The problem is that iot devices have a stunningly shit track record for security, they're insanely vulnerable, and there's a shitload of them, making them stupidly easy botnet targets. And boy howdy, have they been targeted.
as addressed by the post you quoted, this is not an inherent flaw with the concept as addressed by the article, these rely on bluetooth and thus can't be used for botnets unless you want to claim that someone will hack the pants as a means of breaching the phone app to hijack the phone, which is getting ridiculous
