Honestly, I think at this point someone at ANet needs to make a statement about this to try and stem the flow.
As much as it'd be selling either Price or Fries down the river, I seriously doubt it was just this discourse that got them the boot. Maybe if they actually explained that the zeitgeist would turn in the other direction.
It's like, I still don't really agree with the firing? I think what JP said was out of line and a bit of a public meltdown, but it should probably been a case of being asked to step back for a bit and come back and apologize-
but that's the THING isn't it? There's so many people giving out hot takes about this that think that they DON'T need to apologize! And I don't get that at all!
You never explain why you fired someone. It's unnecessary and lawsuit bait.
This is really standard procedure in any industry.
I have the feeling looking at her personality that she was given the offer to publicly apologize, but refused.
Yeah, this alone, even though it's rude, seems more like something worth a slap on the wrist than a straight firing.
Then again, as has been mentioned, she may have already been in trouble before with stuff like her TotalBiscuit reaction. And maybe they did ask her to apologize, but she refused. Maybe the guy did something similar, like saying he'd leave to stand with her, or yelling at the person telling her to apologize.
Or maybe Arenanet fired them just like that in order to save public face, and to not deal with such discussions for fear of managers or the company getting hit with a sexism lawsuit.
I kinda feel bad about this whole situation because I sorta get where she's coming from. I'm nowhere near that public, and you know she is getting actual abuse and sexism hurled her way right now even after the firing, but I kinda know what it's like to be at work and have abuse hurled at you and your coworkers and you just have to smile and take it. Sometimes a customer might come in and not be hostile but they just do something that annoys you and after a long day there's a part of you that wants to snap at them. So I feel bad for her in that regard, because she probably gets it worse than me.
At the same time, if I acted half that bad I'd be canned too. What do you do as a company if your employees are acting like that? You kinda have no choice. You can't just start talking shit on your customers no matter how right you think you are.
People dont have a big problem with you just being uninformed, its your attitude when they point it out, you kept arguing over it even when the information was already available in the very thread you decided to post in and you couldnt just go "oh, woops" and move on. Look at you right now, you're still arguing, for what? over what? Whats the point of what you're doing right now? Throwing little witty zingers around? Who are you trying to dunk on? You're not doing anything right now other than act stubborn and obnoxious.
if this was a dude sayin dont tell me how to do my job w/o the woman part and just got fired yall weirdos would be kissing his ass and bending over backwards to make him a martyr lmao
never change nerds
do you have anything to back this up or do you just take pleasure in spewing out bullshit?
What is this post lmao, get over yourself.
That's kinda what I suspect why the other dev was fired too.
You normally wouldn't lay off someone who's been with the company for over ten years if there wasn't some big internal issue in addition to his tweets (or at least that's what I'd do).
Except thats exactly what Phil Fish did and he's a laughing stock so good job trying to dunk on everyone.
As an active GW2 player, it being in all these news outlets in this capacity is a bit...saddening. Oh well.
phil fish got fired from his own company? damn. phil fish must really hate phil fish to fire phil fish. lol
The Point
your head
phil fish had stupid twitter freakouts b/c of criticsm and no one really pays attention to him anymore.
Yes.
He did exactly that.
Like even ignoring the point i made, you're still wrong, because thats still exactly what he did.
Chronic ironism in posts and lack of acceptance to argue in good faith
why are y'all falling for the most obvious bait in history
i mean that's may as well be what happened
I mean, sorta?
I can kind of get her perspective. Its easy to just look at one instance and be all upset that she flew off at the handle or whatever, but I'm sure these people "in the know" get a ridiculous number of messages like this on a fairly regular basis, and probably many of them not as polite or well-thought out of like this. I know in my own job it can get extremely tiring having people constantly trying to rebuttal you on every little niggling thing, especially when you believe you're in the right. I can get finally getting to the point of mouthing-off to criticism when you're facing it on a very regular basis. What we saw here is probably the result of annoyance that has been long brewing.
So then don't post on a medium that encourages response and discussion. If you're fed up with people questioning and debating everything you say, don't give them an outlet to do so.
Is this shaping up to be Gamergate 2.0 with journos going full white knight for this cunt despite all that transpired? For someone who fucking spit on TotalBiscuit's grave?
Those "journalists" have no sense of decency. Why the fuck do people keep reading their tripe?
nvm my hot take, here's a goddamn hot take.
If that's the case, why blow up on what's most probably the most polite criticism she's received? That makes no sense.
What's more probable is that she's a sheltered bully that's used to being praised regardless of the quality of her work and she saw an opportunity to abuse someone who was unlikely to strike back.
She's been fired from Microsoft and Paizo for doing the same exact thing she did here, so no harm no foul frankly.
It's amazing how bad of a look this is for a lot of games journalists. Even most of Resetera is in agreement that Jessica Price's twitter was a cesspool, and aren't buying the spin that Kotaku and other outlets are trying to put on this story. I mean, the woman called people who liked Infinity War "fuckers" for absolutely no reason - and that's just on example of the vitriol she was spewing. She clearly had her firing coming for a while, with how unprofessionally she was conducting herself in public. Insulting a respected member of the community for the very game she was working on was just the last straw.
all of this drama over one overly sensitive asshole
jesus christ, what the fuck is wrong with people
Because if you're already being pushed to the point where minor criticism is bugging you that much, it becomes incredibly easy to also look at said criticism and assume that the writer is feigning politeness.
Its like those people that say "with all due respect" and then follow it with something disrespectful.
what the hell are you talking about
I hope not, because the result of last time was a lose-lose for everybody, with professional victims like the subject of this thread receiving undeserved praise and being enshrined as angels despite being some of the most toxic people in existence, while the alt-right gained massive amounts of traction and support from the general public, especially gamers. It's not a coincidence that most big alt-right figures of today were also prominent pro-GG people, or that there's always these weird controversies about female protagonists or homosexuality whenever a new game with such a subject comes out. (see Battlefield V or The Last of Us 2 for example)
Because that's not how discussions work. Furthermore, has that ever worked?
