Maybe people can finaly stop idolizing gaben and valve and finaly demand a proper game or proper manpower for their projects
I read it more that if stuff is free it devalues not only items, but the player's time and enjoyment through grinding. TF2's only grind is getting random drops with weapons which you can just get all of them through
scrap.tf, and Dota 2's grind is only from the battle pass stuff.
To fuel their "infinite money printer in the basement" (I'm not gonna let that reveal go).
I'll try it out, when they make it free. Game and cards, that is.
If they never do that, I don't care, I'm missing absolutely nothing.
As I said earlier, it's really ironic that this game is using DotA 2 for its theme. DotA 2 would not have succeeded if all of the characters had to be unlocked via grinding or monetary means.
You're confusing the sale pack with the Valve Friends and Family Complimentary license.
And still sadly somehow received unwanted sequel back in 2011.
Wait, there's not going to be a way to grind for card packs, or did they just not mention it? I hope I'm missing something because this sounds loke a really raw deal compared to hearthstone
I'm not too concerned about the $20. Granted what you get seems a bit iffy.
In the end people will spend money either way. Playing games like Hearthstone completely free can be a huge pain.
I'm still gonna wait for the final release to see whats in it and how bad it really is to get cards and whatnot.
Gotta wonder if Valve ever reads any of what people write/talk about their games. Do they know a lot of long time users are unhappy with this game coming out? Do they even care that their long time fan base feels cheated and lest in the dust? I guess they don't care because Dota 2 fans seem to eat up anything with the branding regardless of how shitty this model is compared to hearthstone.
If that was the case, then why the fuck aren't there free card drops in Artifact? I'm fairly certain this is all bullshit, and the real justification is that, as people have pointed out, they know the Dota 2 fanboys and card game fanatics will eat this garbage up anyway. This game wasn't made for us, or even most gamers: it is a specifically targeted effort to milk a niche audience for all they're worth. And I guarantee you if it succeeds, all valve games going forward that aren't VR tech demos are going to be modeled after this.
It's time to face the facts, people: Valve is fucking dead. They are consumed by greed and will never stop their quest for more money. And there is literally nothing we can do to change their mind, as long as they own PC gaming's ultimate money printing press in the Steam storefront. Even if Artifact fails, they have literally no incentive to go back to the way they used to make games. They will just lie dormant for the next few years until someone comes up with the next brilliant idea for a money siphoning machine packaged as a game, and then the cycle will begin anew. And with what has been rumored, this is not just out of laziness - this is a fucking corporate mandate. If you aren't focusing all your efforts on making dough, if you are actually interested in making a actual game rather than a system of revenue generation, you are not welcome at modern day Valve, and the "hidden bosses" will do everything in their power to get rid of you if you somehow managed to sneak into their company.
All I can say is fucking disgraceful.
The entire games industry needs a kick in the fucking balls right now, all everyone cares about is milking their customer.
Fuck the product, get the wonga, that's all that matters mates.
I once bought a valve game just so I could get the models and materials in Gmod.
That's all it would be for me. But 20$ is steep for some dragon baby models when they'll be ported regardless.
There is one way, law. State sales tax will now be enforced in Steam's biggest non-China market, and the if rest of the EU, Canada and such legislate against lootboxes, Valve might change their tune.
Valve was talking about microtrasactions in 2004, and Steam used HL2 to get into people's homes. They might be pushing VR so they can dominate it like Steam, but they have Oculus to deal with.

Here for people to read this easier. Plus look how they email Tyler in beginning.
Look if they have a mechanic like hearthstone that lets you disenchant old removed cards to craft new ones it shouldn't be a problem, i'd only take issue with it if the cards straight up poof at the end of a season and are now worthless. If I wanted that experience I would just go and play actual MTG, hell the online MTG games offer you a better deal than this.
"Garfield and friends"
I used to watch that every morning before school. Now I'm watching Valve make a game I have no interest in. How times have changed!
Still going to make millions because valve made it woo
Fuck you
Are you okay @Blochu
Show us on the card where gaben touched you
I'm not too fond on the idea of a 20$ price tag on top of card packs being purchased in the actual game. Perhaps there is a method of earning them through traditional game-play.
I'm willing to bet the majority of potential buyers will wait until a month or two post release to decide to take the plunge. Especially since a lot of the design choices overall seem fairly questionable in its current state.
Doing this in a world with Hearthstone and that MTG:Arena basically out is just suicidal
For anyone other than Valve, yes. DOTA players will eat this up though, and you can bet your ass there'll be a full banner ad on the top of steam for at least a couple of days when it comes out.
I hope you are wrong, reddit is not a good way to gauge stuff like that.
Sadly, I think it is a very good indication of how casual gamers will take it. They'll see the big banner ad, see a lot of buzz on Reddit, and buy in to it since it's 'only' $20. It's only after they've bought in that they'll discover the additional charges, and that's when the sunk cost fallacy kicks in.
I hate it, but it's the most likely thing to happen. It's happened before, after all.
Unless they have a seperate mobile version, I have no idea how they expect to have success on mobile. Also I checked r/dota2 and there's complaining about "escalating odds" in the latest Compendium, maybe
they're getting tired of Valve as well.
as someone with little experience with trading card games, i don't entirely see why people are making a big fuss about this being a paid game. with physical card games you pay to start playing and you pay to get more cards, and i don't really see what's different about this. maybe Hearthstone is free at first, sure, but it seems like you eventually have to pay up in that game, too, if you want more cards.
If I were looking for a card game, would I go with the one that costs 20 dollars or the one that's free?
Tough call.
The rest of the industry should be receiving flak too.
It's all fucking garbage.
