I feel Vietnam would've been a more appropriate example.
You do know who the Soviet Union were right?
i'm pretty sure she's either dead or locked up somewhere will nobody will ever find her
Ehh, even then Vietnam was not a war won by insurgency. It was won by the North Vietnamese Army and foreign "agricultural advisors," and lost by the USAF and ARVN having abysmally poor morale.
the world feels like it's quickly becoming one of those "kill or be killed" movies
Current state in China is really unnerving.
The Chinese Democratic party got thrown in jail for 12-13 years for "harming state securities" and elections got no power to remove the current government.
The Chinese government use the term "western democracy" to separate their authoritarian regime from real democracy and usually blames the west (Mostly US) for their many flaws.
This has lead to nutjobs attacking anyone who looks like a foreigner and will have bad consequences in the future.
Also, this year the Chinese President Xi Jinping has 'freed' himself of term limits.
I'm kinda scared of what China will turn into.
(Fun fact: Zimbabwe is a more democracy country than China)
I'll take "mass defection caused by a military's inability to kill its own people" for $500, Alex.
I'm pretty sure the US Military has already prepared for it considering Jade Helm
What's the point of having guns to topple the government if the army are the ones who'll end up having to do it anyway?
If you truly think they won't be willing to fire on armed citizens, why would they be willing to do it on unarmed ones?
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have. If the military becomes conditioned to killing its own citizens and unarmed civilians, theyll be less likely to defect, ala Syria. Plus defection of individuals and a coup on a mass level are two different things.
Never said they would be willing to fire on armed or unarmed civilians. My point is that any military, in the state of the US's, isn't going to be happy about slaughtering its own people and mass defection would become a thing rather quickly. Nobody wants to kill the people theyre sworn to protect.
Sure but at this point it's less a tool to topple tyranny and more of a tool for self-preservation while fleeing the country.
I think you underestimate the power of brainwashing. Even right now a lot of American citizens are openly racist and Latino immigrants are dehumanized by the government. After a while and given the direction your nation is taking it's not out of the realm of possibility that a sizeable portion of the military would eventually have no qualms with shooting and killing citizens they feel aren't really "American" (read: white).
A) that won't happen if the military is the one to initiate a coup, which happens kind of a whole fuckin' lot whenever totalitarian dictatorships are involved.
B) officials sanctioned by the US government already have willingly committed acts of violence towards fellow citizens.
C) dictatorships are known to purge elements of dissent and replace them with more compliant figures. If the US were to turn full totalitarian they would begin by slowly but surely removing any "undesirables" from the army and other places of power, including political circles, the police and the judiciary system.
china is striving to bring the dystopia to you!
Hmm, you seem to be treating the US military as unfeeling machines, of which noone would defect or sabotage operations when told to shoot the people they used to protect. Dumb.
Been discussed before. The US army isn't "unfeeling machines", it's made of citizens, the same citizens who can be manipulated and pushed and influenced to do certain things so long as they believe it's the right thing. Totalitarian dictatorships, especially the ones that last, are built on the foundations that the majority believe it is either a good thing or a necessary evil.
The military may not be willing to attack its citizens now but that's not something you can take for granted. It is that way because the democratic system is still sturdy enough to sustain that, but the US is currently at a point where government mandated officials are being allowed to restraint people in concentration camp, and those same soldiers you claim are incapable of wronging their own people are still willing to maintain a military base on foreign soil dedicated to torture away from prying eyes.
I would go out on a limb and say most gun owners wouldn't flee. Its heavily inscribed in American culture to not put up with government Tyranny. Most would stay and fight even if it was in vain.
I'm aware of what conditioning is, I mentioned it in my post. Youre overestimating the amount of racists in the country and associating it with the type of hate that leads to murder.
There are a lot of casual racists in the country, but not the types to start or support a genocide. Even with the current ICE camps, very few people actually think theyre a good thing. Most people who support Trump tend to push blame off of him and onto Obama for enacting the legislation but never enforcing it. They dont like the camps but support Trump for enforcing the law. Its completely fuckin bonkers but thats the way its been justified to me by many people. Point being, there are racists in this country but the situation has to devolve a lot further for their to be open support for mass murder.
The military of all places is one of the most diverse "work" forces in the US. Most understand skin color means jack shit and I doubt many would follow orders to kill US civilians without years of Nazi esque conditioning.
Lmao I don't think US will be any different from other countries with civil wars.
in what situation are we gonna nuke our own country lmao
