Unless the repository is for something totally unknown or just unsupported any more someone, somewhere will have a clone of the thing on a machine. That can be rehosted and pointed to by anyone else in the future.
Github is pretty centralised sure, but the technology its based on is designed to cope with multiple points of failure.
