Take that BMW monstrosity out of here.
Every single X model is a sin against nature.
people buy it = it cant be shit is a terrible logic.
There are some truly HIDEOUS cars that are bought buy a lot of people, doesn't mean that they're good.
Examples of said cars? Interested if I share the same opinion on them haha
hideous:

just downright terrible cars in terms of build quality and reliability: Holden/Chevy Captiva, FCA group, modern nissan in general, modern mitsubishi in general, anything with cvt
These are all cars I see relatively frequently where I live and they're an eyesore and are pure garbage.
You aren't really giving any examples of things being objectively bad, just that you don't like said cars. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them bad.
some people think the pt cruiser is a good looking car, doesn't mean it is. I've seen more people call the Juke a hideous piece of garbage than not, for example.
If you want an example of objectively bad design selling well, look at the Ford Pinto. 2.6 million Pinto's were sold between 1970 and 1977. While it's flammability is often exaggerated, it does have serious problems with the fuel tank and drivetrain. It is not a good car, yet it sold quite well.
Another example is the Trabant 601. When it was new, it wasn't bad. But it didn't really age well. They manufactured and sold them until 1990 for a total of 2.8 million. Compared to any other 80's car, it was objectively bad. Yet it sold well.
I dunno man, I like the new Discovery, new Pajero Sport and the new Murano. Too bad about the X6, the first iteration was pure sex. But again I'm one of those people who drool at the sight at a new Civic so here's that
Also, hardly any of those cars can be named compact CUV except for the Juke
Were people aware when it was sold though?
Yeah, very much. About the Pinto, Time and Mother Jones covered it in their magazines, NHTSA launched two investigations on it and there were several press interviews about it. The NHTSA investigations were launched in response to customer complaints.
first iteration of the X6 looks like a morbidly obese 6 series
Front of the discovery looks nice but the back looks dumb, the gap between the taillights and the bumper is ridiculously huge.
I wasn't talking about Compact CUVs, I meant cars in general.
The problem with the styling of the BMW X series models is the intake grilles. They are hideously, disproportionately large on the X series models. Same with the new 8 series, too.
I’m also of the opinion that BMW styling is seriously lacking (some elements are too complicated, and other elements are too arbitrary) compared to the relatively simple, clean and natural styling of Alfas and Mercs.
Pretty much this. You need to compare the model 3 to higher end Ford Fusions/Mondeos and other midrange sedans, not the 3-series or C class. Wasn't the whole idea of the Model 3 to be a more affordable everyman's electric sedan? It doesn't seem to make sense to compare it to bimmers and mercs.
This all seems more like selectively picking specific cars in order to make it look like the Model 3 is crushing the competition, regardless of the reality and reasoning of the situation.
The Model 3 specifically targets the BMW 3 series. A Ford Mondeo doesn't compare in anyway whatsoeve.
Why doesn't it make sense to compare them to BMW and Mercedes? They both start at the same price.
On a slightly off topic note, the guy who put a Model S motor in a Lotus Evora has got a non performance RWD Model 3 working without traction control, and stability control. He set a new record on a track, edging out an M3 by 2 seconds.

I don't really care for sedans to begin with and if I had the money to get a Merc or other European vehicle, I'd rather have a Ford truck. Tesla's are the first sedans I really care about. Though if I absolutely had to get a European car I'd probably get an Audi. The Gulia is pretty cool looking, too. I don't care for BMW or VW at all. Mercs are nice but are boring to me. I'd buy European sports cars but that's getting into a different kind of car all together.
Tesla's are new and interesting, while they do have some quirks, it's nothing that doesn't change what the car is.
European car people already don't consider American cars as good cars, and they don't think electric cars are real cars, so an American electric car is something offensive to them. Tesla will never be a Real Car™ to them.
