Kevlar loses its strength over time due to the chemical compound that makes it degrades over time and it loses its' rated strength.
cops basically pay to store military equipment that won't see any use outside of parades
To the people rating disagree on this: high risks jobs almost always carry higher pay. Even jobs that are functionally easy, unlike being an officer. Being an officer has always been high risk, but even moreso in the US's current political climate. Police officers deserve a decent wage.
I suppose $15/hr isn't really 'great', that's a bit of a strong word for it, but it wouldn't be the worst pay unless you're doing it solo or don't have enough hours.
Ya. A steady $15/hr with a consistent 40 hours per week is more or less what I'd call the minimum to qualify as a "livable wage".
Pennsylvania is having a crisis regarding this right now, several small towns and scrapping their own PD's to free up budget, and get free coverage from the State Police. The State Police can't just not cover the town, so their coverage expands to include that town, which eats up their resources and budget. Many small towns are doing this, and it's causing problems at the state level. Due to the odd little fact that the State Police share a budget with the Department of Transportation, the increased burden on the troopers is cutting into road construction and maintenance. So the State Police are covering more ground, having to expand to cover entire towns, eating up the budget, and now less road work is being done. The State Police themselves aren't very happy with this, and there's debate in the state congress over how to solve the issue. One solution was to impose a hefty tax on towns that have no police force, so that "free" police coverage is no longer free nor appealing. Of course, the opposition to that is the standard 'taxes are bad'.
What prestige
From what I’ve heard, it might be closer to one or two on patrol at a time, with others on call just in case. but yeah, we do have a lot of seasonal residents in the summer.
Bankrupt the state police, pave way for privately owned security teams and police forces. Cyberpunk folks.
Yea but a town with 1,400 people in it doesnt have the going ons that LA gets.
ballistic kevlar degrades to a point they can't be confident it will always work. in virtually every other application it is not an issue. A tragic example would be the zylon vest scandal a while back where the manufacturer was claiming they were good for far longer than they actually were getting a lot of officers killed
I'm not sure about that part, I just know the reason why the sale was made. Outside of that, I have zero idea.
I mentioned this, but still. If anything /did/ happen, they're SOL until the national guard shows up, which would likely be too late for anything. Better safe than sorry, no?
$15/hr is a fucking disgrace... and imagine, this has been the starting wage for Detroit Police officers for the last 5 years, and as far as I know, still is. Maybe it's 16 by now, who knows. Still not enough for what they put up with day-to-day.
Seems like a fucking great place to set up any sort of illegal operation. I mean, who's going to stop you?
American values at work.
So North Dakota is considered one of the more rural states in the nation, right? There is a town there called Leith with a population of 34 people. In 2012 or 2013 a bunch of white nationalists came down from Canada and effectively tried to annex the town and tried to turn it into a white nationalist meca because land was so cheap there. Fortunately state police stepped in and arrested the leader for terrorizing an interacial couple in the town before the plan went into full swing. If this is the worst thing thats happened to a small town in the most rural state in the country, what do you think might happen to the town in the OP? (If you know of any hairbrained plots like that, please let me know. I find that kind of thing interesting) "Assault on Precinct 13" isnt something that happens in real life, and even if it did state police could be mobilized pretty quickly. Massachusetts is an incredibly small state, so any SHTF situations can be reacted to rather quickly.
Probably the fact that everyone in the town knows everyone else and having a crew of people move in suspiciously would be a big red flag
I mean that's cool and all, but what would civvies do anyway?
Tbh this is one thing you see a lot that technically isn't true. Police work statistically is pretty damn safe, stuff like farming, roofing, construction work, and even just trucking are much more dangerous by workplace fatalities. Yeah, certainly. You can't compare policing a small-town to a large city.
For one, call the state police who would rofl stomp somebody's ass because state policemen are bored off their asses 99% of the time. Seriously, this is a small town in Massachusetts, http://ontheworldmap.com/usa/state/massachusetts/massachusetts-location-on-the-us-map-min.jpg Seriously, that little red blip is the state we're talking about. This town isn't in rural Montana or Wyoming where having no police might actually spell trouble. The next town over to Blandford is 10 miles away and theres 40,000 people who live in that town. I live in North Dakota and there are literally dozens of towns in this state that have no police or sheriff presence in them. People are not killing each other because theres no one there to stop them; society doesn't just lose its mind just because an authority disappears.
As someone living in New England, I can tell you that an empty town in Mass is going to be a wonderful warehouse for any illicit operation. We're not talking about the town deciding to do their favorite remake of Road Warrior - but now it's far easier to set up even a storing operation, because as long as it's not getting in anyone's way, no one's going to check any of the suspicious traffic or associated people. Basically, it produces a nice safe house location.
That's because the authority isn't gone, just further away. You're more at risk when a crime is happening, but the aftermath isn't much different. Police will come from out of town to investigate the crime, and if it's a serious crime like murder, there's a good chance of it being solved. So the deterrent is still there.
Power, phones and internet didnt leave with the police. State police still exist and so do county sheriffs. The cartel arent going to invade the town and setup a meth factory. Youre hilariously overreacting.
oh and fun fact! it looks like this town would be easily accessible for state police based on the fact that a fucking Interstate Highway cuts right through the center, right? https://i.imgur.com/1iBZfB9.png well take a look at what fucking happens if you try to get to Blandford from that stretch of I-90: https://i.imgur.com/xdxGCzP.png granted, there may be service access that Google can't show, but holy fuck, you have to figure that it's going to take even the state police a long fucking time to get out there
No one's building a fucking coke mansion in the middle of a Massachusetts nowheretown. We're talking about a viable safe house location due to decreased police activity.
to all the people who think that Massachusetts somehow can't harbor an extensive and elaborate illegal operation: try googling "Whitey Bulger" and read em and fucking weep the mob is still active out there, and still has their hands in a LOT of shit. trust me when I say that when something like this pops up, you can bet your ass there is going to be a little buzz in the underground about it. I'm not saying they're gonna build a Pablo Escobar compound out there in Blandford, but seriously people, do not be surprised if you have some rather important individuals paying off a few staties to make their patrols relatively short and sweet. it's the type of place you'd see some under-the-table bars opening up for sure.
My small town is near the turnpike. There's definitely at least two service roads nearby, presumably so service station and state employees can get to their workplace through some method other than a massive, winding drive like this. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/109677/964afea3-40d8-4a1a-afd2-d3f61ab9359d/image.png Here's a pair of service roads for the blanford service plaza (pictured in your images). From Turnpike Service Rd it is a 3 minute drive to the town hall. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/109677/2021b3cf-7240-486f-b20c-b5a6e204c829/image.png Further east there's a State Police building on a 7/8 minute drive from Blandford depending on their route. Perfectly fine.
A "safe house" lol. They would have already put one up if that were the case because there was only 4 cops working there. This isnt a movie dood, the cartel isnt coming in and installing a ~safehouse~ because 4 cops quit.
