Trans Activists are hijacking the Lobster Emoji till they add a Trans flag Emoji

IDK I don't actually agree with it. But that's the stated concern.
LOL how hard would it be embedding a fucking image wherever a social media site allows it instead of cramming all the dumb emoji into every text field like a child.
I don't think anyone can be taken seriously over some petty shit like this.
And since a ton of mobile phones and operating systems don't get updates for silly unicode sugar, we'll end up in a lot of inconsistencies whenever you want to change a thing. Text rendering wasn't made for rapidly changing standards, and all of the graphical representation of emojis are left to the font makers. Web browsers could work around it (and some websites already have a workaround), but it will always be a hack. It could have been avoided by specifying and demanding that a set of unicode codepoints (in our case emojis) to be handled by a central repository on the web where the operating system/software would go to download the graphics for a certain emoji and it would look everywhere the same. Vendors wouldn't agree with this approach, because then it wouldn't fit the look&feel of the operating system, think Apple or Microsoft. There may lie some usability, security, and performance risks with it, so probably that's why this approach wasn't the choice back in the day.
A can of worms was already opened with skin colors and flags.
You may say the medium is evolving with how people are using it, but I don't think the direction is good.
Trans people face a pretty different set of challenges compared to the other groups, you can see this pretty easily just by looking at the disparity between gay rights and trans rights, and more broadly by looking at how well-accepted each group is in society.
I'm personally of the (maybe unpopular) opinion that the addition of things like male and female emojis and the skin tone modifiers were the biggest mistake that the Unicode Standard ever made.
Not bashing other genres or other colours, but the beauty of emojis were their simplicity. Everyone is bright yellow. Everyone is the same. We are all people. Period.
And people will continue to be unhappy until the Unicode Standard will be updated to include a HEX code color picker that anyone to pick any color they want for haircolor, eye color, clothing and everything. They've opened a can of worms.
Because the stupid public pays attention to intentionally click bait bullshit and there’s a lot of people who will defend that despite the fact it’s clearly harming us
I thought the rainbow flag was the trans flag in essence.
this is a bad post. there's nothing wrong with emoji's. just because memesters use them ironically doesn't mean they're not useful tools in typed communication.
also stop using the word ghetto to describe shit like this, you're basically saying emoji's are for minorities who live in poor areas with other minority groups.
Emojis, in general, were a mistake
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_symbols#LGBT_pride_flag_gallery
There's a number of different flags for different subgroups. Though most of those are actually fairly uncommon. The rainbow flag is most common but is almost entirely used for non-heterosexual preferences. Since gender identity and sexual preference aren't really the same thing the flag doesn't often get used in regards to transgenderism, the pastel pink/blue/white flag is typically used there.
it would take them like 5 minutes to add a trans flag. there really is no reason not to do it
you can say "but there might be too many emojis!!" but listen if they have room for obscure japanese food emojis theres room for a couple pride flags
I dunno, can you make a list of all the flags that would fall under this category? If we allow a sexual/gender identity category, do we allow racial identity? religious identity (there may already be religious symbols though...)
I struggle to understand why there needs to be a flag for each of them, when in all honesty, this just hurts the cause in the public eye. Someone can scream at me that it doesn't, but it clearly does as it leads to a glut of information that people don't have the time to sort through if they're not invested in this issue.
I'm a member of the "LGBT" banner by virtue of being bisexual and I frankly don't get a lot of this shit, why it needs to be spread in the manner it is.
I mean... Why not include them?
I dont think the slippery slope argument works when it comes to emojis or representation.
Theres already far too many emojis, and if they add more to represent different gender and sexual orientations then thats a good thing
Before 😂 became a meme it was definitely something only ghetto twitter used.
Otherwise, yeah, the idea of emojis are fine. There's a reason every major chat client since AIM has had emoticons in some form.
Why not include what? All those categories?
At some point you cross over from celebrating identity into a political statement
I somewhat agree since a lot of those flags on the Wikipedia page are tiny subsets of a more major group but at the very least, the differentiation between LGB and T does make sense overall. They're completely different and only vaguely related concepts that just ended up being lumped together simply because when the LGBT movement started picking up steam, transgender people and LBG people were both considered social outcasts so they ended up grouping together out of necessity.
Lol, the political statement of celebrating identity you might say
Today, Identity and politics are HEAVILY intertwined
Okay, so? Inclusivity isn't a bad stance to take dude
this. the only ppl who are going to be mad if a trans flag gets added are transphobes anyway
progress in the name of representation is always gonna ruffle a few feathers
it is a political statement.
trans people are actively discriminated against, even by some in the LGB (T) community by people you will see labeled "TERFS"
emojis hardly take up any fucking space and if we can have one for every hour-hand-clock-position then there's nothing wrong with adding a trans-specific flag
inclusiveness is good. it doesn't take away from anything else.
OK here's a tip for y'all.
If you ever have the urge to make a statement like "wow what an important issue" or "tackling the real issues we face" (just as an example),
then you missed the joke
The news here for me is that not only is there an Aerial Tramway emoji but it was important enough to be included in the Emoji 1.0 set, the very first release?
wow I don't think lobsters would like to be associated with them
Emoji are derived from a Japanese mobile phone feature, the initial version of the Emoji spec as a result is fucking crammed with weird things that only Japanese users will really have a use for, and just other weird obscure shit because "holy shit we've got unicode code blocks for days might as well add it all".
Wow, not understanding basic biology about lobsters, and being a transphobe at the same time. Amazing
It's almost like transphobia requires complete scientific illiteracy.
And being a cunt
Lobsters are gynandromorphs, which means they have male and female cells.
lobsters are more trans than people think
