that you believe that winning an argument against a fucking corpse somehow validates your existence. *It reminds me of that one case from recent times (unfortunately I cannot remember the names of people involved at all), but some guy shit-talked a writer who had committed suicide out of depression (and it later turned out that the shit-talker had been harboring a grudge for being called out by that writer on making disrespectful jokes). I'll agree that this is tangentially related and counts more as the petty insults part than the legit criticism part, but it still came to my mind in terms of commenting on people only after they've passed.
There is nothing wrong with criticism of a deceased person's works. We still criticize all the classic authors, classic actors and film makers, musicians, all of that. It's not to insult them but to better understand the things they made and use that to help inform future generations in their field. Criticize TotalBiscuit's style to give the next person who steps in to that role a more informed view of the works that came before them.
It's not modern feminism, it's tumblr feminism. Modern feminism is the same feminism it's always been, about equality.
You're saying this like she was criticizing his work. She wasn't. She was saying that he was a terrible person and she was glad he was dead.
I've been thinking about this more and I'm actually getting more angry about it. There are people trying to spin this as "random dude harasses dev on personal twitter" when the tweet in question was entirely respectful! If you want to post things on the Internet and not get them criticized or talked about, just do a goddamn blog with no comments instead of essentially making an open thread on a forum that anyone can respond to, and get uppity about responses.
Seems a bit of an overreaction on ANet's part, I feel like this will just embolden idiots on twitter/reddit to spin up some mob justice on any random bullshit now. She was being a bit of an idiot, but tbh this feels like if Platinum decided to fire Kamiya over his twitter.
The problem is Peter Fries didn't disrespect anyone that I can tell (he deleted his shit so who knows) and got sacked after a very very long time at the company. JP is a premium whale gold deluxe package shitbird with a literal day one history of being utterly unable to take any kind of criticism, no surprises there, but Fries losing his job is kind of crazy, unless he voluntarily quit on his own.
Arenanet's response is absolutely dumb but not nearly as fucking idiotic as the legion of morons who are acting like she was totally, completely, unambiguously in the right.
Arenanet's response is perfectly fitting. As I said, she attacked a major pillar of the community and source for marketing and reputation. And she has done it to more than just him. Causing damage to the company's reputation and arguably company resources in the form of it's community connections is entirely reasonable grounds for being fired. And likely if Peter Fries was also fired for this then there is something he did people haven't seen, plausibly something within the company.
I'm glad she's no longer around to keep doing harm.
Deroir was just the first one. She also attacked another community contributor, INKS, later when he asked her how what Deroir said was disrespectful. https://twitter.com/MMOINKS/status/1014282629036769280 You'll have to go to the tweet to get the full chain looks like.
https://twitter.com/Delafina777/status/1014302371805986816 Damn what a psychopath. Someone needs to delete their Twitter.
What the hell is it with people in the video game industry acting like that? Every company worth its salt in any other industry schools its employees on things like these during onboarding - do's and don't's regarding any kind of public statement, social media in particular. Ideally, it shouldn't even cross someone's mind to bring company business into private social media, especially when it's related to such unceremonious matters. You just don't do that. It's just such an abhorrent lack of professionalism and work ethic, I find the frequency of such occurrences mind-boggling. Even more surprising is how it seems that in each circumstance, the company behind the person in question scarcely does anything about their employees behaviour.
Doesn't help that VICE is already spinning this to be a "gamers don't have to be your audience" thing and that it was wrong to fire her for her "opinion". Who's up for Gamergate 2.0?
To be fair Kamiya's told us to ask Hashimoto about bayo2 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 TIMES.
You already got some other (games) journalist on the topic. https://twitter.com/Quinnae_Moon/status/1015105536029798400?s=19 Open the tweet for the whole chain. (She is mostly talking about Peter though, which should have probably not been fired.) This whole thing is currently circulating all kinds of "troll" subreddits and places, for both sides, people who side with the "feminism" side and ones cheering the "pussypass denied" side. Katherine Cross is actually already jumping on those troll replies (last tweet in that chain). Fallout will be quite the internet shitfest as with many things on this topic even though this incident is pretty clear on both sides. Jessica Price deserved it for being a shitty without reason, she caused a massive PR disaster with a well respected GW2 partner completely unprovoked, Peter Fries got caught in the crossfire but its still partly his fault for defending her ridiculous claim, unlike Jessica who was only there for a year he should have gotten some strong warning or so. To say it blatant, Jessica is pretty insane, thinking her public Twitter is private and nobody, especially not somebody who isn't working in her area, is qualified to give any criticism. She has a huge history of being blatant disrespectful. Here another of the tons of "femnazi tumblr" like replies given to people: https://twitter.com/Delafina777/status/991198656266059779 https://twitter.com/Delafina777/status/991199451287990272
