Steam Pushes Interface Update to Release, Millions Disgusted

mind if i ask, what's the big difference between using this and discord beyond split windows
I love the new UI.
It's running on slightly upgraded version of Source-era VGUI. That doesn't make it less shit tho.
Been in the Beta for this for a while
It's an improvement in a bunch of ways
Personally I like the old one but I'll try to get used to this one.
If the library is a webapp, would I be able to see my library while in offline mode?
When you press enter, instead of sending the message, it just moves to the next line. That's gonna get really annoying.
The whole userbase will probably do a better job at pushing back on the things that need to be changed than us weirdos who were using the beta right away.
There are things I don't like but honestly displaying images right in the window is just too good.

THIS IS THE SAME OS, BOYS
URL's embed the image in the chat automatically but gifs aren't animated. What's the point, that's like the worst of both worlds.
So I was digging around the "Store Preferences", there's some stuff for hiding/showing "violence and sexual content". Is there any chance this means I won't have to keep entering my birthdate to see trailers? Doesn't quite sound like it but I'd really like it to be an option.
Oh man, they're even pulling the Microsoft thing where half the text rendering is just greyscale and the other actually respects your cleartype settings.
How the hell do they not notice that?
Isn't/wasn't there a way to disable the friends list grouping by game?
Asking for a friend who hates change and hates Googling things.
That's not sarcasm.
Group chats take forever to load up.
But in beta steam they load up instantly as they did before the new chat release.
Oh for fucks sake, it looks like it doesn't even respect your settings across all your monitors and just uses the ones for your main one.

Why specifically show people playing Gungeon/Wallpaper Engine over other games? Why did they remove the Snooze status? Why can't I permanently remove the Group Chats popup clinging to the bottom permanently like an unwanted tumor? It's like they take a step in the right direction and then 2 steps back with dumb decisions.
Good to see playing youtube videos in chat during in-game overlay is still broken and crashes. Had this same problem back in the beta and was hoping that'd be fixed by release.

You can't spell consistent without saying Windows.
I still love Windows though, but jeez some cleanup would be nice.
wasnt cef just used for webpages though, not things like the library and chat?
Yup, And big picture too
There was a single beta update of steam that had a library view for HTML. It was only in the VGUI and had no code for it whatsoever
You still can't use the new chat in Big Picture mode.
Why in the everloving fuck does the new friends list put "In Game" above everything else? I specifically created a new category for the friends I talk to the most often so they'd always be at the top and easy to find, now you go and fuck with that?
And why are the buttons for send message, add emoji and add attachment four times the size of the mouse cursor? They look awful and waste so much space. Same with the padding on the left and right sides of the actual chat.
When the same person sends a message more than once in a row, they merge together. When you go in game, it retroactively changes your name to green on the color of every message you sent, and then back to blue when you come out of game. What were they thinking with this update?
Is there a way to put custom friend categories above the ingame category?
What's wrong with that?
I'm not a fan of the design at all but I can get past that, these changes to the categories and the chat buttons however annoy the fuck out of me.
Sure, you can at the very least put friends in that top thing but it's not the same.
I'm quite liking the UI update.
It could use a few more tweaks, but it's so much better than what we had before.
lmao no it's not
panorama is a from-the-ground-up UI engine. it does not use HTML, but XML instead. it does not implement the fuckhuge HTML/CSS standard and renders with opengl/directx/vulkan. it's very performant and yes uses Javascript.
and no, the chat is full-on Valve's fork of CEF.
I know that but afaik skins don't work with the new UI. Or at least they get very messed up.
jesus why are there all these game categories now at the top of my friends list lol. how do i disable that garbage
It makes timestamps completely useless and makes it impossible to have any sense of when messages were actually sent. It's like they're purposefully making it difficult to look back at chat logs, removing all context.
