Steam Pushes Interface Update to Release, Millions Disgusted

Valve's UI's, particularly in TF2 and Steam, have always been inconsistent.
I like it, but it should've been worked on more, probably way too early to release this out of beta.
You can get through an entire web design college course without looking at a line of code thanks to things like Dreamweaver
The invisibility status is the best fucking thing we have gotten in years, what the fuck are you on about?
You can now join and let people join you, even if you are offline.
I use metro too, but it died a few months back. There are some other people continuing to work on it though it seems.
Why did you try and frame the thread to be a Valve hate train from the start even though clearly the views on the chat are at least mixed leaning positive
every1 wants to be like smurfy
I CAN'T HANDLE CHANGE
The compact friends list options are good but fucking hell the chat buttons are massive, why do they have to be so big? Huge fucking blocks and the text box where you type is massive as well.
Not electron
Steam's been using CEF forever, this is nothing new. Just updated
It's got flaws but I like it. I'll miss Pixelvision though.
how can I remain offline in my friends list?
A redesigned steam client has been known to be in the works for a long time.
The new UI is consistent with valve's present ideals in ui design. Currently the steam client has to work with it's limits of being VGUI. Work to make the current client consistent would be useless if a completely new client is in the pipeline. And making the chat system look like the old platform would make it a wasted time since there's of course it would not be consistent as to what's to come.
Just turn on invisible and leave it that way, the next time you log in you'll remain offline. The same goes for away/online statuses.
lol

You think far too hard about the most contextually trivial things.
Why would 50 year old billionaires give the slightest fuck about M$ UI design philosophy.
So, long story short, when my friend opened chat window steam opened 2 windows - old chat and new chat. And all messages you write into an old chat go into the new chat.
Just think of it - it looks like when you open new chat steam opens hidden classic chat window and uses it to receive and send messages. That's what I call high quality programming.
Well this will probably stop me from using discord.
I appreciate that they support both docked and undocked chat.
I normally run it undocked, since I'd have this setting on the edge of one of my displays somewhere. I don't tile windows at all, so all the chat windows just fly about

Well, nowadays they want stuff to run on websites and in the client, while looking and feeling the same.
Discord, Skype, they all do the same, now steam as well.
Its still acceptable, at least from an user point of view in my opinion. If the design itself works or not is open question.
Whats worse is when different devices try to look the same, often for the dismay of PC users.
Win10 new settings windows are a good case, they are not only shitty convoluted but also follow tablet/mobile design which is mostly shit to use on a PC.
Tried the design during its beta, its alright, kinda liked the old more though.
Tiny things that slightly annoy me, like the extra clicks needed to get to profiles of people from the friends list instead clicking the avatar.
In terms of redesigns of other websites or things, this is far from a trainwreck that happened in other places.
Is there any way to have it show my categorised friends at the top over games, I have a few mates tagged so they'd always show up at the top and now it's just showing me which fucker is playing GTA 5 there instead =/
It's still alive, although you have to find it in their Steam Community group to download it
I know it's been established that Steam doesn't even use Electron, but adding on to that topic:
IIRC there's actually a lot more options for web developers that want to make desktop apps, but it's just that Electron won the popularity contest on GitHub, so to speak, and it so happens that it's the repo that runs off the same engine Chrome uses. It's really just unfortunate all around.
Any way to make the friends list/chat run faster? Currently I'm constantly experiencing freezes, slowness and it is using nearly 1 GB of RAM, its nearly impossible to use it and I'm forced to use the browser version.
Isn't Steam itself still built on old GoldSrc UI code anyway?
I don't like how it doesn't remember what I set the chat windows to now.
I used to have them all open at one size but now any new chat opens in the middle of my screen, massive.
Most my friends have almost entirely switched to Discord for general chatting. I liked using the Steam messenger still, just out of familiarity. This is the push I'll need to finally embrace Discord.
I've been using Metro for Steam for years, and now that it's not working, I'm fucking shocked at how horrible the default Steam UI is. Just glowy gradients all over the place, no sense of consistency in design, just an absolute fucking mess. Literally looks like it's borrowing design trends from 2006 Xfire. They should've adopted Metro years ago.
Also why the fuck does it not stack with the icon on the taskbar anymore

Oh man so many
We lost ctrl+f, and the search bar doesn't hide itself when you press enter
hovering your own profile doesn't give it a flyout
Minimising the window while there's a profile flyout keeps it up (win+down)

recently they fucked up so that some commands are being sent as text messages

AND THIS SHIT

I'm unsure if they fixed this one that like no one in the industry fixes. No one tests touch screens

It's like they can't actually analyse feedback, they have too much of an influx of messages on the feedback forum and none of this shit gets fixed.
Ship it? what the fuck
nice job valve!!!!!
it's a shame you're a few years late and this is nowhere as good as discord
